Bringing baked goods into work

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

My DD is in year 13 at school, they have a "cake Friday" rota where someone in their form brings cake each week. The boys especially are very enthusiastic about it apparently!

Edited

My y13’s did this.

I used to put it on ‘Show my Homework’ to remind them!

I'm an actual baker with a cake business. You do not under any circumstances need a certificate to take bakes to work. Even registered established businesses don't have to have them as long as they are registered with the council. Cake making is considered a safe food hence the council not being in any rush to do ratings. These women are going to be screwed when home businesses no longer need ratings. You carry on baking lovely anx spreading joy. They are simply jelous!!!

It saddens me that these two older women are on the verge of bullying. (Passive agressive at least. They have obviously thought about how to control your occasional treat to the office as it doesn't suit them.) I would definately go to your manager and ask advice on the cake thing. If a good manager, they will note these 2 as potential bullies. Draw the line in the sand now. Also keep away from these two... Good luck.

@Fizbosshoes - tablet is a Scottish sweet that is almost pure sugar: a tin of condensed milk, 2lb caster sugar, 1/4lb butter, 1 cup milk Shock

The technique for making it results in a sort of cross between fudge and toffee: think of it like a crisp fudge or a melt-in-the-mouth toffee. It’s difficult to make consistently (takes a long time standing stirring over the stove and you only find out if it’s a good batch after it has set), which is something I’ve mastered Grin

I now make it without having a single piece myself (because I can’t have a single piece Blush) I most often make it for friends as gifts or for cake stalls at the rugby club for fund raising and it is always very popular Smile

Had you considered starting a mail order business? I've still not got over Thornton's stopping their chocolate butter tablet which I could exist solely on given half the chance! That stuff was heaven in a packet. 👼

I have considered it but decided that getting the appropriate certification (Wink given this thread Grin) wasn’t worth the hassle.

Doing it as a business would give me a very strong left arm though from all the stirring and beating Grin (I do try to do a bit of the stirring/beating with my right arm but can never do it for long Hmm)

They could always bring in what they consider to be appropriate foods. Report their comments to your manager. Get the ok to continue.

Wow! Didn’t expect such a huge response. I’ve read every one and thank you for sharing your opinions.

Funny thing is it’s probably me that should be on a diet - I’m a size 18- I don’t love my body but I’m very grateful for my body.

These two ladies are so slim!

Ive spoken to my manager. He’s rolled his eyes and told me I’d get a disciplinary if I stopped baking 🤭
He told me I didn’t need a health and safety certificate.

I also called the HR office and the guy there said it was fine as long as once in a while I took some up to their office as well. I’m baking the a cherry Bakewell tray bake for tomorrow 😋

I asked my line manager about this thread the other day, he said "they should discipline her if she stops baking and manage those two eejits out of the office completely if they try to "report" her LOL!

take no notice.

do a cake in the shape of a middle finger!

Every week and I could see that might be a bit annoying for people with little willpower, but every six weeks sounds lovely.

But even so… that’s THEIR problem!
why should everyone else miss out on nice treats just because two people don’t have willpower?!

paddyclampofthethirdkind · 28/03/2024 17:48

They’re being miseries! Ignore them! (Not sure why their age was relevant to the story though 🤔)

OnePlumFatball · 29/03/2024 10:38

Proof that bing skinny won't make you happy 😂
You can bring cake to my work if ya want,😜

FrenchieFan · 29/03/2024 12:28

I’m a manager of 22 and I would be most grateful to have you on my team bringing in home baked goods! They have their own food related issues that they need to deal with and need to be ignored. Do not let them get under your skin. You are not acting as a business selling these cakes at your office you’re bringing in home baked treats and people are choosing to eat them. Enjoy your baking, and know the rest of your team are very grateful! HR will laugh them out the room..

mollyminniemo · 29/03/2024 15:55

If only you worked in my office!! There’s nothing I love more than a lovely homemade cake but unlike you I can’t bake to save my life. These women sound like absolute dullards. Nobody who makes it known they are diet/ health/ fitness obsessed actually is in any decent shape just presenting this wannabe image to the outside world - they also clearly have any willpower. Ignore!!

terrimom · 29/03/2024 23:04

I am the baker in my office and tend to bring a treat in on Friday afternoons because I work the later shift that day and spend my morning baking to de-stress and just so I don't forget how. I have occasionally had a complainer or two (when they are just miserable and hangry from trying to diet) and once or twice it was actually a manager. I just skipped the following week and then started bringing in again. I did try to place the baked goods in a less obvious location and just tell people where to find them so that it was accessible to those who wanted it and not so tempting for those trying to "be good". Occasionally I would bring in an alternate treat like hummus and carrots but 95% of the time it's baked goods.

Your thread made it to Facebook, OP!

Bringing baked goods into work
acatcalledjohn · 29/03/2024 23:57

That's one hell of a misleading headline by vt.

Adventurekreacher · 04/04/2024 09:59

I think they're out of order too.
To be the bigger person you could bake and bring in some healthy(er) treats, labeled with calories etc and see if they have any then!!

Weezypopsy · 15/06/2024 10:27

Although the OP had a great resolution, I really want to know what happened later- are the two miseries still complaining?
