Washing up - is DH filthy or am I overreacting?

I have name changed for this. Dh and I have a disagreement about washing up water. He feels that you fill the sink, start with cleanest stuff eg glasses work your way through to the dirty stuff and no need to change the water unless the bubbles disappear, even if the water looks dirty.

I fill the sink, wash, rinse under running water, and if the water gets cloudy I change it.

I just caught him washing a cereal bowl in this:

I think it's disgusting. He thinks it is fine 'as it was the last thing to be washed'. We have agreed to abide by the MN poll for future washing up.

So, YABU DH is sensible and timesaving, of course the last few things will be washed in cloudy water.

YANBU DH is filthy and clean water and rinsing are the way to go.

You know SEVERAL people who died from bacteria left on plates!!!

Determined by post-mortems?
Microbiology reports stated that the lethal bacteria were “caught” from plates?

Seems v improbable.

They probably misspelled Pilates!

FlipFlop1987 · 26/04/2024 22:43

Never realised so many people washed pots under running water. I’d be interested to know how much water that uses

Aquarius1234 · 26/04/2024 22:50

I think its disgusting that people don't mind washing up a variety of drinks and food plates/ cutlery etc in the same soapy water. And never rinse.
Ewwwww

Aquarius1234 · 26/04/2024 22:52

Yes I absolutely waste water running the hot tap, but I could never eat or drink again if I lived with people that ate and drank stuff I didn't like and didn't rinse loads.
I mean I would taste it on the dishes/ glasses.
Ewwww

Aquarius1234 · 26/04/2024 22:53

More to the point I see plates and glasses not washed properly when people either don't rinse or use the sponge long enough!
You have to keep going over and over.
I don't have a dishwasher and washing up takes me a long time, but I would be even more frustrated if I picked up things from the dish rack the day after and knew or could see they were not extra clean !!

You absolutely wouldn’t taste it, don’t be daft. It’s not like homeopathy. Or maybe it is. Neither are real.

Mothership4two · 27/04/2024 02:23

That's what soap is for @Aquarius1234

Tartantotty · 27/04/2024 19:08

Whatever water I wash up in I always rinse everything in cold water.

I live alone but for science I washed up under a running tap the other day
Used a sink full of of water and no more as I run the tap v slowly
My water bill is about £25pm including regular baths and my hair washing takes ages

Stacey1316 · 27/04/2024 21:53

That’s so gross. I’m with you. Water being milky white is nasty, and everything needs to be rinsed. 🤢 I would say your husband can be on dishwasher duty, and you can do any of the washing up.

YANBU

crumblingschools · 28/04/2024 01:16

@pelotonaddiction was that just for one person’s worth of washing up? Assume you would use more than a sink full if washing up for a family of four

Yes probably a bit extra as I had batch cooked
I do switch the tap off as I'm scrubbing stuff though and then back on to rinse

My water bill says I use less than most single person households (it has a thing on it telling you average usage per person and your own usage)

I wash dishes under a running tap. Your husband isn’t cleaning dishes he’s just transferring germs from one dish to another.

Has anyone itt ever contracted a bacterial infection or disease by not rinsing the dishes? #teamDH

Aquarius1234 · 28/04/2024 08:31

I worked in cafe/ restaurants for years and if you didn't power rinse everything before and after, it would result in losing your job.
Imagine picking clean stuff up and seeing little tiny bits of food or lip marks still on it!
I reckon half the people on here don't care if their stuff is only 80% washed properly.

Jadedone · 28/04/2024 09:50

I wash mine in very hot water washing up liquid is antibacterial I rinse under cold tap .I don't have a dish washer as there's only 2 of us in the house
I do change water if im washing greasey roasting trays etc.
As long as its rinsed well it should be ok .

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 28/04/2024 09:51

That actually sounds a lot, we are 2 adults, 2 kids under 4 so baths every other day, a dog, dishwasher and a hot tub. Have a 5 bedroom house. Our DD is £27

pelotonaddiction · 28/04/2024 18:25

@FlipFlop1987 different companies maybe? I'm in the NW

It says on my bill
Average single person usage 149 litres
Your daily average 129 litres

It quoted a 4 person household as using 450 litres on average

So my bill isn't any more than an average 1 person household Confused

I think the company will have an impact. We are NE but our (grim) water is Anglian. Don’t ask!

Our average last year for 3 of us was about 140 by that image, it’s gone up in the last 8 months as we have a new baby. I think he uses the majority! Now about 230 for all four of us but only pay £27. You may have a high standing charge possibly

Get dishes wet.
Soap each item indivdually.
Wash/rinse under a running tap.

YABU. That looks fine and the bowl is clean. The test is whether things are clean when they dry. Your way wastes water and energy.

They won't be clean if they dry with dirt on them, will they, even if it's not immediately visible? I don 't want soap suds drying onto the dishes, either.
