Bringing baked goods into work

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:03

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

Yes. In my experience men don’t behave in that irritating fashion. They just take the cake or leave it.

Well not in mine!

MalbecMel · 26/03/2024 20:04

Ignore them. Home-baked is a darn sight healthier than ultra processed. They could bring in other snacks that they deem healthier if they wish. The food hygiene thing is false, when your baking as a gift it is fair game - I checked with regards to donating food for sale on the PTA and that's being sold on!

Rosejasmine · 26/03/2024 20:12

You only need a hygiene certificate from the council if you are selling the baked goods as a business. You wouldn’t get into trouble even if people did become ill. I would them politely that you don’t need a food hygiene certificate to bring in cakes from home and that you will continue to bring them in. They are so rude!

WitchesCauldron · 26/03/2024 20:47

What a miserable pair- food hygiene certificate-jobsworths too. They're just put out that they can't join in. I'd love to work in your office!

Take some carrot sticks in so they have something to nibble on. They're just being mean spirited to my mind.

Londonrach1 · 26/03/2024 20:50

Ask the manager. Tbh I'd be vvv grateful for someone like you. I bet the rest of the team is

TorringtonDean · 26/03/2024 20:51

Maybe the office pair resorted to the food hygiene line because their completely reasonable request was being ignored. Maybe they were called fun sponges or fat cunts -
as they have been here. In fact they are not fat. Isn’t it reasonable to make a request and hope it is listened to? But it appears they are stubbornly ignored because it’s more important to feed up the colleagues.

Londonrach1 · 26/03/2024 20:54

Bakewell tart! Yummy. .where's your work as might need to pop in to use the toilet or get a glass of water.

No they are ignored because they are miserable bastards, and the large majority love it.

Ahhh I've cracked it TorringtonDean is one of the work colleagues who moaned..... hiya 👋 not going the way you planned in work or the thread....😉

Jeannie88 · 26/03/2024 21:04

Oh my word, she can't trust herself so wants you to stop making the day for most people? I worked somewhere where someone said the same thing, well wanted to ban all unhealthy snacks from staffroom. Dictators and selfish

Sorry, but not having their way 3% of the time is an issue?

I have taken the liberty of creating a little pie chart based on the 1 day in 6 weeks (30 working days) frequency mentioned by the OP. Perhaps the visual will help you understand that on balance these colleagues have no cake concerns 97% of the time.

Well I’m certainly getting workplace bullying vibes. None of you appear to have any willpower. You are all so addicted to cake you will not consider other points of view at all and shout them down.

Your posts are downright weird.

TorringtonDean · 26/03/2024 21:35

@StarlightLime as I said about the vibes…. Glad I don’t work there.

What about a dog shaped cake laced with heroin?

I think that’s fine

Autumnleavesarebrown · 26/03/2024 21:51

I work from home if you want to drop round :)

laminaHK · 26/03/2024 21:53

What a couple of fucking losers those women are 😂

I'm offended you made a pie chart as I've been trying to avoid pie for years and youve ruined it!

Do you need a hygiene certificate to make a pie chart?

xsquared · 26/03/2024 22:15

There are some very strange posts here, so much projection and rewriting the narrative, that I really do think they're on the wind up.

Once every 6 weeks isn't my idea of constantly force feeding anyone sugary crap, and actually, nobody cares whether you take a piece of cake or not.

I also wish that new posters would at least read the OP's posts under See all which isn't a premium feature, so that they know that she has indeed asked her manager amd HR, and neither of them have a problem with it.

From my own experience, there was "Friday Treats" or "Cake day" every week, which was a bit excessive to me, but I certainly didn't feel compelled to eat any of it and nobody ever judged.

I now work mostly in an area with just one other colleague as we don't venture into the main office much, and neither of us bring cake unless it's the other's birthday. I am more likely to bring a huge bagful of the excess apples from my tree.

Wow! Didn’t expect such a huge response. I’ve read every one and thank you for sharing your opinions.

Funny thing is it’s probably me that should be on a diet - I’m a size 18- I don’t love my body but I’m very grateful for my body.

These two ladies are so slim!

Ive spoken to my manager. He’s rolled his eyes and told me I’d get a disciplinary if I stopped baking 🤭
He told me I didn’t need a health and safety certificate.

I also called the HR office and the guy there said it was fine as long as once in a while I took some up to their office as well. I’m baking the a cherry Bakewell tray bake for tomorrow 😋

Brilliant!

WimbyAce · 26/03/2024 22:29

Let them eat cake! Honestly some people will moan about anything. I love cake and would be filling my boots, carry on and ignore them.

You have this whole thing completely the wrong way round. The bully was the colleague who threatened to use HR against someone doing a nice thing for her coworkers. And yes, evidence of a lack of willpower if you can’t see others consuming cake without having to stuff it in your own face.

acatcalledjohn · 26/03/2024 23:25

Do you need a hygiene certificate to make a pie chart?

Depends on whether you excel at making them...
