If someone looked down their nose at seaside towns like Blackpool or similar, and would only stay in high-end hotels, nothing like a Premier Inn. I know it's all budget-related, though I've had perfectly good experiences with premier inns and cannot afford luxury hotels.

It doesn't matter what the object is, anyone who looks down on something is at least a little mean. I'm not saying I don't do this, but it's not a nice attribute, it doesn't help humanity along or anything, it's just one upmanship.

I think it depends what you mean by ‘snobbery’. Someone saying that somewhere is a ‘vile, horrible place’ isn’t necessarily being a snob. They just may have disliked it and that’s their opinion. Someone saying that somewhere is a ‘vile, horrible place full of lower class people’ would be snobbery.

“Vile, horrible place” is often code for “full of working class people”, in my experience. Middle class people know it is uncouth to express their loathing of people, so they will do it about places instead, thereby passing it off as a mere “preference”. The clue is in the strength of the opinion. Certain places themselves act as avatars for working class people - see Blackpool, Benidorm, Wetherspoons.

I’ve never been to Blackpool, but we went to Skegness a lot of a kid. Wild horses wouldn’t drag my DH to Skegness on holiday as an adult, and now we have money for ‘better’ holidays I'm not massively keen on going back myself to be honest. I don’t think that makes us snobs, just that your tastes and budgets evolve as you get older. I’ve stayed in the odd Premier Inn when it was convenient, but we usually choose ‘nicer’ hotels, and for us it’s part of the holiday experience.

We love blackpool!! It’s cheap and tacky yes, but loads to for the kids and also a lovely seafood restaurant. It’s what you make of it!

Which seafood restaurant is that? 😋

I don't like Premier Inns and wouldn't ever ever go to Blackpool. If that makes me a snob, so be it!

Agree. Wouldn’t go near either. Sozza

Hoppinggreen · 07/04/2024 16:28

Its not snobby. I have been to Blackpool and I dont like it.
I know what I want from a weekend break and Blackpool doesnt provide it, it provides things I really dont want.
No issue with a Premier inn though but I do prefer non chains - even if its 4 star

Interesting to hear. That’s not been my experience.

Stickysusan · 07/04/2024 16:34

Blackpool is a total dump. Premier inns are functional and adequate but I’d prefer somewhere else it it were available.

PonyPatter44 · 07/04/2024 16:35

Is it Premier Inn that does unlimited sausages at breakfast? I'm always up for unlimited sausage!

DP and I have been saying that we quite fancy a trip to Blackpool just to see it, and see if it is as bad as people say.

Councils don't release prisoners though

Nope but they often house them

Or for some reason hostels seem to get built there a lot. Possibly as there aren't many schools due to ageing population

Bournetilly · 07/04/2024 16:46

I think there’s nothing wrong with staying at a premier inn if you want a cheap room, you know what you are getting and what to expect.

I live near ish to Blackpool (40 mins away), it’s a horrible, dirty place. I can understand why people with children might want to visit for the day as there is so much for children to do but personally would never go on holiday there (even if I didn’t live close by). I wouldn’t say this to someone who did go there though.

BeaRF75 · 07/04/2024 16:52

Calling someone "snobby" actually says a huge amount about inverted snobbery, tbh.
It's fine for people to have all sorts of different tastes and likes - we're all entitled to our own opinion.

margotsdevil · 07/04/2024 16:55

I have many happy memories of Blackpool as a child - but that's more than 30 years ago. I think the Blackpool of today is perhaps less appealing and it's not somewhere I'd choose to spend a holiday. Nothing wrong with a Premier Inn though!

THisbackwithavengeance · 07/04/2024 16:55

Premier Inns are generally clean, tidy, modern no-frills hotels. They do a good breakfast and the price is always right. I don't see the issue. I stay in them quite often for work.

Took my DD and her pal to Blackpool last year to see the lights and go to pleasure beach. It was what it was. They had a good time on the rollercoasters. The lights were pretty.

But I'm common as muck.

Zola1 · 07/04/2024 16:56

I'd never stay over at Blackpool, we do go though for the fair and the waterpark.
I fucking hate the Premier Inn TBH, stayed in one a few months ago to break up a journey and it was horrible like a cell

keffie12 · 07/04/2024 17:00

We used to take the children to Blackpool for days out 30 years ago. I had a short break there in my 20s.

I wouldn't be seen dead there now. Total shi*hole

There is nothing wrong with Premier Inn. Defo not in Blackpool, though.

So be it if that makes me a snob. I wouldn't have a holiday in this country anyway

Upallnight2 · 07/04/2024 17:03

We stayed in the Premier Inn in Blackpool when DS was about 18months. Had a blast down by the pier and a day at nickelodeon land! It is obviously run down though.. the premier Inn was fine apart from it was a heatwave and they had no air con 😂 we just lay on the bed naked with the fan on.. if we moved to go to the loo or anything we broke out into a sweat lol

Upallnight2 · 07/04/2024 17:07

Just to add we didn't see it after dark 🤣 definitely wouldn't want to go for the nightlife haha

2003unbearable · 07/04/2024 17:09

I love a visit to Blackpool, had my hen do there. We stayed down the road at a nice hotel in Lytham though and the weather was amazing which makes everything better. I certainly wouldn’t stay in Blackpool overnight.

OtterlyOverit · 07/04/2024 17:10

OP...Blackpool...just no.

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 07/04/2024 17:11

It’s ok to make other choices if Blackpool isn’t your thing, it’s ok to choose somewhere more upmarket / expensive if your budget allows

But never ok to look down your nose at different choices or lower budgets.

Peclet · 07/04/2024 17:14

Never been to Blackpool but hate fairgrounds and rides so I know I wouldn’t like it.

Premier Inns are great! Good value for what they are.

Malarandras · 07/04/2024 17:17

People are allowed to like what they like. You wouldn’t catch me in Blackpool for all the money in the world. Premier Inn? If I just need somewhere to stay for a night absolutely. If I’m away on a holiday or not just doing a stopover then no definitely not. It’s my money I will spend it how I want to.

Eh? I'm sure people will be happy to tell you what they dislike about a place if you ask further.
Blackpool is quite dirty and has a lot of drugs, people getting very drunk and fighting in the streets etc. As @DeedlessIndeed said a lot of places boarded up with graffiti all over.

I doubt that anybody regardless of class would find that nice? If you have little choice thanks to a very low budget, it might be bearable as opposed to no holiday at all. But class isn't just about money.

Anyotherdude · 07/04/2024 17:21

I don’t mind Premier Inn, but I’ve never been to Blackpool, so I can’t say. Keep an open mind is my motto (the SCD crowd LOVE Blackpool!)
