Bringing baked goods into work

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:03

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

People have to stop eating so much sugary shit - even homemade sugary shit, nd they'll find it hard and we as a society, need to find ways to make it less hard because what we are doing at the moment isn't working - people are getting fatter and fatter and eating cake at work is part of it - it might not be all of it but it's not helping. Maybe the OP should consider another hobby -volunteering to cook for the homeless?

If you read up about UPF, it’s not homemade stuff that does the damage. You’d be surprised.

Imisssleep2 · 26/03/2024 13:48

What a pair of miserable b
A certificate is only applicable if selling the cakes. They aren't saying your home is unclean, they are just trying to frighten you into not doing it.
Home made goodies are always welcome in my office and disappear very quickly, if people are being good it's down to them to have some Will power.

Carry on as you are and if they say something just say let's ask the rest of the team, and they go to HR I would imagine they will get told to grow up

The OP enjoys their hobby, again nobody is force feeding anyone cake!

Also cooking isn't the same hobby as baking. I love to cook, I hate baking as I'm inpatient and don't follow recipes.

Everything should be in moderation and its up to individuals to make those choices. For instance I'm losing weight so I bought myself a very dark chocolate easter egg as I know I will only want a small piece at a time. My children did an Easter egg hunt but again they are given chocolate in moderation so it's neither a treat or reward.

Penalising, taxing or banning doesn't work. Educating, understanding calories/energy requirements and moderation does. Its why so many diets fail as they are not long term sustainable.

So now you know so many diets fail as they are not long-term sustainable, you'll be successful long term Easy. Lucky you for uncovering the secret - you should share your knowledge, you could make a fortune - you could save the NHS a fortune. Educating, understanding calories/energy requirements and moderation. Brilliant! You won't need my good wishes but I'll send them anyway.

Mimimimi1234 · 26/03/2024 14:15

Utterly ridiculous. I would do a poll of my team, asking who does or doesnt want you to still bring baked goods in and mentioning that you dont want to cause upset so will go with the majority vote. I would also check with hr yourself, just ask them. If you get yes from hr and yes from the team then crack on. If hr say you will get fired for bringing in a cupcake and your team all beg you to stop then maybe she had a point, but this will be doubtful and I suspect you will win this ridiculous battle.

Anonymous2025 · 26/03/2024 15:12

Op I remembered you today , not even home baked but we had a double birthday where there were 2 giant Costco cakes one chocolate the other the white sponge , where only 1/3 ( if that ) was eaten from each . Hubby took the rest to work today , just told me most was fine after the first break and the night shift will probably finish the rest . Please ignore the bad replies and carry on baking . Life is short and goes by fast, enjoy it .

It's not me that's come up with that it's known by pretty much everyone and I even think there was a NHS add campaign a few years ago on it!

Thanks I'm 2.5 stone down since end of November 10lbs to my target of mid weight range for my height then will use my fitbit daily calories log to maintain.

"We don't want the nice things, so no-one else can have them either".

Ugh. Miserable cows.

Holilollybobs · 26/03/2024 17:56

Crikey, my whole office would be in trouble if HR had to deal with individuals baking for each other. We have baking and cooking competitions on a regular basis. The company provide fruit baskets for our mess rooms as part of our well being programme so maybe you could suggest the company invest in something like that to give them something to suck on instead of their own misery.

twohotwaterbottles · 26/03/2024 17:58

Utter fun sponges. Totally and utterly ignore the miseries. You sound fab. I love taking home made stuff in to work and my colleagues love it too.

twohotwaterbottles · 26/03/2024 18:04

Bluepetergarden · 22/03/2024 17:14

Tell them to fuck off (whilst eating a massive slice of cake)

Succinct, and spot on ☺️

PearlyShamps · 26/03/2024 18:18

She sounds utterly ridiculous! I would continue to bring in home baked cakes. I think your only obligation is to be mindful of allergies.

TeamPineapple · 26/03/2024 18:21

Scottishskifun · 25/03/2024 20:15

@myladybelle a lot of the reason people are overweight is because they underestimate calories from things (drinks included), portion sizes (especially with things like cereals, pizza etc) and think it's an automatic 2000 calories a day for women when it's not. Barely anyone can judge a 30g portion by eye and if you have a tracker it becomes eye opening (I rarely go above 1600 calories burnt due to my job). For me to lose weight I need to be a max 1200 calories a day. Everything should be in moderation as well.

If you pay attention to what your having and don't have mindless calories out of habit then it's pretty straightforward.

Unfortunately it isn't straightforward, which is why obesity is so difficult to avoid for so many. See this obesity system map for how complex the issue is:

Mrsgus · 26/03/2024 18:26

You aren't selling them for profit so no need for a hygiene rating. Just take them in a few salad leaves to nibble on while you all sit there enjoying your yummy cakes!!

Spoonthief · 26/03/2024 18:29

Ignore them and enjoy sharing your delicious cakes.
These 2 obviously have issues with food.
Nobody is stopping them from “being good”
All they need to do is take responsibility for themselves and mind their own business.

They can’t report you for not having a food hygiene certificate. You don’t need one unless it’s your business.
They're trying to intimidate you.

Carry on regardless.
Maybe bring extra cakes next time, and offer them some !

Cazlovesfood · 26/03/2024 18:34

What about making some protein rich egg breakfast muffins from Slimming World. Protein rich to sustain them till lunchtime. Worth a shot.. I’m gluten and lactose intolerant and my work colleagues bring in all sorts of baked goods that I can’t eat. Does it bother me. No!!! They are jobsworths. Pointless people!!!

StressedOutButProudMama · 26/03/2024 18:41

Like someone else mentioned I'd take it up with manager and or HR and ask what their stance is, explain you've always done it, nobody was sick and that it's just been mentioned lately due to two individuals who are dieting.

StressedOutButProudMama · 26/03/2024 18:46

Also as someone who has worked in catering, Food Hygiene is only needed if you are catering specifically for the firm or are selling your cakes on a regular basis, hence why your allowed to sell cakes at a school fayre without food hygiene certificates, it's the staffs choice to eat it's not a meal provided by the firm that they pay for or or are expecting. It's a gift. I wouldn't worry and.if they say owt else just tell them you've spoken to HR and they are fine with it, but I would speak to them to get confirmation and make it clear that it's only been brought up by these two individuals who are dieting. If they've eaten them before and now aren't make sure you mention that.

Waitingforgeorge · 26/03/2024 18:46

OP - how would you feel if no one ate your cake? If it had to go in the bin, would you honestly just shrug and not care - or would you feel rejected and upset and go home and have a wee cry to yourself?

This NEVER happened where l worked. It barely lasted until lunch time.

Snd if there was any left people would take it home.

What a very hypocritical question!

They are very well received!

What's your point?

MuggedByReality · 26/03/2024 18:56

There is nothing more irritating than female office workers whingeing about the size of their arses while literally stuffing their faces with cake & wittering on like morons about ‘being good’. 🙄

Ignore the cretins & keep baking, OP.

You don’t need a hygiene cert for giving food to colleagues. Tell the moron colleagues to not eat it. Simple. Problem solved.

Only female office workers???

Yes. In my experience men don’t behave in that irritating fashion. They just take the cake or leave it.
