If someone looked down their nose at seaside towns like Blackpool or similar, and would only stay in high-end hotels, nothing like a Premier Inn. I know it's all budget-related, though I've had perfectly good experiences with premier inns and cannot afford luxury hotels.

I haven’t been to Blackpool so can’t comment on it. But, big but, I would never go out of my way to make somebody feel embarrassed about where they holiday or the hotels they stay in. I’m just happy for anyone to get their kicks where they can!

ZenNudist · 07/04/2024 17:31

I grew up there and yes it's ugly but there are good things about it For people in the North West. I wouldn't drive from London but if its your nearest sea side as it is mine there is fun to be had, particularly for families. As a place to visit family I consider myself lucky as there's lots of good things to do.

We enjoy:

Walking along the prom especially north or south shore where its quiet and untacky

My dc love the arcades

A trip to the Tower or the circus was great when mine were young

The zoo is great. Its not chester zoo But its good for the price

The sandcastle is loads of fun (although now Merlin entertainment have taken over operation I'm not sure)

The carpet of comedy is always fun to read

Parks at anchorsholme or Fleetwood or in Lytham are great (think Stanley Park has gone down but it used to be fab a few years ago when my dc were younger)

I hate Blackpool. One of my friends would like us to go there but I've been twice and that was enough. Premier Inn is fine though. I would be happy with that most places, just not Blackpool.

ZenNudist · 07/04/2024 17:34

The beach! I forgot to mention trips to the beach. Not sure nowadays as water quality is bad bad bad all over the UK. When mine were young they used to love paddling and throwing stones in pools and digging in the sand. There were EU rules on water quality that meant there was an improvement from the time I was a child. We used to go near Anchorsholme or Clevelys, get an ice cream, take a picnic.

It's often windy though!

ALongHardWinter · 07/04/2024 17:34

I love Premier Inns! You know exactly what you're going to get,no nasty little surprises. Regarding Blackpool,I went there 25 years ago. Once was enough for me.

I understand why people are saying that about these places. I felt a bit embarrassed when he said it as my parents took me to Blackpool often as a child, and sometimes Rhyl. We also went on 'higher end' holidays too though.

I too used to go to Blackpool, usually just for the day as it was only an hour away, however from what I read about it now it's become a horrible place.

MississippiAF · 07/04/2024 17:37

Premier Inn’s are fine; they’re (mostly) clean and reasonable and flexible.

Blackpool - no, just no.

5128gap · 07/04/2024 17:37

I think its fine not to like Blackpool or Premier Inn and to use your money on something you do like instead. I still think its fine if the something you like better is much more expensive. What's not fine is to make a big hoo hah about it around people who do enjoy Blackpool or Premier Inn because that's extremely rude.

HateMyNewJobSoMuch · 07/04/2024 17:38

As a child in the 80s I went to Blackpool for the long September weekends every year and I LOVED it. We did go abroad in the summer however Blackpool was an entire extended family affair.

I have fond memories of riding donkeys on the beach, going to the fun fair, visiting the tower, going to a huge soft play with my cousins (soft plays were not at all mainstream back then) and watching professionally put together family entertainment shows.

However, I was in the area a few years back and thought it would be fun to take my boys there. BIG mistake. It was awful. Dirty, run down, suspicious looking characters at every turn.... we couldn't leave quick enough.

Given my fond childhood memories I was genuinely disappointed.

cardibach · 07/04/2024 17:39

It’s not snobby to use your own money to do the things you enjoy.

I love Blackpool. It's tacky and a bit dated. But I don't care.

TellerTuesday · 07/04/2024 17:42

My DD (10) loves Blackpool, if she's happy, I'm happy. Also love Butlins which has the same rep on here, hated Centre Parcs. But then we're a bit of an oddity as technically we're middle class but we're also common as muck 🤣

BobbyBiscuits · 07/04/2024 17:44

Blackpool has a reputation for being cheap and cheerful. It's certainly not for everyone. Though most seaside towns are similar. Either that or really quiet and full of old people!
As for hotels, I guess if you're rich and you're used to luxury then premier inn doesn't cut it. Some people love spending loads on accomodation. I'd happily sleep in a tent in a random farmers field!

2gorgeousboys · 07/04/2024 17:44

I think judging anyone purely on where they holiday and hotels they stay in is snobby.

We go to Blackpool for the weekend three times a year because of DS1s hobby not through choice. We now stay in an Air BnB but have stayed in one of the Premier Inns there before. We don't actually see much of Blackpool but I wouldn't expect anyone to judge me because we have gone to Blackpool for the weekend. I'll be there next weekend actually!

Youdontevengohere · 07/04/2024 17:48

I don’t judge anyone for it. Just don’t want to go myself.

MumblesParty · 07/04/2024 17:59

I took my kids to Blackpool for a weekend when they were younger, to see the illuminations. We stayed in a Premier Inn and had a great time. The kids loved it.

kitsuneghost · 07/04/2024 18:01

It depends whether you are going for
There is a lot of things to do in Blackpool. You don't have to sit round a grubby pub with crackheads and dogs if you don't want to.

Sea world etc.. Blackpool isn't that much different from any others

Blackpool as a child is one thing. Blackpool now-not a chance.

Love a Premier Inn.

Well, it's not clear from the OP whether the person is simply not choosing to visit Blackpool or stay at Premier Inns him or herself, or whether s/he is pointing and laughing at the misguided who do...?

I've never been to Blackpool, and I hate hotels anyway, luxurious or not (former room cleaner, you never quite recover), but I'm not going to bustle about vocally criticising those who go to either.

Hotelchocolatey · 07/04/2024 18:07

Blackpool is an absolute shit hole. We like to have a drive through to remind ourselves how lovely it is where we live.

My mum went to Blackpool on holiday as a child. She hated it. She's 84. She went back a couple of years ago. She wanted to see the illuminations and the ballroom. She achieved that. She said she would never, ever go again as it was an absolute dump. Premier inns are useful hotels for stop overs on the way to somewhere. No problem with them. My exhusband has just committed suicide in one so I won't be booking one for a little while.

MissingMoominMamma · 07/04/2024 18:14

I lived north of Blackpool for many years. The town centre was great; the nightlife was fantastic. There was loads to do.

I went back recently and was shocked. Really shocked. The area around Cedar Square was nice, but where the main shops are, it’s so run down.

What I noticed most though, was how unhealthy a lot of people looked.

willWillSmithsmith · 07/04/2024 18:15

I’d stay in a Premier Inn (if it was a short break) but nothing would make me go to Blackpool again.😬I don’t think there’s anything snobby about turning your nose up at Blackpool, it’s bloody horrible!

Delphiniumandlupins · 07/04/2024 18:18

I drove through Blackpool a few years ago and thought it looked unattractive but know that lots of (otherwise sensible) people like it. I have enjoyed holidays in Great Yarmouth and Scarborough - picking the bits we wanted to do. Premier Inn are clean and comfortable, in my experience. Sometimes we judge things without any actual knowledge.
