To find Vinted depressing?

Row upon row of dark dingey photos of creased clothing, or photos of people 'modelling' clothes with their house a shit tip in the background.

People wanting top dollar for rubbish brands or things that have seen better days.

Items getting sent in a Morrisons carrier bag or a cat food box.

Just depressing!

Random story, but I sold black jeans from river island on ebay years ago, only worn a couple times and it sold for £1 the buyer complained it had cay hair on it..
You brought £40 jeans for £1 and complaining

Did it have cat hair on it though? That’s not an unreasonable complaint!

Beezknees · 18/03/2024 07:48

I find it great as a seller. I send my items in carrier bags, they're clean and I'm not forking out extra for packaging when you sell items at such low cost anyway. All my reviews have been 5 star and I've made a bit of pocket money from it.

Misthios · 18/03/2024 07:55

I also don't mind if things are sent in big bags or carrier bags as long as it's secure. For me the point of Vinted is both getting a bargain and being more sustainable. Reusing packaging or repurposing a carrier bag instead of buying brand new packaging is a good thing.

malificent7 · 18/03/2024 08:09

Love it! I've made about £400 on there in a year...maybe more.
I have also bought some amazing items...lots bnwt.
My only gripes are if youare a seller please use neutral smelling washing liquid and posing in your garment puts me off.

Why does it put you off to get an idea of what it looks like on?

WoodBurningStov · 18/03/2024 08:23

Not the experience I've had with Vinted. Maybe it's the type of brand you've been looking at. I've bought and sold lots of things on there and only had 1/2 items which weren't as described

MrsWhattery · 18/03/2024 08:38

I love both Vinted and eBay - there will always be dross, but it’s a great way to get bargains, and lost or worn-out items you want to replace from a few years ago. And it’s so much greener for things to be resold and keep moving on to someone who wants them, instead of everyone always buying new. Plus great for if you want to customise and alter things - you can take risks if it only cost a few quid.

I do wonder what’s going on in the heads of people who post terrible out of focus photos, multiple photos that are all minor variations on the same unhelpful shot (why?), or photos of details but none of the whole thing. But if you know what you want and shop by brand it’s great.

just wish I had more time to do a big declutter and sell…

LadyBird1973 · 18/03/2024 08:53

I really like it. My main gripe is that people make offers and then don't buy when you accept their offer. But that's not Vinted's fault - can't legislate for every dickhead on the internet!

Have had some great boots - bought new with tags some Ash Jalouse ankle boots that came in original packaging and spotless, plus a new Russell & Bromley handbag (again in perfect condition) fit much less that they would have cost me new. Bought timberland boots for £25 (again perfect condition). Of course you get some duds but if you use the filters properly and have a spending limit, I reckon you can save more than you lose.

Re selling, I'm surprised but I find myself really enjoying passing on things I no longer need, to people who actually want them. It's not even about the money - more the happiness of not just dumping something or taking it up a charity shop with no idea whether someone actually wants it.

I steam the crinkles out of items I sell and send them in parcel bags. So long as they arrive undamaged I don't care how people send things to me.

weareallqueens · 18/03/2024 08:59

It's fab for 2nd hand fancy dresses for the kids. Because your monsoon dresses and similar only get worn once or twice you can get things in great condition. I've bought dresses, both DC have worn them, then I've sold them on. That feels sustainable!

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 18/03/2024 09:01

I love Vinted, maybe i've gotten lucky. Don't care how things get posted, i wash them straight away anyway.

peakygold · 18/03/2024 09:03

Vinted is fabulous. I buy retired Jellycats as an investment and there are thousands on there for a few quid. People really don't know what they have and I take advantage of it. I don't care if it arrives in a cat food box.

Mirabai · 18/03/2024 09:06

Yes, tat. Nothing like eBay which always had new and nearly new stuff.

NonPlayerCharacter · 18/03/2024 09:18

Unfortunately, like eBay and Etsy, it is probably only a matter of time before Vinted gets steamrollered by cheap fast fashion giants and all their dropshippers.

SleepingStandingUp · 18/03/2024 09:26

This morning I've picked up eleven Roahl Dahl books in great condition. Three sets of 3 in 1 Lego without boxes but with instructions, and a box of random Lego bits. All good prices, two offered me a deal to get me to buy. All packed in reused or reusable wrapping. What's not to appreciate?

justaboutdonenow · 18/03/2024 09:29

I love Vinted!

Good for the environment, good for finding decent quality nearly new (or even BNWT) clothing, pet stuff & books, what's not to love?

SkankingWombat · 18/03/2024 09:45

Meanwhile I find it really depressing when something arrives in a brand new plastic packing bag (and I sometimes wonder how the seller makes any money from it once the cost of the bag is taken off plus the time to list and post the item).
I reuse packaging to send items, and prefer to receive items in reused or repurposed packaging too. It is part of the ethos of buying second hand and reducing waste as well as unnecessary spending. As long as it arrives safely, it doesn't matter.

I have had a number of great items that exceeded expectations from Vinted, some that were perfectly fine and inline with the description, and 2 duds. One I didn't spot the fault until after I'd ok-ed it (my fault for not checking properly and it wasn't an expensive item, so very little lost), the other I messaged about with photos and the seller immediately refunded me without a quibble. As a PP, any losses are more than made up by the savings overall.
As a buyer, it is really simple to use and has helped to clear quite a gap in my loft. Most of what I make is put towards buying the next size of the items I'm selling (my listings are predominantly DCs' clothes), so works almost like an exchange system for me. My recycled packaging has never been commented on in reviews 😬

I don’t think most people are aiming to make money, just offload their unwanted stuff. With postage bags available at 50 for a fiver, they’re not going to impact on profits much.

dutysuite · 18/03/2024 10:19

I don’t buy but I did quite well selling on vinted, and I’m quite mindful about how things look and how I send items. I don’t bother selling supermarket brands etc it’s not worth my time. However, I got put off selling on vinted last year when someone wanted the football boots I was selling for a discounted priced, she told me a sob story and I believed her, I then noticed that she’d relisted the boots for three times the amount. I’d cleaned them up so well that she claimed they had only been worn once in the garden for a few minutes! I reported and her listing was removed but I was put off after that.

UpsideLeft · 18/03/2024 10:21

I keep bidding on items and the bloody vendors just completely ignore it

Luckily after a certain time period my money gets automatically refunded by Vinted

Fixerupper77 · 18/03/2024 10:31

I have mostly had really positive experiences and you will find people will struggle to sell shit unless its photographed and priced correctly.

My biggest pet peeve is people trying to sell things second hand at barely a discount from the RRP. I was looking at Tonie Boxes last night - currently 79.99 brand new with free next day delivery. So many sellers are listing for 65 PLUS fees PLUS delivery which can take up to two weeks. Just WHY!

I would rather flog it for 45 and get rid of it. Some people are either thick, greedy or both.

Perhaps 'make money' is the wrong way of phrasing it as few will make a profit, but it needs to pay for itself in terms of time and effort as a minimum. I know quite a few people who sell on Vinted and none do it just move on unwanted stuff, they also want to recoup a small portion of what they paid to put towards something else.
The people who want to simply offload will drop their stuff straight to the charity shop/clothes bank: one trip and no faffing around photographing, listing, packaging and posting. This is what I do with supermarket brands that are still in very good condition, as it isn't worth the time involved for the £1 you'll get in return.
£5 for postage bags is still an unnecessary expense that eats into the little you're getting, before you even start on the environmental issues with them.

ACuriousHare · 18/03/2024 11:44

I like it but I think both buyers and sellers have to be realistic. I'm not paying £15 for a jojo baby cardigan that's been through the wash a few times, but I might pay £4-8 if I like the design. Likewise, I price my items low as a seller (typically £3-5 and I bundle kids trousers and t-shirts). But I have a cut off point (presently £2.50) below which it isn't worth my while to locate an item, package it and take it to a drop-off point so I'm not going to accept £1 or £1.50 offers on a £3 item for that reason. I do offer generous bundle discounts, as happy to give someone buying a job lot of items a lower price.

I find it strange that more people don't buy bundles though. I tend not to buy individual items from sellers due to cost of postage but look for a seller with a few things I like.

lap90 · 18/03/2024 12:06

You sound like you'd be a nightmare buyer tbh.

I find buyers actually want little to nothing for most things.

WillimNot · 18/03/2024 12:08

Have to say I've been using Vinted for about three years now and we've only had two issues in that time.
The things we have bought have turned up in lovely condition, in good packaging and I have always found people take more care in their listings than on eBay?

I agree. The other thing which annoys me is buyers getting shirty if you don't rush out and post their item the minute they buy it. I always post within the 5 days but I'm afraid posting a £4 dress is not going to be top of my priority list and I tend to wait until I have a couple of items to post or am passing the parcel shop anyway.
