Would you find this a little snobby in someone?

If someone looked down their nose at seaside towns like Blackpool or similar, and would only stay in high-end hotels, nothing like a Premier Inn. I know it's all budget-related, though I've had perfectly good experiences with premier inns and cannot afford luxury hotels.

Is Blackpool really that bad? Never been, but lots of English seaside towns are really run down now.

As for Premier inn, a millionaire stayed in one overnight for a family wedding as it was good value and clean.

I spent many day trips to Blackpool when I was little. Loved it. And kids still love it now because they don’t go there with any preconceived ideas. It’s just somewhere with lots of fun’s things to do. I can guarantee if you gave a five year old the choice of a holiday to a round the pool holiday to Greece or one to Blackpool, they would pick Blackpool. But it’s changed so much over the years. A dumping ground for the misfits, and a hen and stag party weekend venue. Lots who run the seafront shops are not friendly and try to shortchange you at every turn. But as adults that’s what we see; children not so much.

Thepeopleversuswork · 07/04/2024 18:32

Not wanting to go somewhere doesn't mean you're snobby about it. Wild horses couldn't drag me to stay at the Ritz (even if I had the budget). That's not snobbery, it just isn't my thing.

Blackpool doesn't appeal to me and I think life is too short to to spend money on things you don't want to do.

Vocalising that something is beneath you is snobby. Quietly declining to spend your own money on it is not.

Premier Inn I would be absolutely fine with but not one in Blackpool.

Queenfierce · 07/04/2024 18:39

Yes I use premier inn but would absolutely not stay in Blackpool at all

PeachBlossom1234 · 07/04/2024 18:40

I would say that I’m a snob (I can’t help it, it’s just how I am). I grew up near Blackpool and worked there in my early 20s, it was awful. I now live 250 miles away and my DD was taken to Blackpool a few years ago and loved it so we’re going this week just the two of us (help! lol) we’re staying in the travelodge which is fine, I can deal with that but I’ll be honest I’m not looking forward to it - my 8 year old on the other hand can’t wait so I’m happy to suck it up for a couple of nights for her happiness during the school holidays. I think holidays are what you make them and I have loads of happy memories of British seaside trips so I’m happy to embrace it…..and we won’t be going to the Pleasure Beach or Piers…..

LakieLady · 07/04/2024 18:43

I think Premier Inns are amazingly good value, and would happily stay in one again if I needed an overnight stop somewhere, but if I was going somewhere for an enjoyable trip away, I'd prefer something with more character.

I've been to Blackpool twice and, unless it was because I had tickets for Strictly, I wouldn't go there again. Bleak and shabby imo, but then so are many UK seaside resorts. I live very close to the Sussex coast, and I'm struggling to think of any coastal towns here that are really attractive places to visit.

tillytoodles1 · 07/04/2024 15:51

I'd quite happily stay in a Premier Inn, but wild horses couldn't drag me to a seaside resort like Blackpool or Rhyl.

Just out of interest, have you ever been to either? I haven’t and have an image of them being a shithole but suddenly thought perhaps Blackpool is actually fabulous and everyone who goes there tells the rest of us it’s shit to keep it for themselves… 🤔

edgeware · 07/04/2024 18:46

I am a snob when it comes to hotel as I like cleanliness and comfort - I wouldn’t just stay anywhere - but will always stay in a premier inn. Consistently good, so if someone was a snob about staying at a premier inn I would consider that silly.

butterpuffed · 07/04/2024 18:48

Never been to Blackpool , but after reading so many haters of the place by PPs on here , I want to go there and see it for myself !

Dibbydoos · 07/04/2024 18:57

So many snobs in this post....

Blackpool is fine. The people are fine and the Pleasure Beach is fabulous the fireworks competition is super as are the illuminations and good fish and chips everywhere!!! I haven't been for a few years cos I now live 3.5 hours away, but if I was nearer I'd go more often dedeffo.those complaining about it don't know how to have fun!

Ref Premier Inns and Travelodges, they're good standard hotels, I've stayed in worse for work , believe me.

Ref me - Id be classed as upper middle based on quals, job and income. I own timeshare at the best resort in Europe - 5* plus. Through this, we used to holiday 6-8 weeks pa when my DH was alive and the kids were younger. Now, we tend to cruise - this year it'll be 6 weeks cruising and multiple weekends away (already had 3 weekends away this year so probably another 3 or 4) in Prem Inns or Travelodges - seriously why pay through the nose if all toure doing is sleeping there? As long as its clean with no bed bugs all's good, surely🤔

The reality is people judge everything. Those of us who don't are def happier, believe me ;)

Favouritefruits · 07/04/2024 19:02

Yes it’s snobbery!

boredybored · 07/04/2024 19:02

I hate any type of snobby ness .. I don't know why people think they are better than something.. it's so weird !

MississippiAF · 07/04/2024 19:03

Not liking something doesn’t mean you think you are better than it? You just… don’t like it.

Each to their own. If you like it, go. If you don’t, don’t go.

It’s not for me.

Exactly this. I don’t think I’m ’better’ than Blackpool, it’s just not the sort of holiday I enjoy. And why would I spend my own hard earned money on a holiday I won’t enjoy, just so I’m not seen as a snob?

ThePoshUns · 07/04/2024 19:12

Wakeywake · 07/04/2024 15:51

Looking down on Blackpool is not snobbery, it's common sense.

This 100% I'm not a snob but I'd rather have pins stuck in my eyes than go to Blackpool.

ThePoshUns · 07/04/2024 19:13

I do stay in premier inns though although now I have a bit more money I'd rather a Hilton

Retrievemysanity · 07/04/2024 19:23

I’ve never understood the hate towards Blackpool. My in-laws live not too far away so when we go up to visit, we will usually stay either in Blackpool or the surrounding areas.

Rece had a Tussauds trip and to a local horse sanctuary (as recommended by a mumsnetter) which was truly lovely. Previous visits have been to the zoo, sea life, Stanley Park, circus in the tower and the arcades etc. Always something to do. Hen do’s and stag do’s yes, but you tend to avoid those in the day time and any other undesirable stuff is no different to a lot of UK cities.

Blueuggboots · 07/04/2024 19:25

Letthemusicplayy · 07/04/2024 15:59

I used to enjoy walking along the beach, going to the pleasure beach and so on as a child. I understand the nightlife might be dire, and I think there's a difference between living there and going for the day.

How old are you? I loved Blackpool when I was a child, 40+ years ago! Now? No. But it's very different.

Anonymous2025 · 07/04/2024 19:36

No issues with premier inn but Blackpool , Skegness etc all a big NOOOO from me . As it’s butlins and anything related . If it comes across snob so be it but the people that go there are nit the people I need around me when trying to relax

Crapuscular · 07/04/2024 19:36

I've no desire to go to Blackpool as a pleasure beach doesn't rock my boat.
I've never stayed in a Premier Inn. No reason really other than wherever we go , there doesn't seem to be one where we stay. I gather that their beds are heavenly so would love to get the chance.

I would, however, decline a Premier Inn at Blackpool. Sorry.

ExitSandyman · 07/04/2024 19:41

Blackpool is an absolute shit hole though, it’s not snobbery to point out the obvious

RoseGoldEagle · 07/04/2024 19:42

I’ve never really got the fuss about nice hotels. Have stayed in some eye wateringly expensive ones (that work have paid for), and after the initial ‘oooo this is nice!’ when you first walk in, which last 5 seconds- it’s then just a room, with a bed, maybe a desk which I don’t need, or a sofa, and a bathroom which honestly as long as it’s clean I couldn’t care less about. I’d never pay for an expensive hotel myself. Never been to Blackpool!

wintersgold · 07/04/2024 19:46

Could be a little snobby, but that's not a bad thing at all. It's entirely understandable to prefer some luxury

Samlewis96 · 07/04/2024 20:05

Jf20 · 07/04/2024 16:08

Blackpool eons ago was bearable, it’s really very bad now. Anyone who doesn’t look down on it is getting it wrong.

and given a choice between high end or premier inn, every single person would choose high end if they could afford it.

Why? A premier inn is clean and comfy to sleep in with a shower and tea making What would I gain from paying lots more for a " high end" hotel

Otherstories2002 · 07/04/2024 20:05

Having just come back to the worst place ever - Great Yarmouth - I would merrily be a snob!
