Bringing baked goods into work

Bibblybumblebee · 22/03/2024 17:03

I really enjoy baking - I’m quite good - only thing I’m really any good at!
I like baking traditional cakes like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot.

I normally bake on the weekend and sometimes bake a tray bake cake and take it to work.
I work in a team of about 10 people. So there’s plenty for everyone to help themselves- it’s normally demolished by Wednesday.

2 woman I work with are always on a diet or talking about fitness - both in there late 50s.
One of them asked to have a word with me today and said her and this other woman both agree it’s not appropriate to bring in homemade cakes to work because it’s unhealthy and not fair when people are trying to be ‘good’.
She also said that if I could be reported to HR as I haven’t had a hygiene rating certificate at home. She said she’s worried if someone got sick from my homemade food I could get in trouble.

AIBU to feel a bit upset about this. My home is spotless my kitchen is clean.

I think these woman have just got food issues but I am worried they could report me.

I don’t bake cakes every week. Maybe once every 6 weeks.

Whats your opinion on people being in baked goods from home into work?

The complainers would be very unpopular at my work, we love it when someone’s been baking!

Same here! Three of us bake and bring in maybe once a fortnight. No one is ever pressurised - not everyone has some, and that’s fine.

You don’t need a hygiene cert if you’re not selling.

heatersneaker · 22/03/2024 18:37

I'd hate it if you regularly bring cakes in as it's a constant temptation - and it's been shown in studies that resisting temptation takes actual energy.

Of course I've worked in places where it happens and I never say anything / avoid the cake. But truthfully it's difficult and I just want to concentrate on my work

Time to go full Bruce Bogtrotter for the next cake!

mrsdineen2 · 22/03/2024 18:38

As a non-baker but avid cake eater, I just wanted to say thank you for your service OP!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 22/03/2024 18:40

We are keen cake makers where I work. People are appreciative, and those that don't want to eat cake just don't 🤷 I would ignore them, to be honest.

LlynTegid · 22/03/2024 18:41

Once every six weeks or so is hardly frequent. If it is in a staff room the smell is not there all the time someone is working.

I suppose if one or other of them has a particular time they are on holiday each year you could choose to bring them in then, but to be honest the 'it's not fair' comment would make me deliberately choose the opposite.

mrlistersgelfbride · 22/03/2024 18:42

You sound amazing and I'd love that! I love it when people bring in baked goods to work! I don't bake myself 😅
These women sound miserable.
If they can't control themselves around a few cakes every 6 weeks that's their problem.

sleepyscientist · 22/03/2024 18:42

Online level 2 food hygiene is £14 I would do it for the pure fun of handing it to them when they complain. On a serious note you don't need it as you're not cooking for profit, DH often makes food for people at work without issue.

Justlovedogs · 22/03/2024 18:44

This came up in the news a couple of months or so back. Madness
As someone who is trying to be good and not eat too much cake etc., I couldn't care less if someone brings in cake, homemade or bought. It's on me not to eat it, not them to control my calorie intake. And as others have said, as long as you're not selling, a hygiene cert is not needed.

Hedonism · 22/03/2024 18:46

Hahahaha, what a pair of knobs 😂

How embarrassing for them.

JoJothegerbil · 22/03/2024 18:49

They could just say no to cake. Nobody is forcing them to eat it. Fun sponges the pair of them.

littlebopeepp234 · 22/03/2024 18:52

I can’t believe what I have just read op! What a pair of sad fucks they must both be if they have to bring up the crap about hygiene rating! You’re not running a business. I work in an environment where people have always brought in goodies - either bought from a shop or baked at home. We always appreciate the food that others have been kind enough to bring to work and share with us! If any of us are trying to be ‘good’ because we are on a diet, we just choose not to eat the food, simple. But nobody would ever say such a shit thing as your colleagues have - that’s like throwing kindness back in someone’s face. I honestly cannot believe they even brought up going to HR because of the hygeine situation! Wow thank god I work where I do because anyone saying such shit to someone that has been kind enough to bake food to bring to work, they would literally be sneered at and talked about and basically told to get a grip!

Larasbra · 22/03/2024 18:52

What a pair of miseries. Maybe they need to study a course in self control.

fisherfighter · 22/03/2024 18:54

TeenLifeMum · 22/03/2024 17:12

I would take in cake plus a bag of apples for those being “good”.

We did actually lose a load of midwives once who been to a wedding and the person who made the cake was a relative of the bride/groom but they had norovirus when making it. Lots of our midwives then went down with it… but that’s unusual.

Or they could bring apples for everyone.

Allwelcone · 22/03/2024 18:54

Yes! Got it!

  1. get your hygiene cert framed and hanging in the kitchen
2 place 2 carrots next to your next sumptuous cake with a note "for Julie and Jane" or whatever they're called on a weight watchers leaflet.
Causewerethespecialtwo · 22/03/2024 18:55

So because they have no willpower to not eat the cake…………everyone else doesn’t get cake. Because they are on a diet, everyone else in the office has to also. What a pair of selfish and self-centred cows. I’d bring in more cake every week because I’m petty like that, and put two apples next to it with a sign saying “for the people on a diet”.

FangsForTheMemory · 22/03/2024 18:56

Bringing cakes in probably makes you very popular and I'd guess these women are less popular and resent that.

I used to work in a team where there was always stuff to eat shared, and plenty of people didn't eat it because they chose not to.

DrCoconut · 22/03/2024 18:56

As long as it's gluten free I'm in! Grin

newtlover · 22/03/2024 18:56

or you could email them a link to this thread
'apparently I'm not being unreasonable'
I can't stand this whole 'being good' bollocks

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 22/03/2024 18:57

They're being ridiculous. If they have no willpower, that's their problem.
I have an allergy that means I can never eat any home made things people bring in - I don't try and stop people doing it though, just because I can't personally enjoy it.

SoupChicken · 22/03/2024 18:58

You don’t need a hygiene certificate as a home baker, if she doesn’t want it she shouldn’t eat it, if you want to bring things in that fine, I’m sure you’d soon stop if no one was eating the stuff!

Atethehalloweenchocs · 22/03/2024 19:00

I would raise it under any other business at the next team meeting. Let them explain themselves in public.

Whatthebarnacles · 22/03/2024 19:00

They're pathetic 🙄 Worried that they'll lack discipline and cave in, I bet.

"It's not fair" ... Good grief, they need to grown up!

You keep baking. If you enjoy baking and giving it out, then keep it up. I'd love you to work in our office!

dottydodah · 22/03/2024 19:00

I would tell them to piss off! Really they sound like a real couple of miseries .If everyone else enjoys your cakes then so be it .What do they do when they are out FFS!

KomodoOhno · 22/03/2024 19:01

Hoglet70 · 22/03/2024 17:07

It's not your fault the miserable cows have no willpower. Personally I would step up the baking to once a week.

I'm diabetic. People bring stuff all the time. One woman owns a bakery on the side and once a week brings stuff. Many others do too. Once in a while I have some must of the time I just don't eat it. It's not hard. I bet your coworkers love your treats. They are just bitter.
