To be pissed at my name being laughed at constantly

So I'll let you guess my name.....

Today I had a hospital procedure and every member of staff laughed at my name. I was asked if it really was my name and what the weather forecast is for tomorrow.

On the form I had to fill out first it asked what you would like to be called so I put my nickname to hopefully avoid this but that didn't work. I didn't say anything as I didn't want to make it awkward and wanted the procedure over with as soon as possible.

Not the first time this has happened, at a different hospital last month one nurse couldn't stop laughing and asking me questions..

I'm in my late 40's, used to love my name but it's becoming a nightmare.

Fuck you Amazon

Wincey?

Enko · 27/03/2024 23:21

Alexa is a beautiful name. We had it on our shortlist for DD1 Alexa/Alexia but she didn't look like an Alexa/ia It is a great shame it has been taken over by Amazon.

Hermittrismegistus · 27/03/2024 23:22

Not quite anything you wish. names are fixed at Alex, Ziggy and Computer

Ha! I didn't realise that. I named mine Computer because Star Trek. Didn't realise it was one of the only options.

PrincessOlga · 27/03/2024 23:25

I'm glad I don't work at a hospital, because I would have been the odd one out, not "getting" what everyone was giggling at. I don't have Amazon or whatever the connection with Alexa is, so I don't "get" it.

Alexandra is a beautiful name, by the way. Conjures up associations for me with the names of queens, turn of the century elegance or, at the very least, Alexis Carrington in "Dynasty" (?).

It can also be shortened to Alex and I think female names sound great when they are shortened to a name which doubles up as a male name.

All mine are male Ziggy Stardust’s, though must admit I did think a Radiohead moment of ‘ok computer’ would be quite cool 😂

That’s really inappropriate, I’m not surprised you’re annoyed.

My hygienist makes jokes about my name every time I see her (I have the same surname as a fictional character). It’s not even an unusual name , so tedious.

Superted?!

It was nasty of Amazon to choose an actual name, when it was extremely obvious how negatively that was going to affect people with that name.

They could have just chosen 'Assistant' or 'Robot' or something (although I suppose that could equally have affected people called Robert, depending on your accent!).

Michael Fish?

😅🤣 I actually guffawed at this 😂

WhatICallMyUsername · 27/03/2024 23:38

There is also Amazon as a wake word which actually makes more sense to ask than Alexa!

I am tempted to change mine and not tell anyone to stop them adding crap to the shopping list!!

CanNeverThinkOfAName · 27/03/2024 23:40

The ‘fuck you Amazon’ made me laugh OP.

I’d make a formal complaint. It’s totally unprofessional to mock someone’s name especially so openly.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/03/2024 23:40

Could be worse. At least it’s not Hey Google.

I’m surprised they they didn’t call it Jeff or Jeffrey with a male voice!

A formal complaint? FFS Get a grip

My mind went straight to Wincey Willis until I saw the amazon comment at the end. Showing my age!

OP, that's horribly unprofessional of the medical staff. I'd be tempted to put in a complaint to stop it happening again.

It's a lovely name so cherish the attention when it's positive.

Their behaviour was wildly unprofessional. I think a complaint is warranted.

Flickersy · 27/03/2024 23:49

Could be worse. You could be called Isis.

SirQuintusAurelius · 27/03/2024 23:53

If it makes you feel any better, there are plenty of men called Harry Potter from barristers to engineers who lived an uneventful life until the end of the 1990s. It's a feature of life that the future is uncertain as is the associations with any given name as Karen, Tracey, Sharon and Kevin will tell you.

Two options for you - accept it or change your name. That's all there is here unfortunately.

It's a gorgeous name, and was around long before that Amazon shite.
The hospital staff were very unprofessional.

Wouldn't you be tempted to put just a shadow of a lightning scar on your forehead?

DysmalRadius · 28/03/2024 00:10

I know a Paul McCartney who is about the same age as THE Paul McCartney so he lived a perfectly normal life for about 20 years and then every time he met a new person he'd get:

Say hi to John/George/Ringo for me

Can't believe you've given up music to be a teacher

Are you named after him (despite that clearly being impossible).

He's always said that the worst thing was just how unoriginal all the jokes and comments are and each person thinks that they will be the only one to say it so it's a bit unreasonable to get arsey about it, but it's actually horrible meeting new people and knowing that you're going to have to get over their reaction to your name and not be snarky about yet another round of jokes and comments (he is a far nicer person than me!!).

I do feel called upon to mention the amazing Jewish pianist Myra Hess (yes, very unfortunate name combo), who played concerts during the Blitz. She was a great musician and by all accounts person. So at least your auntie can take comfort from a good Myra!!

Oh I've not heard of her!!
Unfortunate name indeed. I'll ask auntie M if she's heard of her. She sounds awesome!

Fwiw, I think Mara is a beautiful name.

I think of Alexa Chung when I hear the name Alexa, even though I have one of the infernal devices.

Its a beautiful name and it was very weird and unprofessional behaviour of the hospital staff to laugh. It isn’t strange or funny at all.

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/03/2024 01:07

It’s a really beautiful name op. I’m sorry some people are very childish. The Micky taking was really unprofessional. My 15 yo dd is so upset by what some of the nurses said to her at a recent trip to A&E. This was about her medical condition and clumsy speaking. People really don’t realise the impact of their words.

@Zapss There are people alive today with the surname Hitler. It was his surname. Some spell it Hittler.

LiterallyOnFire · 28/03/2024 05:30

NotAmazonAlexa · 27/03/2024 20:07

I'm not changing my name, I'm too old for that crap.

It just gets irritating when you hear the same "jokes" daily.

Just needed a moan that's all....

Does heavy sarcasm help? A La "Wow. How original. I've never heard that one before."
