To be pissed at my name being laughed at constantly

So I'll let you guess my name.....

Today I had a hospital procedure and every member of staff laughed at my name. I was asked if it really was my name and what the weather forecast is for tomorrow.

On the form I had to fill out first it asked what you would like to be called so I put my nickname to hopefully avoid this but that didn't work. I didn't say anything as I didn't want to make it awkward and wanted the procedure over with as soon as possible.

Not the first time this has happened, at a different hospital last month one nurse couldn't stop laughing and asking me questions..

I'm in my late 40's, used to love my name but it's becoming a nightmare.

Fuck you Amazon

I'm Alexandra, and I work in IT on-site support. Some of the users think that this is a good idea to call me Alexa. Because Alexa helps, right?
Drives me crazy. This is not even my name.

It hardly new, for example the name 'Jesse' use to be used derogatorily for boys etc... just watch any Billy Connelly stand up.

That would be the girl’s name Jessie, short for Jessica. Nothing to do with the male name Jesse.

It was a derogatory name used exclusively for boys.

They are spelling variants of the same base and used interchangeably.

All you did was prove my point.

MerryChristmasToYou · 01/04/2024 11:37

And he's Billy Connolly.

It’s not a derogatory name. Jesse is a biblical name.

Yabvu to be 'pissed'. Assume you meant 'pissed off'?

Alexa is a beautiful name. I would really not tolerate comments on it OP, and tell people so as soon as they start up. Bunch of idiots.

Perhaps she was so annoyed she downed a couple of bottles of wine 🤷🏻‍♀️

MerryChristmasToYou · 01/04/2024 13:10

@Dewdilly , 'big jessie' is a derogatory term.

Jessie : noun a weak or effeminate man.

  • A Scottish and northern English term of ridicule which has become widespread since the mid-1970s, partly due to the influence of comics such as the Scot, Billy Connolly. It is synonymous with nellie and big girl’s blouse.

In that case, perfectly reasonable to write pissed! That wasn't what was meant here, though.

to be pissed in this context is perfectly normal slang in some areas. Hardly difficult to work out.

Well every day is a schooldays. I've never heard of anyone called Siiri before.

I know all that. But Jesse isn’t. That’s the point.

MerryChristmasToYou · 01/04/2024 14:16

But they sound the same.

So what? They’re not the same, just like hair and hare, or see and sea. They’re unrelated words. I’d pronounce them slightly differently anyway.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 01/04/2024 14:34

I really hope companies/sad bastards online stop using proper names for things now. It could be any one of our names being the butt of the joke and none of us would be happy then. I love the name Alexa. I've got a name "of its time" and dread it being used in a hilarious way

Sallysappho · 01/04/2024 14:37

Did hospital staff really laugh at you, sounds highly unprofessional

Yes they did. I don't know if they thought it might help me to relax before the procedure or not?
The nurse called my name in the waiting room, when I got to the door she said "Alexa?? Is that really your name??" Then in procedure room the Dr said "Alexa what's the weather tomorrow??" Both nurses were then laughing. I laughed with them as I had been waiting three hours and just wanted the procedure over with. Probably not the best idea, and yes I should've said something. But they were the people with the pain relief and sedatives so....

I immediately thought of Cheery Littlebottom 😃

Miaminmoo · 03/04/2024 02:11

I don’t think it’s that entertaining, if I met someone called Alexa I don’t think I’d make that joke at all, mainly because I would be sure it wouldn’t be very original. Sorry these idiots ruined your day, I think it’s a lovely name.

When I was having ds by elective caesarean (quite some time ago) the doctors were all discussing necrotising fasciitis or whatever that flesh eating bug is called over my open wound while I was lying there wide awake. My mum had to ask them to stop. 😑

Karen?

Edit: missed the amazon bit! Alexa then!

I have a friend called Karen and she absolutely hates it now. People constantly smirk and ask if she is one.

Edited

Me too! Someone at work actually said 'Don't be a Karen' and then went oops!

DilysPrice · 31/03/2024 11:33

Yes I've got a Thomas Thomas in the Welsh part of my family tree.

My family were from North Yorkshire and we have a Garbutt Garbutt in our family tree - his brother was Marmaduke!

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/04/2024 12:28

Marmaduke is fabulous

TheBerry · 04/04/2024 10:49

Seems so weird

I mean, if someone told me their name was Alexa, I would instantly think of Amazon Alexa. But it wouldn’t then cross my mind at all that it was funny enough / unusual enough to make jokes about it?? Not to mention the professional setting.

NeedWineNow · 04/04/2024 11:21

It's beyond irritating when people belittle your name (and as my name is Karen I know all about it). Alexa is a lovely name, and the nursing staff were rude and unprofessional to poke fun of you.

tracy25xx · 04/04/2024 13:03

they should not laugh though lexi is nice
