Bringing baked goods into work

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:03

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

I would bet money on them not being super slim and healthy. I bet they eat plenty of cake in the privacy of their own homes but just like acting holier than thou in the work place.

OhGoodItsRainingAgain · 22/03/2024 19:02

"So because you have no will power, you want to spoil it for everyone else too? Nice." Then laugh and ignore.

WiddlinDiddlin · 22/03/2024 19:03

If only there were a way of alerting the rest of the office to the fact these two have appointed themselves the Food Police Official Fun Sponges...

Email to all:

'I have been informed by Susan and Betty that the cake I occasionally bake and bring in is proving too much of a temptation and unfair to those who struggle with self control. Therefore I'd like to take a vote on whether I stop bringing cake and start bringing Ryvitas and dust instead?'...

Or offer them a muzzle for the days you fetch in cake?

Meowandthen · 22/03/2024 19:03

Ignore the miserable cows. Next time you treat your colleagues to something you make put a big sign by it saying “Help yourselves everyone except Jean and Brenda”. 😎

Calamitousness · 22/03/2024 19:04

Put a notice up in staff room saying whi it is has asked you to stop bringing in cakes and does everyone else agree as you don’t want to make people feel they have to eat your baking. That should do it. The rest of the team will take those ladies to task for you. Keep on baking.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 22/03/2024 19:04

It would be good practice for you to write down the ingredients on a bit of paper in case of allergens , but a food safety cert?? They are batshit. They clearly have issues with food / self control.

I’d be tempted to first check in with HR on the quiet and get the official go ahead to bring in your bakes. I’d then email round the team and say that someone has complained about you bringing in cakes and you wanted to do a quick poll of whether people are keen for you to continue or not. If people are clever they will work out who complained and think they are batshit too 😂

KomodoOhno · 22/03/2024 19:04

I bet you will get far more then two complaints if you stop! It sounds delicious 😋

soupfiend · 22/03/2024 19:06

Really laughing at the OP, OP

Sorry as its upset you but those two colleagues of yours are idiots. Im sure others have already said all this but no of course you dont need a hygiene rating!! How funny

Also, if they are on diets, they can avoid your baked goods and leave more for others

I always warn people if I take stuff in 'watch out for the random cat hair'!

But then my colleagues are made of sterner stuff

MeridianB · 22/03/2024 19:06

Ignore the sour pair - they sound horrible. Threatening you with HR over hygiene is unbelievably low.

If they mention it again then definitely ask the whole team ‘Doris and Maureen have asked me to stop bringing cakes in - happy to stop if the majority prefer me not to’ Put them in the spotlight.

SwordBilledHummingbird · 22/03/2024 19:09

HR over cake? How ridiculous.

We have a weekly discussion group and it's in the rules that the chair brings cake! No-one is obliged to eat it and people often don't. People also randomly take in cake from time to time, myself included. It's a nice thing to do and if other people don't have the self-control to not eat it, that's their problem.

ThatSongAboutMe · 22/03/2024 19:09

Just ignore them. If she is ‘being good’ that's for her to control.

I can’t imagine HR being interested in this and I don’t believe she’s worried about you getting into trouble. She’s either just a weirdo or has an ED, neither of which are your problem.

Lovemycat2023 · 22/03/2024 19:11

We do the macmillan coffee morning at work. Some amazing home baked stuff. I could do without a biscuit tin being full all the time because I have no willpower but (a) that’s my problem and (b) lovely homemade stuff is different! Lemon drizzle cake is my favourite.

Sithi · 22/03/2024 19:12

What an absolute weirdo. In my first corporate graduate job I brought in a home made cake my then bf has made me for my bday. They loved it.

I work for a big company now. People always bring in sweets and treats and baked goods. There is always something on the end table! I think it creates a really nice atmosphere that people do that, like people care about each other.

Sithi · 22/03/2024 19:12

She’s probably jealous of you

Gowlett · 22/03/2024 19:13

When you’re dieting, you just have to say no.
Nice food will still be there. So they are wrong.

TerrysNeapolitan · 22/03/2024 19:14

Agree with other posters. What a pair of weapons grade miseries.

PreeningPopinjay · 22/03/2024 19:14

She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home.

What an absolute fanny she sounds.

I've been on a no-sugar kick recently so haven't been nibbling on any of the homebaking that my colleagues bring in. Because I'm a functioning adult who doesn't come asunder at the sight of a bun. How do twits like this cope in supermarkets or newsagents?

PossumintheHouse · 22/03/2024 19:15

Jesus Christ. If a pair of miserable twats tried this on with me, I'd be baking about 27 cakes for a special cake buffet day at my work. Fuck right off.

Sithi · 22/03/2024 19:16

Thepeopleversuswork · 22/03/2024 17:09

Jesus what a bunch of joy sponges. I would leave a company full of such joyless people.

Pun intended? 😉

TeenLifeMum · 22/03/2024 19:17

@fisherfighter but no normal person wants apples over cake. Work is bad enough without misery 😂

Noseybookworm · 22/03/2024 19:17

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:16

I only bring in cakes every now and then definitely not every week. I was going to bring Easter biscuits in next week.

My manager always helps himself and has even requested a particular cake.

I just was so worried I would get in trouble.
These two woman are normally ok. When I came in with some cake last one said ‘oh here comes Betty Crocker’. I laughed but now thinking it was said in an unkind manner 🙁

They sound miserable and jealous - I expect your other colleagues are very happy when you bring in cakes and they sing your praises! Just ignore them. No-one is forced to eat the cake!

VimtoVimto · 22/03/2024 19:18

I used to work with someone who made gorgeous cakes, which we all enjoyed. I saved my willpower for the constant supplies of biscuits .

SpringSprungALeak · 22/03/2024 19:19

@Bibblybumblebee

you do you.

some people will enjoy it, some people won't eat it, but like you say, you don't care & you don't push it on people.

it would add another layer of difficulty for me as I'm a diet controlled, miserable, very low carber who would be tasted by the baked items calling me.

BUT that's MY issue, not yours. I fully support your right to do it and others to enjoy it.

tell them to --fuck
off-- go to HR if they want to 🥺

I'm 'older' (55) too, but that doesn't give me or them the right to bully younger team members & to 'threaten' to take action.

im sure your manager will have your back! (He knows where his cake is iced.)

Pastachocolate · 22/03/2024 19:20

I need to lose weight but that’s my problem. Bring in the cakes OP.

mumda · 22/03/2024 19:21

'wi' standard is fine.

Do your free allergen training though!https://allergytraining.food.gov.uk/

Please come and work with me.
