Would you find this a little snobby in someone?

If someone looked down their nose at seaside towns like Blackpool or similar, and would only stay in high-end hotels, nothing like a Premier Inn. I know it's all budget-related, though I've had perfectly good experiences with premier inns and cannot afford luxury hotels.

I don't think it's snobby to prefer quality hotels, or to dislike places like Blackpool that have a trashy reputation.
I wouldn't choose to stay in either, but wouldn't look down on anyone that does. Everyone likes different things and that's okay.

Just out of interest, have you ever been to either? I haven’t and have an image of them being a shithole but suddenly thought perhaps Blackpool is actually fabulous and everyone who goes there tells the rest of us it’s shit to keep it for themselves… 🤔

Yes I have. I live about 40 minutes from Rhyl but never go there anymore as its a dump. When my kids were younger they loved Blackpool, we use to go a couple of times during the school holidays then again to see the lights. Not anymore though, it's so run down and looks really rough.

noway2 · 07/04/2024 22:06

Blackpool is okay for a day trip once in a while. I would never go there on a holiday; it is a bit depressing around the edges. I used to go on family holidays to Rhyl as a kid; it's a dump now. Prestatyn is still quite nice though.

Saschka · 07/04/2024 22:09

Went to Blackpool as a child and it was fine. Went back a couple of years ago and it was really run down - lots of sketchy junkies and alcoholics wandering around, drunk people fighting in the streets in the evenings, just felt really rough. We always go to UK seaside resorts on holiday, but I wouldn’t go back to Blackpool. Southend, Margate, Eastbourne, Hastings, Scarborough, Whitby, Poole all much nicer, even before you start on the Southwold/Whitstable/St Ives posh places.

Premier Inns are great for an overnight stay, I wouldn’t book into one for a week’s holiday, but if you just want somewhere to sleep for the night they are a cheap and reliable option.

Listentogold · 07/04/2024 22:17

There is more to Blackpool than what is written by the press or snobby people.
We go every year for a 3 night stay.
Hotel is fantastic with great food and entertainment. Secret is NOT to book a cheap bed and breakfast. The one we stay at is just at the rear of the resort.
Go off the beaten track Stanley Park is lovely bowling greens, golf course, boating lake and plenty of open spaces.
Not my cup of tea but there is a zoo.
Restaurants again look at the rear of the resort.
Walk along the promenade on the opposite side to the arcades. Flat areas for pushing a wheelchair or pram.
Or walk along the beach.
Get a bus to St Anne's.
The theatres have some good shows.
Admittedly we don't go during the summer months.

All resorts have good and bad points.

Newtonianmechanics · 07/04/2024 22:27

I prefer Prem inns to Travelodges or the basic IBIS.

Ihearyousingingdownthewire · 07/04/2024 23:15

I’m quite (very) ‘particular’ about my travel arrangements, but actually, Premier Inn beds are fairly good. It’s not actually that cheap though.

AnxiousRabbit · 07/04/2024 23:29

Having an opinion on somewhere like Blackpool is not being a snob.
Parts are very nice to live, but most would agree its the lower tackier end of the British holiday resort tiers. So saying so is not snobbery.

Even when I was a kid 40 years ago not many people I knew went there on holiday...a day trip maybe a couple of nights....but either for the specific attractions or to celebrate the tackiness more than anything else.

Has he actually said he would never stay in a Premier Inn? Again it's not snobbery to recognise that there are tiers or want the best you can afford . It's snobbish to think that makes you better than other people.

I used to enjoy walking along the beach, going to the pleasure beach and so on as a child. I understand the nightlife might be dire, and I think there's a difference between living there and going for the day.

OP, I used to enjoy doing this in Blackpool too. And my DM is practically Hyacinth Bucket and spent most of her summers there. Ignore your friend. However, by all accounts I think Blackpool is perhaps not as nice now as it was when we were children for various reasons.

walkerscrispsarethenuts · 08/04/2024 00:07

Definitely a big no to Blackpool.

I'd stop in a Premier Inn if I literally just need to get my head down for one night (at an airport or after a party). I wouldn't stop in one for a holiday though!

Nevermind31 · 08/04/2024 00:12

No to Blackpool. One or two nights in a Premier Inn, sure, you know what you get. As holiday accommodation? No thank you.
but each to their own.

Bazinga007 · 08/04/2024 00:17

Nothing wrong with a Premier Inn, we have stayed in many and all have been reasonably priced and cleaned.

But having experieanced Blackpool, I would rather go to Mordor than go again.

theduchessofspork · 08/04/2024 00:20

Blackpool is a very strong flavour a lot of people wouldn’t like.

A prem inn is the opposite - a bland but sometimes handy place to stay that’s clean with decent beds and showers. It’s not a destination in itself nor is it meant to be.

theduchessofspork · 08/04/2024 00:23

I am in a £25 travelodge tonight (£25!!) and the bed is goodish, the shower looks goodish. The dinner in subway though is not something I have done in 25 years not will I be for another 25.

Yes to premier inn, no way to Blackpool!

It's common for bus companies round my way to run trips to Blackpool for the lights, in October.

I begged Dad to let us go one year. He absolutely refused: he'd been there once in the '50s and thought it a terrible place. Snobbery had nothing to do with it: Dad was a coalminer.

Quaversss · 08/04/2024 08:51

Premier inn if needs must but not for a holiday. Work or if need to stay at a certain location for a night then fine as they do seem to be in most places. They are clean and tidy but basic. Holidays need to be more luxurious than my own house or it's not a holiday imo!

Blackpool - never been, and don't really want to!

SallyWD · 08/04/2024 09:21

No I wouldn't see it as snobbish to be honest.

Arraminta · 08/04/2024 14:33

Premier Inn are perfectly adequate if you just need somewhere to sleep for the night. You know you will get a comfortable bed, it will be clean and the shower is decent, plus they're usually well located with good parking. Wouldn't ever book in to one for several days or a week though, they're just not suitable for that length of stay. Blackpool is a hard no from me, you couldn't pay me enough to go there.

I’m so poor and I really would not want to do either of those things.

Don't know what happened there with multiple posts.

CoffeeCantata · 08/04/2024 14:39

Yes to Premier Inns, a massive no to Blackpool. I used to be taken there as a child (by friends) and my mum wasn't keen then, but it's changed enormously in the last 20 years due to the housing of so many addicts and people with complex problems by the council in properties which once would have accommodated holiday-makers (who now go abroad or elsewhere).

Ive spent plenty of time there. Absolutely loads. It is a shit hole. If you think otherwise you need to see more of the country.

that is not to say there are not nicer areas on the outskirts. We used to be at the zoo almost weekly.

Edited

I've lived in loads of places and seen plenty of the country, thanks.

I'll concede that the town centre, particularly towards the south end, seems to be struggling since I lived in the area, and that saddens me. But as you yourself mentioned, there are nicer areas on the outskirts.

I do think it would be nice if before people write off whole towns as 'a shithole' they took a moment to think about the problems 'shithole' places are typically facing, parts of Blackpool are really struggling with deprivation at the moment and the majority of its inhabitants are not responsible for the town's seedier elements such as the drug problem.

Have to say, too, I am curious as to how come you've spent 'absolutely loads' of time in a place you consider a shithole? scratches head in puzzlement

PracticallyPerfectedIt · 08/04/2024 19:46

We're going to Blackpool this summer and I was really looking forward to it... Never been before.

Years ago I asked on here where was a 'nice' place to stay near Blackpool and got completely torn to shreds for being a vile snob 😂
