To be pissed at my name being laughed at constantly

So I'll let you guess my name.....

Today I had a hospital procedure and every member of staff laughed at my name. I was asked if it really was my name and what the weather forecast is for tomorrow.

On the form I had to fill out first it asked what you would like to be called so I put my nickname to hopefully avoid this but that didn't work. I didn't say anything as I didn't want to make it awkward and wanted the procedure over with as soon as possible.

Not the first time this has happened, at a different hospital last month one nurse couldn't stop laughing and asking me questions..

I'm in my late 40's, used to love my name but it's becoming a nightmare.

Fuck you Amazon

Could be worse, my auntie is called Myra 😶

Carol Kirkwood?

No. It's Alexa

whatageareyou · 27/03/2024 20:13

Ah I'm so sorry, you really do have a lovely name

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 27/03/2024 20:14

It's a lovely name. But I would be tempted to call myself Alex.

tarheelbaby · 27/03/2024 20:15

All sympathy here. I have an unusual name and I'm so over the reactions to it.

Their behaviour was shockingly unprofessional! You should report. The first time it happens is a surprise but another time, interrupt the procedure, refuse to continue and demand to see the next level up (ward sister? shift supervisor? floor manager?)

As teen, I failed (and quite rightly too) an interview for making too many jokes about one of the interviewer's names (think Phil Collins)

Do file a complaint. NHS staff should not be teasing (mocking) patients' names. They should have been (better) trained about that. How many unlucky men called Harry Potter must there be? This is essential feedback for them even if it's a pain for you.

existentialpain · 27/03/2024 20:15

People are being ridiculous and childish, the name Alexa was around long before the technology came about. I knew an Alexa years ago.

garlictwist · 27/03/2024 20:17

Michael Fish?

garlictwist · 27/03/2024 20:17

Michael Fish?

It’s Alexa.

pictoosh · 27/03/2024 20:19

I think of Alexa as a name, not the Amazon thingy. It's a nice name too.
People who comment like that are stupid.

PrincessOfPreschool · 27/03/2024 20:19

DS1 had a teacher called Alexa in Year 1 - and now he's doing A levels! She was an absolutely angel so I think of her when I hear the name. She had a baby called Pearl as I recall so if it's you then 👋 and I hope you're OK.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/03/2024 20:19

I had a boss called Alexa at my old work. She was pretty confident so styled it out. Her family is German, I’m not sure if that’s where the name comes from?

If you really hate it you could start being known as Alex, or Al, Ali?

Swoopy · 27/03/2024 20:20

That’s really inappropriate, I’m not surprised you’re annoyed.

My hygienist makes jokes about my name every time I see her (I have the same surname as a fictional character). It’s not even an unusual name , so tedious.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/03/2024 20:20

I do think Amazon were wrong to pick a fairly standard name for the name of their assistant device - it’s never been an unheard of name and this was obviously going to cause people problems.

Excited101 · 27/03/2024 20:21

I knew of a ‘Chardonnay’, her grandad used to call her ‘Plonk’ 🤣

Zebrasinpyjamas · 27/03/2024 19:47

That's such a strange reaction from medical staff and very unprofessional. Alexa is a lovely name that unfortunately has been taken over by Amazon.

Totally agree with this.
That is a bizarre reaction from every member of staff.
Alexa is a perfectly normal name

postcard · 27/03/2024 20:22

I like the name Alexa. I still recall meeting a stunningly beautiful German girl called that.

I thought initially you were called Amazon. And I thought what a strong and excellent name that was.

Flyinghighhighinthesky · 27/03/2024 20:25

I smile when I hear the name...love Alexa in Schitts Creek. Such a hit show I can't believe people think the name is "funny" or unusual.

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 27/03/2024 20:25

I really like Alexa / Alexis, lovely names.
Could be worse ( Siri )

TeenyTinyCrocodile · 27/03/2024 20:30

I’m a nurse and would probably not comment

Just "would probably not comment"? Rather than "would definitely not comment because it's rude, highly inappropriate, and puts patients in an impossible position because, like the OP, they are particularly vulnerable at that point and the least worst thing for them to often do for themselves is to challenge it which isn't fair on them at all".

You, and the staff the OP are talking about, and all other healthcare staff who seem to like doing this supposedly to put people at their ease (clue: it doesn't), should learn very fast to respect people and just NOT comment and try to be funny about people's names or whatever other charactertistic you might find hilarious about a patient, and just get on with your jobs, please, in a pleasant manner.

TeenyTinyCrocodile · 27/03/2024 20:31

OP, YADNBU and I encourage you to speak up when/if you feel able and ready to, about this, to empower yourself and give yourself some closure, and to help other patients who may not be able to speak up.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 27/03/2024 20:33

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 27/03/2024 20:35

EatCrow · 27/03/2024 20:36

Gail? Raine?

Oops, a bit late.

AhBiscuits · 27/03/2024 20:38

Can you play my rainy day playlist?

Could be worse, my auntie is called Myra 😶

I do feel called upon to mention the amazing Jewish pianist Myra Hess (yes, very unfortunate name combo), who played concerts during the Blitz. She was a great musician and by all accounts person. So at least your auntie can take comfort from a good Myra!!
