Bringing baked goods into work

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:03

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

@WickedSerious he is watching me, but I've bribed him with a bit of simnel cake! So we're all good now!

Don't offer any to the two who don't want them Say I've brought in cake for x,y,z.. please help yourselves these are not for p and q who are on a diet (just so you're not tempted, as an aside to them).

@Noyesnoyes No YOU are projecting! Totally addicted to cake, eh?

Yeah I'm stuffing and force feeding cake constantly!

It's a curse, I have to bear!

There are worse things though ..........

Noyesnoyes · 27/03/2024 11:47

@Waitingforgeorge thank you so much for your directive!

I'm mostly surprised that you feel that @TorringtonDean's way of communicating (the projection, and actual lying) is not concerning? But I suppose you've got the same view that she has, so you're siding with her?

I have no interest in siding with anyone - it’s dull playground behaviour - enjoy your bun fight.

Noyesnoyes · 27/03/2024 12:57

@Waitingforgeorge did you mean hot cross bun fight or iced bun fight?

Whether YABU depends on the bigger picture. If you’re one of a couple of people baking every few weeks, and your cakes are lovely, then they ABU and need to take responsibility for their own diets. If several people are doing it, and you’re being very pushy about it, so that your colleagues have to either stuff themselves with crap they don’t want on a regular basis, then you need to take it on board that a lovely gesture isn’t lovely if it involves coercion and guilt tripping.

@Fizbosshoes - tablet is a Scottish sweet that is almost pure sugar: a tin of condensed milk, 2lb caster sugar, 1/4lb butter, 1 cup milk Shock

The technique for making it results in a sort of cross between fudge and toffee: think of it like a crisp fudge or a melt-in-the-mouth toffee. It’s difficult to make consistently (takes a long time standing stirring over the stove and you only find out if it’s a good batch after it has set), which is something I’ve mastered Grin

I now make it without having a single piece myself (because I can’t have a single piece Blush) I most often make it for friends as gifts or for cake stalls at the rugby club for fund raising and it is always very popular Smile

Thank you, it sounds great, I think I'll need to try it. Maybe I'll have to ask my Scottish friends if they ever make it so I can try a single piece!

(My favourite thing to make is millionaire shortbread, but that can be dangerous too - I make it for races or events when I can give some away!)

@Fizbosshoes I have to admit cherry bakewells are not tempting! Not a favourite of mine.

But are you not familiar with the idea of people relapsing when they have made a big effort to give up bad habits? If you are an alcoholic one small drink can lead you back to big-time addiction. Same if you are a sugar addict.

I don’t have an eating disorder. I am overweight but I have fought very hard against it and I am very careful with what I eat. If I let myself have a treat or two that can lead to an avalanche. I can’t believe I am the only person like that! I have bucketloads of willpower but there are times when I can weaken.

Maybe these colleagues are also like that and just don’t need the temptation. It’s a workplace. Don’t their views count?

The thing is, the colleagues haven't taken Op to one side and said look we struggle with our weight and we're finding it a challenging situation. They've told her she needs a food hygiene certificate and they're going to HR. There's a difference

Noyesnoyes · 27/03/2024 15:46

Wow! Didn’t expect such a huge response. I’ve read every one and thank you for sharing your opinions.

Funny thing is it’s probably me that should be on a diet - I’m a size 18- I don’t love my body but I’m very grateful for my body.

These two ladies are so slim!

Ive spoken to my manager. He’s rolled his eyes and told me I’d get a disciplinary if I stopped baking 🤭
He told me I didn’t need a health and safety certificate.

I also called the HR office and the guy there said it was fine as long as once in a while I took some up to their office as well. I’m baking the a cherry Bakewell tray bake for tomorrow 😋

Fabulous update! Glad everyone in your workplace (barring the 2 complainers) can continue to enjoy your baking🍰

Too bad there isn't someone like you in every workplace, you're very kind💐

Spoonthief · 27/03/2024 16:03

Great update OP.
Every office needs someone like you !

You contribute to a happy work environment😁

MrsLighthouse · 27/03/2024 16:41

Oh god l work at a busy station and everyone LOVES it when our “resident baker” brings in cakes ! It really lifts morale. Maybe check with the manager but please keep doing it . It’s a lovely thing to do. Perhaps say you’ll cover them with tin foil etc so the dieters can practice being adults and just walking past !

TorringtonDean · 27/03/2024 17:20

@twohotwaterbottles if you look at the first post the two co-workers did take her to one side and asked her to stop doing it. But it was when she took no notice they said they might have to go to HR. I would think it is reasonable to listen to the opinions of workmates. Even if it’s a minority.

@Hoglet70 you were straight in on the first page of this thread calling the co-workers “miserable cows”. Must be pretty bovine yourself!

At the risk of eating myself, OP took notice went to her manager and HR..... )she didn't bribe HR)

And decided majority rule!

HR agreed
Manager agreed

It's all good!

The minority were overruled

TorringtonDean: My preference at work is that we all stay off our phones and lap tops in meetings. M in the minority. Should everyone pander to my preference too?

Where I worked it wasn't a preference it was a rule, no phones or laptops (exception made for those doing a presentation that needed their laptop). It was considered extremely disrespectful.

Yaaaaay!!! 🤩🤩🤩

Fizbosshoes · 27/03/2024 21:07

My DD is in year 13 at school, they have a "cake Friday" rota where someone in their form brings cake each week. The boys especially are very enthusiastic about it apparently!
