To find Vinted depressing?

Row upon row of dark dingey photos of creased clothing, or photos of people 'modelling' clothes with their house a shit tip in the background.

People wanting top dollar for rubbish brands or things that have seen better days.

Items getting sent in a Morrisons carrier bag or a cat food box.

Just depressing!

I've never used Vinted but it sounds like ebay about 10 years ago. Yes, it is depressing

mardylookingfrump · 17/03/2024 20:18

Maybe your algorithm? Or the brands you’re favouriting? I rarely see a bad photo: I get well-lit, on a hanger, white background (usually a period-looking door), full-length, proper description with all boxes filled, etc.

I don’t find second-hand packaging depressing?! I buy second-hand for environmental reasons as well as cost; I don’t want colourful tissue paper and a sticker and a postcard and a box and bubble wrap then outer packaging. I want a £30 Toast dress.

NotAVampire · 17/03/2024 20:18

I agree that so many people price crappy items far too highly, and I’ve come across sellers who have an absolute hissy fit when a fair offer is made.

Sending items in carrier bags is fine though isn’t it? Doesn’t bother me at all as long as it’s clean and secure.

DawnBreaks · 17/03/2024 20:22

I've given up with Vinted. So many terrible garments that I would struggle to even send to the charity shop. Its a shame as its a great idea, but I just don't have the time or inclination to sift through it all anymore. The best part really are the 'shit tips' in the background. Makes me feel less of a trollop, as it makes my own house look half decent! 😄😄😄

amidsummernightsdream · 17/03/2024 20:22

Not my experience at all but I can imagine it depends what you are searching for as there’s definitely a lot of rubbish there too.

What kind of things/ brands are you looking for?
I think you need to play around with the search terms you’re using and narrow things down.
It helps to be very specific, while also being open minded, which I realise is a contradiction!
I’ve had some really great finds higher end high street/ lower end designer brands.

I find vinted really starts to ‘learn’ the brands and styles you like, so the more you’re on it the more tailored the ‘recommended items become.

Fedupwithitx · 17/03/2024 20:23

How is being environmentally friendly and sustainable in a COL crisis depressing? Bit snobby.
Times have changed, vinted is extremely helpful for people, stay off it if it bothers you

Misthios · 17/03/2024 20:23

I'm not seeing those sorts of things at all. I am browsing at the moment for a specific style of tartan dress for an event, will probably wear it once so don't want a new one. I am seeing lots of pictures of dresses on hangers over doors, or on mannequins. None on actual people and no messy rooms.

Prices fairly reasonable too - £5 for a TU dress, £20 for thr pretty dress company (new with tags).

MidnightPatrol · 17/03/2024 20:24

I could not agree more. Particularly about the ironing - why does everything look like it’s been scrunched up damp in a carrier bag?

I’ve only ever looked at reasonably expensive children’s brands (where I like the patterns etx), and they’re all like this.

Is v odd!

Coconutter24 · 17/03/2024 20:27

So don’t use it 🤷‍♀️

IWanderedLonely · 17/03/2024 20:28

I love Vinted for buying and selling. I think it depends on how specific your search criteria is, I only search for specific items I need, then it's easy to scroll past the untempting ones.

EvaporatedHour · 17/03/2024 20:30

As an example, I looked at linen trousers on there earlier. The ones that showed up were either;

modelled by someone who was about a size 4 and worn so low on their hips, while they posed in their bedroom mirror with crap everywhere in the background

In 'acceptable' condition but the seller wanted a ridiculous price for them

Or

Thrown on the floor, all creased and manly looking, and again with the seller wanting a high price for something that looked like an old duster

Manky looking not manly!

Best place ever. I got a superdry Everest coat for £15. Brand new Salomon trainers for £15. A Mountain Warwhouse softshell for my daughter for a £2. Out of all the purchases I have made, I've had 2 that haven't been what I wanted, but perfectly usable. I think its great for my wallet and great for the environment.

BigTipTop · 17/03/2024 20:35

I buy most of the kids clothes on vinted (try to buy in v good condition!) but have noticed more recently a lot of "play wear" in the description - small holes, wash wear, strained, bobbled Boden / Frugi / John Lewis type items going for £10+ each which I find bizarre!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/03/2024 20:36

I don't find it depressing - I've had some good buys.

I've certainly learned to avoid "lots of life left in it" though.

Hippee · 17/03/2024 20:37

Not my experience - but I was looking for two very specific dresses. Both were reasonably priced (second was BNWT so was happy to pay £50 for that one). Mostly what I see on there is really cheap, if you aren't so fussy about a particular pattern.

Althenameshavegone · 17/03/2024 20:38

I love it for buying and selling but what I do find depressing is the people posting on the uk vinted Facebook page (I really should unfollow) mainly
complaining “why won’t this item sell”… erm because no one wants it? People Acting like they’re running a small business reselling tat and people complaining they can’t shift huge amounts of cheap clothes that simply need to go to textile recycling / charity.

brunettemic · 17/03/2024 20:39

I love vinted, sold various things on there and will be using it to get holiday bits for the kids…which are effectively free. I think of it as a bit like going to an outlet place, you can’t be too specific about what you want and be prepared to see a lot of laughable crap.

Imposter1212 · 17/03/2024 20:39

I quite like vinted. I've not noticed creased photos on my searches.

Last year I got a Reiss dress for £25 delivered. I had been searching for months for it (Nicola Walker wore it in 'The Split' so it was out of stock brand new. Seller said it had only been worn once and had been dry cleaned. Sure enough it arrived wrapped in tissue paper inside a mail bag and the dry cleaner label was still attached to the dress.

ThePerfectDog · 17/03/2024 20:40

I love Vinted, I look for specific brands and put in brand new or new with tags. I’ve had a couple of dodgy items but for the most part I’ve had some cracking bargains and get loads of compliments

Azandme · 17/03/2024 20:40

I've just sold seven items in 36 hours.

All either new or excellent condition. All "good" brands. All uncreased, on hangers, on my (frankly lovely) 7ft tall wardrobe so you get the full length and zero surroundings. All in photos taken in yesterday's glorious natural light. All accurately described, reasonably priced, and will be neatly folded and sent in new postage bags tomorrow.

I'd have a look at your filters.

RadRad · 17/03/2024 20:40

Sounds to me like you want to be served caviar in a fish and chips shop, if you don’t like it, don’t use it. The platform is fine, the clothes/ marketing are fine, second hand is definitely here to stay in our fast fashion, overpopulated world, not to mention COL.
The algorithm you have been targeted with aligns with your searches/scrolls, etc.

opentoadvice88 · 17/03/2024 20:43

Not sure what you’re searching for but I don’t have this in my feed at all.

All parcels have been delivered in delivery bags 🤷🏻‍♀️

Curlyblondefemale · 17/03/2024 20:45

Not my experience at all, I buy from Vinted all the time.. Mainly high street items like Next or M&S but instead of paying £30 for a pair of shorts I pay £3. Doesn't bother me if it's wrapped in a carrier bag, why do you have a problem with that?

Whatafustercluck · 17/03/2024 20:45

I've only had one bad experience, otherwise it's been fantastic. 13yo ds has reached the "only Nike sportswear is good enough" stage. We can't afford new Nike unless it's for Christmas/ birthdays and he desperately needs joggers. We've had three pairs off vinted, and numerous pairs of shorts, all in near perfect condition. And my 7yo dd's Joules winter coat cost me £13 and was in similarly near perfect condition. Choose not to use it by all means, that's your choice. But many, many people who couldn't otherwise afford it have had some great clothes from Vinted.
