Bringing baked goods into work

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:03

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

I only bring in cakes every now and then definitely not every week. I was going to bring Easter biscuits in next week.

My manager always helps himself and has even requested a particular cake.

I just was so worried I would get in trouble.
These two woman are normally ok. When I came in with some cake last one said ‘oh here comes Betty Crocker’. I laughed but now thinking it was said in an unkind manner 🙁

No-ones forcing them, they are bvu

BananaBender · 22/03/2024 17:19

Tell them that you’d prefer to be called Nigella or Delia or whoever you like. Bullying bitches.

GHSP · 22/03/2024 17:19

I don’t really enjoy working with feeders. If you enjoy bringing it in then whatever, but if you make a show of it and nag others to eat your stuff then I can see why it might not be welcome.

It’s just left on the staff room table.
I promise I don’t go in and announce it.
I don’t even care if people don’t have any.

Ridiculous. It's their responsibility to choose what they do and don't eat. Yes, dieting is hard, but that's not your problem. It's not like the whole world and every food shop or café they go in isn't full of stuff to tempt them. If they can deal with that, then I don't see why you can't bring cakes in. Hygiene certificate Hmm

ItsFuckingBoringFeedingEveryoneUntilYouDie · 22/03/2024 17:22

Nobody is forcing them to put cake in their mouths. Their lack of self restraint shouldn't mean others have to go without, as long as you enjoy it.

K0OLA1D · 22/03/2024 17:23

I love it when people bring in their homemade goodies!

How lovely of you!

Citrusandginger · 22/03/2024 17:24

Mad & miserable. Crack on OP - you know who your friends are.

Raccaccoonie · 22/03/2024 17:25

Every single workplace I've been in, people bring stuff in and then send an email/chat just saying 'chocolate cake in the kitchen, help yourself' maybe labelling any allergens, and that's it.

I've literally never seen anyone make a fuss about eating it, not eating it, wanting others to eat it, not wanting others to eat it - I can't imagine working in such a place but just bringing and notifying it is totally fine so people have the chance to eat or not eat.

If they can't cope being in the same building as a cake then they have serious problems, and it's them being inappropriate in asking others to accommodate their lack of willpower/imagination/whatever it is that's even supposedly the problem.

concernedchild · 22/03/2024 17:26

They're chatting rubbish.

If they're "being good" they can avoid the baked goods. You're not selling them so you can't be sued if someone gets sick

ThirstyMeeples · 22/03/2024 17:27

I think it's amazing you do this. I have a pretty stressful job and occasionally someone will homebake something. It makes the day so much brighter for me. Not just the cake itself but the thought that has gone into it. Don't stop as I bet there are so many people that love it and it will make a difference to them

hoonicorn · 22/03/2024 17:28

Call your next cake a "Fun Sponge" and tell them you made it just for them.

Remind them that no one is forcing the cake down their throats.

The complainers would be very unpopular at my work, we love it when someone’s been baking!

Agreed ! apart from there would be absolutely no complainers at my work.

Tagyoureit · 22/03/2024 17:29

I'd be baking the biggest, fattest, richest, over indulgent chocolate cake next week just to be an arsehole!

Don't let these misery guts ruin your nice gesture!

ZeldaFighter · 22/03/2024 17:29

I'm early '50s and now relentlessly dieting. I applaud you being creative, talented and generous enough to bring in cakes for your colleagues. I would not be bothered at all, I can have nice things again when I've got to my goal weight and I'd love your cakes then 😋

Thisilldo · 22/03/2024 17:29

I would have laughed as I walked away. Let her crack on. It will give HR a good laugh and you don’t need a hygiene certificate. You’re not selling them.

I would report her to HR for harassment and put your cake baking to a vote of your whole team.

LightSwerve · 22/03/2024 17:29

I'd ask your manager to clarify it with them. What a pair of miseries.

I very rarely eat food baked by colleagues personally but they are out of order IMO.

LittleGreenDragons · 22/03/2024 17:30

I think I need to see these recipes before I could possibly comment. Lemon drizzle did you say??

< drools >

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 22/03/2024 17:30

People are always bringing cakes and stuff into my office. It's up to me to resist it when I'm 'being good'. I head up our hr team - I wouldn't have much truck with such a complaint!

Bubobubo · 22/03/2024 17:30

I love baking for my workplace, I enjoy baking but it would get eaten quickly between me and my son.

I haven't baked recently as it's Ramadan. But it will be resuming mid April.

I also include nut allergies, coeliacs and lactose intolerance. I haven't managed vegan bakes yet.

ilovepixie · 22/03/2024 17:31

A woman at my work brings in home made cakes, it's always appreciated. I'd ask the rest of the team what they think.

MississippiAF · 22/03/2024 17:31

‘It’s not my problem you can’t control yourself’

Walk off

FlyingDuck5 · 22/03/2024 17:31

Don’t stop! The secret baking talents of my office colleagues is one of the things I miss most about office life!

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/03/2024 17:32

Cake? Around until Wednesday?

Sorry, I don't understand...
