Washing up - is DH filthy or am I overreacting?

I have name changed for this. Dh and I have a disagreement about washing up water. He feels that you fill the sink, start with cleanest stuff eg glasses work your way through to the dirty stuff and no need to change the water unless the bubbles disappear, even if the water looks dirty.

I fill the sink, wash, rinse under running water, and if the water gets cloudy I change it.

I just caught him washing a cereal bowl in this:

I think it's disgusting. He thinks it is fine 'as it was the last thing to be washed'. We have agreed to abide by the MN poll for future washing up.

So, YABU DH is sensible and timesaving, of course the last few things will be washed in cloudy water.

YANBU DH is filthy and clean water and rinsing are the way to go.

… and lands in the loo face down…🤣👍

😆
Which of course no-one will have flushed, because he’s the boss and they’re not allowed to 😂

crumblingschools · 22/04/2024 13:15

@Ilovecleaning some of the obsessive washers on here do actually think you can get very ill if you don’t rinse the plate at least 3 times

Tamrastarr · 22/04/2024 13:58

I read something a while ago about letting people do things their way, as long as they are doing them and helping out. I do tend to agree. I used to be chipping in checking what they were doing and if it was to my standard. But if you're not happy you might as well do it yourself, and not moan when no one helps.

After the dishwasher? I can’t even…

The dishwasher part was in parentheses.. I rinse after handwashing (and before using the dishwasher).

Ahh ok. Missed that. Fair enough.
Still seems a waste of water though - especially before the dishwasher. Manufacturers even say that it’s not necessary. Scraping big lumps off, yes. Washing everything off, no.

No need to rinse whatsoever before put in dishwasher

Wexone · 22/04/2024 16:26

yes my nana actually gave me this advice years ago when moved in with my now husband ( something my own mother never took on and now does everything herself)
I also apply it to work sometimes too
Not everyone does it your way and your way is not perfect either

meant to quote this in my post above

Oh LORD, I am a water weirdo but at least I don't make everyone else join in. My husband will sometimes offer me the dish water when he's washed up for the plants in summer now though because he's a sweet man who knows I care about it 😆

Mothership4two · 23/04/2024 12:46

When I hand wash I pretty much follow your DH's routine, but will replace greasy water. I would wash a leftover bowl in the end water but then would give it a rinse. But usually it all goes in the dishwasher anyway.

Mothership4two · 23/04/2024 12:55

@Wexone

No need to rinse whatsoever before put in dishwasher

Agree and preferable as rinsing might actually make your dishwasher less efficient and the items dirtier than if you'd just left them.

I've read others suggesting this but don't understand it at all. Why would this be possible? I always rinse everything as I think it's a bit gross to chuck particles of food in to the dishwasher. My stuff always comes out very clean.

crumblingschools · 23/04/2024 14:05

@flippingflips the argument is that the enzymes in detergents need something to latch on to. Best to get rid of chunks of food, so scrape things into food bin but not actually rinse the plate before putting into dishwasher

Mothership4two · 23/04/2024 14:34

If you Google it @flippingflips you will find a zillion 'experts' (including dishwasher and detergent manufacturers) agreeing about this.

I know it sounds counter-intuitive!

Basically what @crumblingschools said. And also modern dishwashers are smart and, if you rinse first, you may trick the sensors into 'thinking' that your things are actually cleaner than they are and the dishwasher will adjust its settings and not be as efficient as it should be and things may come out not fully clean.

Oh. I've just googled and found this which means I need to find out if my dishwasher tablets have amlayse and protease enzymes in them. I bought very cheap ones last time and have decanted so can't check this time.

flippingflips · 23/04/2024 14:52

OMgoodness. I often buy SMOL. Just checked their ingredients

This is how my parents washed up, and how I did, until we got a dishwasher, and no-one ever got sick as a result of eating off the plates we cleaned this way.

Thank you, Mothership4two 😊. Yes, I am a bit silly sometimes. It’s just that a series of serious posts on mundane things make me want to break out with daft responses sometimes ( I don’t do it with actual serious subjects though!)

SallyWD · 23/04/2024 15:51

I've started washing things how my MIL does. Basically, I don't fill the sink with water. I wash an item with a soapy sponge then rinse it well under a running tap. I think this is the most hygebic way because the item never gets put in to dirty water. Even with your method, the water will be dirty after you've washed a couple of things.

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 23/04/2024 15:55

So long as there's no visible residue I cannot bring myself to care.

For those of you that do, may I suggest an autoclave?

Oops, sorry. Wrong post. But I have known several people who have died from bacteria left on plates.

You know SEVERAL people who died from bacteria left on plates!!!

Determined by post-mortems?
Microbiology reports stated that the lethal bacteria were “caught” from plates?

Seems v improbable.
