Bringing baked goods into work

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:03

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

I think you sound lovely!

I loved it when people brought in cakes / bakes etc
Equally I loved it when I took things in that I'd made and people said it was nice or they enjoyed it

If them 2 don't want your yummy baked things; then they can be adults and exercise their right to not stuff it in their face .... I however, would shovel it in my face and say thank you whilst I was doing so!

Ignore them and carry on. Your superior even asked for a cake so I think that's your answer there! Most people are happy and loving your bakes

Sorry, but not having their way 3% of the time is an issue?

I have taken the liberty of creating a little pie chart based on the 1 day in 6 weeks (30 working days) frequency mentioned by the OP. Perhaps the visual will help you understand that on balance these colleagues have no cake concerns 97% of the time.

Why did you have to use a pie chart? I CAN'T EAT PIE!

It's not your fault the miserable cows have no willpower. Personally I would step up the baking to once a week.

I like this attitude, it’s a lovely thing to do and I bet most people really appreciate it! You are not selling your baking so no need to worry about hygiene rating, everyone has choice to eat it! Just make sure if you catch either of the pair eating any to point out they could become seriously ill! 🙄

Do you need a hygiene certificate to make a pie chart?

Depends on whether you excel at making them...

yes, I work in an office and we don’t have time to waste on baking

That sounds a miserable place to work and you seem to be proud of it.And baking usually takes place outside an office,

and time spent on baking is clearly not wasted time!
I waste lots of time on MN (it doesn't really achieve anything!) but baking isn't a waste of time you get something nice to eat at the end of it! 😊

TorringtonDean · 27/03/2024 10:25

My take on it is that the “miserable cows” (fellow employees who have expressed a wish to not have cake in the office) have a LOT of willpower. They are slim and eat sensibly but have asked not to be tempted.

The rest of you appear to have no willpower and brag about scoffing a big slice of cake in front of them, upping the baking deliveries etc. Sounds a really unpleasant environment. Can’t you just keep your eating habits to yourselves?

As for the passive smoking analogy, OK, you can’t inhale calories, but it is unfair to ignore your colleagues’ wishes for a healthier environment. It’s unpleasant to flaunt your sugary treats in front of those trying to control their weight. And those colleagues who end up with diabetes or heart disease from the office cake will be clogging up the NHS when you inevitably need its services. Every action has consequences.

What do you do for fun? What a bundle of laughs.

A home made cake every six weeks isn’t going to cause diabetes or heart disease.

TorringtonDean · 27/03/2024 10:33

Actually the modern western diet does cause diabetes and heart disease. If you are eating cake in the office you are probably indulging on other occasions too. And I suspect the OP is not the only one bringing baked items in to work. I expect the place is awash with carbs.

I do love cake but I’ve tried to train myself to resist it as much as possible. There are very mixed messages here from people talking about willpower while also saying they are going to tuck in regardless and openly scoff in front of the colleagues who asked not to be tempted.

QuizNight · 27/03/2024 10:41

One of my lovely colleagues brings in packs of chocolate biscuits every week (multipacks of Twix fingers, Tunnocks Caramel Wafers etc). They are put on the table in sight of my desk so I have to have willpower all day to not eat them. I wouldn’t ask her not to bring them in but I do sometimes wish she wouldn’t. There’s only three of us and our other colleague doesn’t really eat chocolate so I’d rather she just put them in her desk drawer but she announces them each week and says they are to share. Sometimes there’s 3 packs piling up as no one is eating them (she doesn’t really eat much herself) but as soon as one is finished a new pack is brought in. There’s never a day without any.

I do occasionally break down and have a biscuit every so often (I’m only human!) but then regret it as it’s surely encouraging her to bring more in.

WonderfulSkye · 27/03/2024 10:45

Just put a note on the next ones stating ‘not to be consumed by x and y’ then they can’t complain they’re worried about not being good as they’re not invited to eat them 🤣🤣🤣

TorringtonDean · 27/03/2024 10:48

@QuizNight exactly. It’s a temptation most of us could do without. If she doesn’t eat much chocolate herself she probably has no idea how much of a battle it is for others to ignore the temptation all day long. It would be kinder for her to not bring in the biscuits.

TorringtonDean · 27/03/2024 10:50

There is a reason temptation is associated with the Devil!

Fizbosshoes · 27/03/2024 10:56

OP bringing in cakes to the office might be inviting temptation in the office 8 or 9 times a year (thry do not mention anyone else bringing cakes)
but how on earth are they influencing anyone's eating habits elsewhere during the other 93% of time (if we say the office cakes are available Mon-wed) that they haven't provided cake?? Confused

If I go into patisserie Valerie and buy a slice of gateau, my first thought isn't to blame OP for bringing a cherry bakewell traybake into the office 4 weeks ago!!

What a very hypocritical question!

What's your point?

Have you name changed OP?

Honestly, you've got an eating disorder and far too involved in others business. Please do accept that not everyone is like you? It's unhealthy and you're absolutely obsessed with cake in an office every six weeks.

Look at the posts you've made the way you've changed what's actually happening, your words.

Force feeding
Foisting
Temptation
The devil?
Constant

You've changed the OP to suit your narrative, so many times you're embarrassing yourself.

You implied that eating cakes caused the NHS problems. Like eating these cakes once every 6 weeks

If you are eating cake in the office you are probably indulging on other occasions too

Indeed but life is for living after all.

Noyesnoyes · 27/03/2024 11:02

@Waitingforgeorge no that's me!

Im not OP!

Although I mean hypothetical not hypocritical GrinGrinGrin

Blueink · 27/03/2024 11:03

It’s not like you are taking them every day and if it’s only every 6 weeks that’s pretty infrequent and isn’t going to disrupt anyone’s healthy eating

If they had a genuine concern about hygiene that is mutually exclusive to ‘trying to be good’ so proves it’s sour grapes.

Fair enough - it's just that I asked the OP a question and you answered like I was asking you,
