Bringing baked goods into work

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:03

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

@Waitingforgeorge it's a public forum, I think anyone can answer?

OP looks to be long gone. .... probably baking for Easter 🐣

TorringtonDean · 27/03/2024 11:12

@Fizbosshoes I have to admit cherry bakewells are not tempting! Not a favourite of mine.

But are you not familiar with the idea of people relapsing when they have made a big effort to give up bad habits? If you are an alcoholic one small drink can lead you back to big-time addiction. Same if you are a sugar addict.

I don’t have an eating disorder. I am overweight but I have fought very hard against it and I am very careful with what I eat. If I let myself have a treat or two that can lead to an avalanche. I can’t believe I am the only person like that! I have bucketloads of willpower but there are times when I can weaken.

Maybe these colleagues are also like that and just don’t need the temptation. It’s a workplace. Don’t their views count?

If you've it got an eating disorder, you're spending a lot of time putting down and questioning cakes in the office, every six weeks. Especially changing what's actually happening to suit you?

Maybe reassess?

Well done on your weight loss, but please assume that others are able to deal with their weight and food choices?

Noyesnoyes · 27/03/2024 11:22

@TorringtonDean you're asking if the minority views count? Yes, but not as much as the majority,

Majority rules!

Of course you can answer on behalf of the OP, I'm sure the OP appreciates that.

Noyesnoyes · 27/03/2024 11:25

@Waitingforgeorge exactly! She's busy baking!

It was a very hypothetical question though?

What did make you ask it?

Waitingforgeorge · 27/03/2024 11:27

Noyesnoyes · 27/03/2024 11:01

Honestly, you've got an eating disorder and far too involved in others business. Please do accept that not everyone is like you? It's unhealthy and you're absolutely obsessed with cake in an office every six weeks.

Look at the posts you've made the way you've changed what's actually happening, your words.

Force feeding
Foisting
Temptation
The devil?
Constant

You've changed the OP to suit your narrative, so many times you're embarrassing yourself.

I'm not sure it's ok to accuse someone of having an eating disorder - it's actually quite offensive to use a mental health disorder as an insult.

Noyesnoyes · 27/03/2024 11:30

@Waitingforgeorge I merely trying to alert @TorringtonDean that the way she is acting, is looking like her controlling of other people's eating, changing the Od post, using emotive language like force feeding (which is accusing someone of something awful), is really looking like something is going on

Sorry, it's not normal behaviour IMO?

It's really quite concerning and not an insult. But needs to be thought about,

prettybird · 27/03/2024 11:35

I very much get the impression that TorringtonDean is projecting her own issues with food Hmm

Either that, or she is one of the two complainers Wink

Although I would suggest that we stop engaging with her as she’s right and we’re all wrong and she’ll keep finding the time to come back and tell us so Hmm (despite working in a place where everyone is so over-worked that even in their “free time” they couldn’t possibly ever have the time to bake Confused)

@Bibblybumblebee - I’m glad that your manager and HR are supportive Smile I hope they enjoy your latest batch of home cooking Grin

In my case, I follow a High Fat Low Carb Way of Eating and successfully lost 3 stone doing so , from my highest weight about 7 years ago (although I’d still like to lose another stone) so normally wouldn’t eat cake. But if I were in your workplace and it’s only 6 weeks or so and if it is a particular cake I like, I might choose to have a small piece.

I also enjoy baking and it’s a good way to relax. I can quite happily make tablet, mince pies, chocolate chip cookies, very good sourdough bread etc and give them away. In fact, I’m just about to make a batch of sourdough hot cross buns to give a couple to a very slim friend I’m seeing on Friday (along with a loaf of sourdough as she was most put out that I hadn’t made her one when I last saw her in January Grin)

You used it like an insult - if your intention was concern you need to reconsider how you communicate.

Noyesnoyes · 27/03/2024 11:47

@Waitingforgeorge thank you so much for your directive!

I'm mostly surprised that you feel that @TorringtonDean's way of communicating (the projection, and actual lying) is not concerning? But I suppose you've got the same view that she has, so you're siding with her?

Please can you explain what tablet is, ive heard it mentioned and am concerned it might be something nice I might be missing out on!!

My take on it is that the “miserable cows” (fellow employees who have expressed a wish to not have cake in the office) have a LOT of willpower. They are slim and eat sensibly but have asked not to be tempted.

The rest of you appear to have no willpower and brag about scoffing a big slice of cake in front of them, upping the baking deliveries etc. Sounds a really unpleasant environment. Can’t you just keep your eating habits to yourselves?

As for the passive smoking analogy, OK, you can’t inhale calories, but it is unfair to ignore your colleagues’ wishes for a healthier environment. It’s unpleasant to flaunt your sugary treats in front of those trying to control their weight. And those colleagues who end up with diabetes or heart disease from the office cake will be clogging up the NHS when you inevitably need its services. Every action has consequences.

So by the same token all shops should be stripped of UPF and high sugar/fat foods? They should be in grey scale packaging behind a screen where you have to ask for it?

The homemade cakes every few weeks are really not the problem here.

TorringtonDean · 27/03/2024 11:51

@Noyesnoyes you seem to have plenty of time to post on here too. I don’t work regular hours and I don’t waste time baking! And, yes, you did use a mental health condition as an insult. I haven’t lied either.

Are you one of the two anti- cake workers/ jobsworths at OP’s office ?

What is the big deal about bringing baked goods once in a while ?
It’s not as if they’re being forced to take part.

They just need to mind their own business and not impose their views on others, don’t they ?

They are not being excluded. They choose to exclude themselves.

Please remember, happy workers are productive workers ! Cake now and again makes happy workers.

"Waste time baking" GrinGrinGrin Why does it make you angry how others spend their time? Why does it bother you? Is it wasting time? Is it any worse than posting on MN, telling everyone they're wrong?

Don't worry about my posting, I'm fine, you worry about you!

You've changed what's been quoted in the OP a number of times?

If not lying, then changing the truth, is that better?

TorringtonDean · 27/03/2024 12:07

@Noyesnoyes OK let me spell it out. You are a bully and you used a mental health condition as an insult.

I’m debating on MumsNet. I’m not controlling what others eat. I do wonder why you are so wedded to people stuffing cakes in the office?

Waste time baking…….

Its quite restful. Guess this is why Bake-off is so popular.

TorringtonDean · 27/03/2024 12:11

Actually it’s all become a bit of a pile-on from the bullies, hasn’t it? All over cake? You must be projecting too!

It's not a pile on, it's people saying you're projecting your issues!

Which you seem to agree with now.

StarlightLime · 27/03/2024 12:31

The nerve of you claiming it's a pile on, @TorringtonDean 😬

After your posts!
