Bringing baked goods into work

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:03

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

We have a lovely young woman who very occasionally will bring something home baked (not often enough) the last time our manager asked her to make some for her mum. She did. Carry on baking op.

FloofyBird · 22/03/2024 17:33

They sound jealous. It's hardly your fault Mavis and Maureen have no willpower either.

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/03/2024 17:32

Cake? Around until Wednesday?

Sorry, I don't understand...

Yeah it wouldn't last long enough for someone to say "hygiene certificate" in my place
I made 120 biscuits one day and they vanished within an hour

whatatool · 22/03/2024 17:34

She's a fun sponge

Keep baking, she's an adult capable of saying no thanks.

Scottishskifun · 22/03/2024 17:34

The requirement for food hygiene certificate is if your selling baked goods or working in a bakery/restaurant etc not for bringing in cakes to an office!

If you want speak to your manager but I would just shrug and say you don't have to eat it but I'm not going to stop baking. Just like offices have a biscuit tin usually!

I'm gluten free and would have zero issue with it even though I couldn't eat it of it makes you feel better.

Prinnny · 22/03/2024 17:35

God what miserable bitches! I would have an informal chat with your manager and as long as she has no problem with it then continue to spread joy and happiness through sweet treats!

BlackberrySky · 22/03/2024 17:35

Oh God I hate it when people try and make others take responsibility for their personal food choices. Miserable cows. Personally I tend to avoid cakes because they make me put on weight, but I still enjoy the community bonding when someone brings in cakes. It's up to me to decline eating them while others enjoy.

LuckyPeonies · 22/03/2024 17:36

Speak to your manager. Just because the two miseries don’t have any self-control is no reason to deprive everyone else.

Usernamesarenoteasy · 22/03/2024 17:36

I remember once working somewhere, the boss bought a load of dominos pizza for the team to say thank you.
One team member stomped and shouted about how unfair it was, she was trying to be healthy, how dare he buy dominos for everyone.... and then proceeded to eat 6 slices of pizza.

Honestly, if these two women can't control themselves once every six weeks when there is cake present, that's their issue, not yours.

It's a lovely thing to do, you carry on!

Misthios · 22/03/2024 17:39

She is clearly one of those performative dainty eaters - ooooh a WHOLE slice of cake? Who could eat THAT MUCH??? Come on Audrey, half it with me, if I eat ALL of it, I won't eat for a month! She is performing her daintiness to you by saying that rather than it being her fault for not just saying "no thanks, I'll pass", it's your fault for putting temptation in her way and thus causing her to perform her "goodness" by making a fuss about not eating it.

All the hygiene stuff is just ridiculous. There are some people who eschew homemade because of germs but they tend to do it quietly rather than making a fuss and going to HR. I would imagine HR have better things to do. Food hygiene certificates do not apply when cooking for friends, for no financial gain.

I hope @Bibblybumblebee you told her to get a grip. And if there is any lemon drizzle going, where do you work?

PandaCwtch · 22/03/2024 17:39

This is just an example of miserable sods wanting to spread misery around.

Whatwouldnanado · 22/03/2024 17:40

We have a rota for home baking on a Friday, anyone can partake and it’s good fun. Bring a bag of satsumas in for the miseries.

Saymyname28 · 22/03/2024 17:41

I would love to work with you!

I'd send a group email round your colleagues and ask if everyone is really feeling that way about you bringing in cakes. The cows are trying to ruin a good thing for everyone becuase they're jealous.

You bringing cake in every so often is not the reason they're failing their diets.

Herdinggoats · 22/03/2024 17:46

I think it sounds lovely. There are definitely certain people at work who I suspect have manky kitchens, so I just give their efforts the swerve. Do they also complain that a supermarket has a bakery counter?

Lurkingandlearning · 22/03/2024 17:50

Pretty sure you only need to be regulated by the council if you are selling food, not if you are generously sharing your own food with your colleagues.

Ask her if the gym she goes to has any equipment to tone up her willpower so she won’t feel so threatened by your cakes.

Or maybe just say, “Don’t give my cakes another thought because I am not allowing you to have any.”

lap90 · 22/03/2024 17:51

That's completely ridiculous. I'd love to be in your team!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/03/2024 17:52

ItsFuckingBoringFeedingEveryoneUntilYouDie · 22/03/2024 17:22

Nobody is forcing them to put cake in their mouths. Their lack of self restraint shouldn't mean others have to go without, as long as you enjoy it.

This - although for them it's probably much more fun to blame someone else Hmm

Back when I worked for others we had a lady who used to bring in homemade asian treats - I can taste them still!!

Carry on being lovely, OP, and don't let others put you off ...

Myotheripodisayoto · 22/03/2024 17:52

They sound like miseries out to spoil others pleasure.

Its not your job to facilitate their restricted diet. I love a good slice of home made carrot cake! Its a good day at the office when someone's baked.

Bluepetergarden · 22/03/2024 17:52

Bake a few of these

Bringing baked goods into work
Sasqwatch · 22/03/2024 17:53

Cheeesus · 22/03/2024 17:07

Every week and I could see that might be a bit annoying for people with little willpower, but every six weeks sounds lovely.

That’s their problem, not the OP’s.

Isabelle70 · 22/03/2024 17:53

We have weekly free fruit in my office and if the bananas don't get eaten I normally take them home to bake banana bread which is always well received the following week.
Some people would give certain peoples baked goods a wide berth due to hygiene but that is there choice.

YourWinter · 22/03/2024 17:54

Massy · 22/03/2024 17:08

You don’t need a hygiene certificate unless you are selling the cakes

^THIS^

Your colleague is an idiot.

Take celery for the whingers.

Haydenn · 22/03/2024 17:54

This is one thing I miss with working from home. Nothing beats a homemade cake- delicious and can often try some things that are quite different from shop bought sadness. Easter biscuits sound “cracking” 🥚🐣

The diet is making them miserable.

24Seconds2Go · 22/03/2024 17:55

Miserable cunts

Love the idea of just taking their healthy fruit and caking it. I’d be hiding it so you had more to work with. “Oh look at all the apples left Isabelle, crumble on Monday?”
