Would you find this a little snobby in someone?

If someone looked down their nose at seaside towns like Blackpool or similar, and would only stay in high-end hotels, nothing like a Premier Inn. I know it's all budget-related, though I've had perfectly good experiences with premier inns and cannot afford luxury hotels.

Great Yarmouth is a hell hole. And that’s absolutely not ‘snobby’.

Glass113 · 07/04/2024 20:09

Wrong place to ask. MN is beyond snobby!

Frangipanyoul8r · 07/04/2024 20:23

I wouldn’t find it snobby for a person to have a different opinion from me. I have very fond memories of cheap seaside town holidays, others not liking them doesn’t detract from that.

If he said something like “anyone who goes to blackpool is scum” that’d be snobby and rude.

It came up in conversation and I asked him if he'd been, he started saying, Urgh yeah, what a vile horrid place.

I am not a snobby person but I agree with him on Blackpool. Each to their own.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 07/04/2024 20:28

Premier Inn, fine. Blackpool? Not a chance in hell!

This.

It’s 100% snobbery.

It's snobbery not to want to stay in a place that's an absolute shithole?

Molonty · 07/04/2024 20:29

MississippiAF · 07/04/2024 17:37

Premier Inn’s are fine; they’re (mostly) clean and reasonable and flexible.

Blackpool - no, just no.

But see this is why I don't do premier inn. It is always prefaced with at least it's clean/something about being clean or not if someone describes it. And if it wasn't, then you can't expect much because it's a Premier Inn. A high end place, where you are spending money you can complain about it and expect something to be done. That being said, I would never say it to anyone and make them feel bad.

anxioussister · 07/04/2024 20:30

Gosh people are so different aren’t they!

private schools all the way through / mortgage free house / soho house membership / all the ‘fancy’ life trimmings

love a fun day out at blackpool with the children! Premier inn isn’t necessarily a choice I’d make if I was looking for a ‘hotel experience’ (for an anniversary or something) but I’ve stayed in plenty when they’re the most convenient option.

In my experience, if someone is suggesting or implying that your life experiences are some how ‘less’ than theirs - that’s a them problem not a you problem. Snobbishness is an easy crutch for the insecure. I know it’s easier said than done, but I honestly think the best thing to do to snobby people is have a little internal giggle and let them move on by.

somewhereovertherain · 07/04/2024 20:32

One of the best hotels I’ve stayed in across the world is in Blackpool. The BVD.

premier inn you know what you’re getting

people can be as snobby as they like who cares.

KeepingItUnderTheRadar · 07/04/2024 20:32

Has Blackpool really gone downhill in the last...mmm...9/10 years? Or have my standards always been low? 😂

We went for two nights about this long ago with elder dc who would have been about 7 and 5. We had a brilliant time. Pleasure Beach, the tower, Madame Tussauds, donkey rides on the beach for the dc. Stayed in a lovely little BnB on the front and had a couple of very decent meals out.

I mean it wasn't posh...but we thoroughly enjoyed and I can't remember there being anything particular to inspire the Blackpool hate/disgust i've seen on here!

Loopsielou · 07/04/2024 20:37

Do they still have the ride at the pleasure beach with the grand national steeple chase horses? I absolutely loved that. Might go back again if they have

ChachiChichi · 07/04/2024 20:51

Wow, so much Blackpool hate! I went for the first time in 15 years last year with my two toddlers (alone). It was ace.

All of these were next door to each other:

  • Gruffalo playhouse soft play
  • Peter Rabbit soft play
  • Sea Life aquarium

We also did afternoon tea in the tower ballroom, went to the water park, walked round the winter gardens (gorgeous building). Huge sandy beaches, piers, amusements, illuminations, the tower, Stanley Park, cheap and regular tram service along the sea front.

Actually, I hope I don't tempt the snobby haters, wouldn't want you spoiling it for us common folk hehe.

It’s 100% snobbery. But it’s a free country, each to their own.

This.

I grew up going to Blackpool as a treat. I love that my DS loves it too.

Yes!
They have the steeple chase and the grand national rollercoaster race. All the old school rides are still there apart from the cat and mouse one.

ElaineMBenes · 07/04/2024 21:01

This 100% I'm not a snob but I'd rather have pins stuck in my eyes than go to Blackpool.

Yeah that probably makes you a snob. That's okay, but at least own it!!

Loopsielou · 07/04/2024 21:03

Oh @ElaineMBenes then I'll be going this year! Glorious!

Total nostalgia!
It's still great fun

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 07/04/2024 21:09

I've never been to Blackpool and I don't plan to. It's not just its reputation as massively tacky with a huge crime rate, it's that the plus points that people list about it on threads like this are just not things I'd choose a holiday location for, partly because I don't have small children, and I hate fairground rides, and amusement arcades. Not interested in riding on donkeys either Grin

AnneElliott · 07/04/2024 21:17

I went to Blackpool a few years ago and thought it was great! Some bits a bit shabby but the Tower was lovely and the measure beach was nice and the trams were great.

thepastinsidethepresent · 07/04/2024 21:43

Oh great, another thread about the awfulness of Blackpool by people who've barely/never spent any time there. 🙄

faffadoodledo · 07/04/2024 21:50

I'm middle class to the core, and I've stayed in Blackpool! The children used to be involved in brass banding, and there was a contest there. We all travelled there by coach and stayed in a smelly hotel. It was freezing, but the prom was interesting, with its inscriptions of all the famous names who've played in Blackpool.
We had the funniest meal tho at the hotel. I and several other mums chose the cheeseboard for dessert, and were presented with a Dairylea cheese triangle, a Babybell, and plastic wrapped piece of cheddar. Tbf I quite like Dairylea. But it was funny.
Premier Inns are reliable and you (mostly) know what you're getting. I wish we'd had a Premier Inn in Blackpool instead of the smelly hotel!

Purplecatshopaholic · 07/04/2024 21:50

Wakeywake · 07/04/2024 15:51

Looking down on Blackpool is not snobbery, it's common sense.

This I’m afraid. Not a fan. Dont mind a Premier Inn though..lol

Dahlia444 · 07/04/2024 21:55

Blackpool has unfortunately made it onto the case study list of DSs A level geography as the (or one of the) areas of the UK with the most social problems - drugs, crime, violence, temporary accomodation etc. I've never been there but his description has put me off.

TheBottomsOfMyTrousersAreRolled · 07/04/2024 21:56

I have nothing against Premier Inn. If we are travelling in this country the room would be where we sleep only. And you know what you are getting with a premier inn.

But Blackpool is a hole. It is grotty. We used to go to the illuminations every year until a few years ago when some spice head made us incredibly uncomfortable. And we used to go to Slime Fest each year too but my ds said he didnt want to come back to Blackpool as he didnt like it. He really didnt like the massive dungeons poster. Crime rate, health statistics, poverty. It is not a nice place.

We went to Rhyl once and thought it was also a grotty hole of a place too. We got back int the car quite quickly and headed to Llandudno instead. Loved it there.

HelloMiss · 07/04/2024 15:49

Yes to premier inn, no way to Blackpool!

Same!

Ive spent plenty of time there. Absolutely loads. It is a shit hole. If you think otherwise you need to see more of the country.

that is not to say there are not nicer areas on the outskirts. We used to be at the zoo almost weekly.
