Would you find this a little snobby in someone?

If someone looked down their nose at seaside towns like Blackpool or similar, and would only stay in high-end hotels, nothing like a Premier Inn. I know it's all budget-related, though I've had perfectly good experiences with premier inns and cannot afford luxury hotels.

There's nothing wrong with people not wanting to stay in certain places, but they shouldn't judge others for staying there. I stay in a lot of Premier Inns, but then on occasion I like to treat myself to a really nice hotel. If I could afford to, I would stay in better places all the time. I don't think there's anything wrong with liking somewhere with a nicer view, bigger bath, room service, etc.

OddityOddityOdd · 07/04/2024 16:03

It's not snobby not to like something, that is just personal taste. It is snobby to belittle or laugh at other people's choices and make them feel ashamed for choosing them, that is vile behaviour.

Packingcubesqueen · 07/04/2024 16:03

Not wanting to stay in Blackpool or a premier inn isn’t snobby in its-self but going around telling people is weird. You don’t need to list places you don’t want to visit.

Mama1209 · 07/04/2024 16:05

We love blackpool!! It’s cheap and tacky yes, but loads to for the kids and also a lovely seafood restaurant. It’s what you make of it!

KoolKookaburra · 07/04/2024 15:56

Councils often house released prisoners in these areas as its cheap

Councils don't release prisoners though

We like Blackpool for a day trip for the pleasure beach, water park, arcades etc but I wouldn't want to be there at night as it has a reputation for being rough and full or stag and hen parties.

I wouldn't judge anyone for having a holiday there though. There is plenty for kids to do in the area and a nice beach at St Annes down the road

Gingerlygreen · 07/04/2024 16:06

I like Blackpool, it's stuck in the 1930s but I like the nostalgia.

I wouldn't go for my main two week holiday but we've enjoyed a few long weekend trips with the kids to see the lights and go to the Tower and Pleasure Beach.

Rhyl not so much, that doesn't have any redeeming features.

HelloMiss · 07/04/2024 16:07

Have you all been to Blackpool recently? It's changed massively

Half of it is now closed down

Jf20 · 07/04/2024 16:08

Blackpool eons ago was bearable, it’s really very bad now. Anyone who doesn’t look down on it is getting it wrong.

and given a choice between high end or premier inn, every single person would choose high end if they could afford it.

This. It has changed massively.

Beezknees · 07/04/2024 16:09

Well, it would depend on how it was worded for me.

If someone didn't want to go on holiday to Blackpool I wouldn't care, it's personal preference.

If they started slagging off people who go there and using words like "chav" or "rough" then yes I would think they were a horrible snob.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 07/04/2024 16:10

Premier Inn is fine. I wouldn't chose to stay in Blackpool. I don't think that's snobby.

Yeah, this.

ParrotPirouette · 07/04/2024 16:11

I used to go to see the illuminations every year as a child, happy memories, I would like to go back.
I love a premier inn too, also have a soft spot for the humble travelodge. I’m a wheelchair user and they are the most reliably accessible hotels in my experience, very comfortable and I greatly appreciate them.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 07/04/2024 16:12

He's rude, that's for sure.

i haven't been to Blackpool for over 40 years. I quite fancy going this year.

what are the lights like these days?

with its reputation for bed bugs I'll be staying further out & will book somewhere nice & hopefully without bb's.

i don't mind premier in for a functional overnight, but wouldn't book it for a weekend away/holiday ( but fine if you do because it makes a family holiday affordable)

Shestolemyboyfriend · 07/04/2024 16:13

I would think someone was a snob. I holidayed similarly as a child.. I considered myself lucky to have a holiday each summer. I am a frequented of Rhyl, Blacker and Morecambe.

Is he rude? She asked him if he’d been there. Not from what she’s said told him it’s her holiday location of choice.

OutOfTheHouse · 07/04/2024 16:15

But you were talking about going there as a child.
Firstly you had no choice in that. Secondly, as a child so many things seem fun that as an adult you don’t like. Finally, this was years ago that you are talking about, not last week.

He might well be of the opinion that it’s a shit hole now, it doesn’t mean there was an anything wrong with enjoying it as a kid.

Elephantswillnever · 07/04/2024 16:16

Not a fan of Blackpool, love a premier inn. So standardised that you know what you are getting. With high end hotels I sometimes feel like you are not getting what you pay for. Sometimes they aren’t that clean, the toiletries are a bit shit, the bath is really shallow, breakfast is dried out. All of these are minor niggles but if I’m paying £££s I want my experience to be top notch. Happy to pay ££ and stay in a premier inn though.

Horsesontheloose · 07/04/2024 16:17

Well, we had a fab four night stay in Blackpool when the kids were under ten. It had everything that kids like - fairground rides, circus, trams beach, those 2p games on the pier. I think don't knock it til you've tried it. We have had posh hols and clearly, according to this thread, very common hols, and the best ones are where everything is close together and the kids are entertained.

LouLaBear23 · 07/04/2024 16:17

I think it depends what you mean by ‘snobbery’. Someone saying that somewhere is a ‘vile, horrible place’ isn’t necessarily being a snob. They just may have disliked it and that’s their opinion. Someone saying that somewhere is a ‘vile, horrible place full of lower class people’ would be snobbery.

Newtonianmechanics · 07/04/2024 16:19

Yes it's snobbery. I like Blackpool. We all love rollercoasters in my family. The pleasure beach is fun. Yes it maybe passed its hey day in places. It's worth a visit if you accept it for what it is.

I could have a god time in more ' classier ' places too.

It's just a different experience. From walking in Iceland, city breaks etc all different experiences but all fun. They are all worth a visit. Blackpool included.

80s illuminations were magical for 5 year old me.

DeedlessIndeed · 07/04/2024 16:19

Had to go to Blackpool for an event with DH maybe the year before last.

It was shocking. It was summer, so I assumed it would be at full capacity, however everywhere seemed shut down or boarded up. Everything looked tired, even in what I would have thought were the "prime" areas. It was a bit miserable if I'm honest.

CurlewKate · 07/04/2024 16:21

Looking down your nose at anybody or anything is rude.

Blueyandsocks · 07/04/2024 16:21

Have you been to Blackpool recently OP? I certainly wouldn’t judge someone as being a snob for saying they wouldn’t go there. I mean it really was the worst of the worst when we went for the day a couple of years ago to see the illuminations.
