To wonder which way the vote will go?

There'll be a general election this year and there's been such a lot of chat everywhere about the Torys losing.

I'd love to think this will be the case, but was thinking where will the votes go! I've always voted labour, and will again, but is there a chance the Torys might get back in?

Maybe there's a big set of silent voters who'll vote them back!

Is the consensus here that they will lose? And if so, to labour?

Labour are bailing on funded childcare hours and can't define what a woman is - they are well on their way to losing half the voting population.

Proof they are bailing, please? Because that sounds like the line Keegan has been trotting out today.

How can Labour bail on something that doesn't even exist?

They are ‘bailing’ to look at how to structure it properly with enough providers and at an affordable price.

They are looking to improve the current childcare nightmare.

I wish! But alas Keir has zero charisma and his party aren't doing to well, bloody shame.

Why do people post utter shit like this? Labour are way ahead in the polls.

Maybe they think no one actually follows politics? Bizarre.

I honestly dont see how anyone that hasnt been living under a rock for the last 14 years can cast their vote for more of the same under another conservative government.

  • National debt more than doubled since 2010 to over 2.5 trillion approaching 100% of GDP.
  • NHS in tatters (and yes there is more money going in but they are including the 37 billion for test and trace - effectively laundering public money in to their pals pockets)
  • Schools crumbling
  • Rivers and oceans literally full of shit
  • Immigration the highest its ever been
  • Society divided along so many lines I've lost track
  • Roads look like open strip mines
  • Inward investment fallen off a cliff
  • Foodbank usage off the charts

And all this with record high taxation.

Where the hell is the money going?

Edited

Isn't the consensus

  • paying off Covid
  • increasing bill for NHS
  • increasing bill for social care - old and economically inactive
  • lost by irresponsible persons (lots during covid, see above.)

And possibly lost EU subsidies?

I must say that what the NHS does and doesn't pay for is a source of constant wonder to me.

Yes. But Brexit was not a GE, was it? So comparing apples and oranges.

The polls (and possibly the bookies I haven't checked) have called every GE right since 1992. In 1992 the polls were very narrow, not the 20 point lead Labour has now.

Also a lot of ignorant people keep conflating Brexit loyalties with party ones - the very fact the Tories called the referendum shows they, like Labour were split over Brexit (and still are), as are/were their supporters.

Why should older people get to decide on policy when they’re not the ones that will have to bear the brunt of it for many years to come? It was the exact same situation with Brexit

My 100+yr old grandparent has earned their vote. In the war they more than did their share; they worked all their life and always had a volunteer role in addition, right up to their late nineties; they raised two citizens are good as they were; they provided full time care for their spouse with dementia, unpaid, for 25 years; even now they make this country a better place not just for their family but for many in their village and some further afield.

Of course they didn't have to earn their vote. But if it had to be earned, some of the oldest people I know should be at the front of the queue.

And as for the future not affecting them... how tragic if by old age someone hasn't learned to think beyond their own immediate interests. I've often voted against my financial interests, because I vote for what I consider best for the country.

They didn’t buy it to spite you. They bought it because controls on renting property eere reduced.
Its enabled by the government not the ‘Boomers’

The ageism on this thread is shocking.

So if the government told you to put your hand in the fire, I guess you'd do it.

Honestly, just stop blaming others for the weakness and greed of too many of the Boomers. There's no show without Punch Hmm

HardyJoker · 27/03/2024 15:09

With the stupidity and ignorance of so many people in this country I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if Labour got in. In my opinion there should be a higher age requirement on voting because of this

Because a vote for this shower is so very intelligent? Ahahahahaha

I'm over 60 btw

If only it was that simple.

Things change proverbially quickly on politics. At the moment it looks like a labour landslide. A Tory win is a remote possibility and a hung parliament not likely, but my second guess.

JessS1990 · 27/03/2024 19:04

ManchesterBeatrice · 27/03/2024 18:41

Yes I feel a bit like labour will win. But not a landslide.

I have a varied circle but don't know any single issue Tory voters in real life so don't think it will sway it overall.

We shall see.

Thanks for the poll links ☺️

Its not really about feelings though is it.

Latest polling suggests for instance that Labour will gain mid Devon from the Tories.

Given that Johnson's 80 seat majority was considered a landslide, I would suggest that all the available evidence suggests that Labour will indeed win bigger than that.

FloofyBird · 27/03/2024 19:05

Never say never, most of us thought Brexit would never happen then loads of people didn't even vote and it did!

With the stupidity and ignorance of so many people in the country with those who can't see further than the end of the Daily Mail I shouldn't be surprised if the Tories were voted back in.

In my opinion there should be a higher intelligence level requirement on voting. At the very least people should inform themselves better.

This is why Sunak needed to go for a May election.
Then he could argue that the lack of childcare places was due to initial teething difficulties that would be smoothed out.

By October it will be clear that the policy really only exists to enrich his wife's business.

The amazing thing is that Sunak is orders of magnitude more dull that Starmer. Sunak sounds bored of himself when he is delivering each of his relaunches.

I've heard Sunak is so dull that when he looks in a mirror there is no reflection.

MagnetForDust · 27/03/2024 19:11

He's very handsome though and he has a pretty wife 🙃

SoIf · 27/03/2024 19:12

My feelings are it will be a hung parliament. You only have to travel out into the moneyed shires to see the shy tories. There's lots of them who don't fill out polls or shout out loud. I doubt it will be a Labour landslide, but will stand corrected if wrong.

They didn't seem to turn up in the Kingswood by-election, or any previous by-elections going back to North Shropshire. The latter is an area I know well, it was and is deeply conservative. Until the current MP it had always had a Conservative MP.

A vote for any party except labour could keep the tories in, as could sulky non voting.
If you really want the tories gone you have to take action and vote labour whether or not you agree with every policy.

No. Depends where you are. There are websites which explains the options. Not sure MN will let us link though? There are many seats in South and SW England where Libdems are best placed to unseat the incumbent.

They are not bailing on funded hours, they're saying that the Tories' plans are not viable. Which we all knew anyway.

I think the massive majorities recently overturned by Labour and the Lib Dems would suggest that the shy Tories are a little disillusioned with their party.

Even my cousin, a party member and dyed in the wool Tory voter is not voting in this election. This isn't 1992.
