To be pissed at my name being laughed at constantly

So I'll let you guess my name.....

Today I had a hospital procedure and every member of staff laughed at my name. I was asked if it really was my name and what the weather forecast is for tomorrow.

On the form I had to fill out first it asked what you would like to be called so I put my nickname to hopefully avoid this but that didn't work. I didn't say anything as I didn't want to make it awkward and wanted the procedure over with as soon as possible.

Not the first time this has happened, at a different hospital last month one nurse couldn't stop laughing and asking me questions..

I'm in my late 40's, used to love my name but it's becoming a nightmare.

Fuck you Amazon

It's making me cringe seeing the crap guesses, shows the posters have not bothered to read the username, nor any of the thread.

dontbelievewhatyousee · 27/03/2024 20:44

Better than if you were called Siri, or Isis.

Delphinium20 · 27/03/2024 20:49

I love both names, Alexa and Siri.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 27/03/2024 20:50

It's rude & disrespectful of anyone let alone professionals to laugh at your name even worse in a NHS setting.

If that was any team member of mine they would be getting a damn good talking too & if it happened again a verbal warning.

You should complain.

HumphreysCorner · 27/03/2024 20:51

Summer, Autumn or Winter which are all lovely

TeenyTinyCrocodile · 27/03/2024 20:51

They should have been (better) trained about that.

Indeed, but one can only wonder how people can get through recruitment and then years of training for professional jobs such as these and still need (more) training, as though common courtesy and a professional attitude towards patients is some kind of mystical extra that a good proportion of these staff need help to figure out.

Your toes would curl if I wrote out all the disrespectful patronising rubbish (and sometimes downright discrimination) trotted out to my quite old (and seems older due to a disability) parent, that is supposedly amusing in a beneficial way to him (it isn't).

TeenyTinyCrocodile · 27/03/2024 20:53

@TracyBeakerSoYeah So glad you're on this thread saying so 😁

We know it's not all staff and that many are like you and won't do it and will nip it in the bud when others do. But it does seem too frequent to me in the system as a whole.

Sure. The username often makes it clear, doesn't it? If anybody calls me anything other than Possum, that's it.

TeenyTinyCrocodile · 27/03/2024 20:30

I’m a nurse and would probably not comment

Just "would probably not comment"? Rather than "would definitely not comment because it's rude, highly inappropriate, and puts patients in an impossible position because, like the OP, they are particularly vulnerable at that point and the least worst thing for them to often do for themselves is to challenge it which isn't fair on them at all".

You, and the staff the OP are talking about, and all other healthcare staff who seem to like doing this supposedly to put people at their ease (clue: it doesn't), should learn very fast to respect people and just NOT comment and try to be funny about people's names or whatever other charactertistic you might find hilarious about a patient, and just get on with your jobs, please, in a pleasant manner.

100%

In a thread like this I would say so.

NoMoreFalafelForYou · 27/03/2024 20:55

I love the name Alexa. I don’t have one (the Amazon thing) so I don’t associate it with that. I honestly thought you were going to say your name was Carol Kirkwood but also love the Wincey Willis mention!

SoupDragon · 27/03/2024 20:57

AhBiscuits · 27/03/2024 20:38

Can you play my rainy day playlist?

So, on a thread where the poster is complaining about people laughing at her name, you decide to take the piss out of it? Seriously?

vanillawaffle · 27/03/2024 21:00

AhBiscuits · 27/03/2024 20:38

Can you play my rainy day playlist?

Do you think that's funny? Given the nature of the OP I think it's quite insensitive.

Emptyheadlock · 27/03/2024 21:04

I thought you were going to say Michael Fish 😳

Alexa is normal and lovely. Not remotely amusing to compare to amazon alexa.

Funnywonder · 27/03/2024 21:17

What are people like? Honestly, I would never ever make a joke about someone's name. My name was in a really popular 80s song and I was tortured with people taking the piss. And they always seemed to think they were so original🙄

WhoaJayShettybambalam · 27/03/2024 21:21

Alexa is a beautiful name.

I’m appalled at hospital staff making you feel like this.

ADHDm · 27/03/2024 21:22

So your name is Alexa with no funny connecting Surname?

Not Alexa Amazon. Or anything vaguely funny.

Why would 'just Alexa' be even worthy to comment on.

PurpleFlower1983 · 27/03/2024 21:31

It’s such a shame the name Alexa has been well and truly high jacked.

FernwoodRydal · 27/03/2024 21:34

I'm really sorry that happens to you. However someone at school called Alexa was really unpleasant to me 20 years ago so part of me is 😂at this. She deserves it, I'm sure not all Alexas do!

seven201 · 27/03/2024 21:36

I'd be pissed off too. It's a lovely name. In lockdown I was attempting to teach via teams and took the register. When I said Alexa my Alexa started with it's "sorry, I don't understand" and I did the whole, 'oh, isn't that funny' thing. After I realised that poor girl probably had that happen in lots of her lessons and was most likely fed up with it. I think Amazon should have used an uncommon name or even made one up.

Pixit · 27/03/2024 21:36

My friend Osama says just own it.

Gruffallowhydidntyouknow · 27/03/2024 21:39

I wanted to use the name but didn't because of the association. Its a shame it got spoiled as its beautiful.

SoupChicken · 27/03/2024 21:39

redalex261 · 27/03/2024 20:09

That’s nothing. I have seen some stunningly bad forenames on paperwork. For example:

Yaris.(FGS, just go with Paris)
Sierra Cosworth (1st & middle name, clearly in honour of that eighties iconic vehicle)
Ocean (just why? especially partnered with a surname something like McClunkybum….)
Kennethina (the very worst of the ones where the parents wanted a boy)
Chardonnay (I am not kidding, blame Footballer’s Wives)
Armani & Jazz (siblings)
Khalessi (Game of Thrones anyone?)

So count yourself lucky, Alexa is a lovely name. No need for fiddling round with deed poll changes!

I hope to god that’s the same Sierra Cosworth I was at school with, otherwise that means there are two little girls with that name!

Fwiw I think a group of women in France tried to sue Renault to stop them calling their car the Zoe Renault because they would be made fun of but they lost.

user1471554720 · 27/03/2024 21:40

If people laugh, ask them why are they laughing at your name, while staring. Make them answer. Then ask them if they would like you to laugh at their name. So rude.
