Bringing baked goods into work

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

Ask the rest of your team. I imagine they'll tell her where to go.

I take cakes in frequently, they're gone in a day.

I'd go to my manager and ask for clarification.

And whatever the manager said I'd go along with, but then I'd give these 2 troublemakers a wide berth from here on in.

Pair of miseries.

You can come and work with me if you want.

I think its lovely that you are kind enough to share..... they just need to ignore the delicious treats 😁

Every week and I could see that might be a bit annoying for people with little willpower, but every six weeks sounds lovely.

Either ignore or suggest they take their concerns to HR.

You won't get into trouble, you may be asked to stop, but I doubt it.

Fwiw, I do think companies who go on about staff wellbeing and then have cakes and biscuits in every meeting are a bit much, but I think a colleague bringing in something homemade now and again is nice.

It's not your fault the miserable cows have no willpower. Personally I would step up the baking to once a week.

You don’t need a hygiene certificate unless you are selling the cakes

Am a teacher - someone is always baking stuff and it is gone in a matter of minutes. People can always say no and use some willpower!!

I would have thought unless you're selling then the hygiene rating is irrelevant 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm assuming you're not force feeding them the cakes, so if they don't want to eat them they don't have to.

Much rather have some yummy home made cakes than some of the ultra processed stuff that can be bought 🤢

On a side note can I work with you 🤤

I work from home now in a different job and oh man do I miss my ex colleague's baking! As someone said clarify with the manager that it's not an issue then keep bringing the joy. Their lack of self control is not your problem.

Personal responsibility is a thing. They don't have to eat cake.

The complainers would be very unpopular at my work, we love it when someone’s been baking!

Jesus what a bunch of joy sponges. I would leave a company full of such joyless people.

I'm petty enough that I'd email HR with bitchy dieting woman CCd in saying

Hi HR

Bitchy woman has been kind enough to point out to me that I may need a food hygiene certificate to bring in home baked goods, just wondering if you could clarify if that is the case.

Kind regards

I wouldn't mention the grievance bit at this stage as I strongly suspect the answer to pull get from HR is that no you don't and how nice it is that you being in baked goods and care enough to ask.

I have a colleague who bakes something yummy for every staff meeting and I'd be gutted if someone stopped her from doing it! So please speak to your manager (who is hopefully one of the people who enjoys your baking) and then carry on as usual.

Miserable buggers. Bring on the cake.

No food is good or bad, especially every six weeks.

I would take in cake plus a bag of apples for those being “good”.

We did actually lose a load of midwives once who been to a wedding and the person who made the cake was a relative of the bride/groom but they had norovirus when making it. Lots of our midwives then went down with it… but that’s unusual.

I'd be sorely tempted.

They'll report you to HR for not having a hygiene certificate? You are not a food business, lol.
How do they know you haven't got level 2 hygiene and food safety? It's a 4 hour course.
I'd say just bring the stuff in and rather than leaving it out just offer one piece wrapped in a tissue/ foil to those who want it? You could make a bit of a joke and just email the people who like your cakes and give them it at lunch when the others are in the gym or staring at a salad. Haha.
The other 2 can't police what others eat, though if it genuinely upsets them then just be more subtle. If it's gonna have to get serious, just give the cakes outside the office building. Seems extreme but don't deprive people of your lovely bakes!

Absolutely this!

Ignore them and do what makes you happy. Clarify with management I ot puts your mind at ease.

But, it's their problem. They are adults and can decide whether or not they have some.

It's most likely they are just jealous, that you are probably getting praise and appreciation from the rest of the team and they aren't.

Tell them to fuck off (whilst eating a massive slice of cake)

Take some celery stalks when you next take in cake and give the two whingers the celery. They go and eat that and be “good” while the rest of you enjoy cake.

Just to say, how very kind of you to bring home baked cake to your workplace!
