To find Vinted depressing?

EvaporatedHour · 17/03/2024 20:15

Row upon row of dark dingey photos of creased clothing, or photos of people 'modelling' clothes with their house a shit tip in the background.

People wanting top dollar for rubbish brands or things that have seen better days.

Items getting sent in a Morrisons carrier bag or a cat food box.

Just depressing!

Anything that encourages you to recycle, earns you money and gives you the option to buy things cheaply can only be a good thing. With the COL crisis vinted has been a godsend to many people. Great if you can afford to turn your nose up at it, but there are many others who are grateful.

Crackermuncher · 17/03/2024 23:43

I find the begging/ pressuring from sellers depressing..
’hi I see you like my item! Let me know how I can help you buy it, here’s an offer etc etc’
too much!

Jumpingthruhoops · 17/03/2024 23:47

I think, when it first took off, it was great. So much BNWTs at a fraction of the price. However, as more people have discovered it, it now seems to be the go-to place for all kinds of tat!

I have had great success as a buyer - and seller. I tend it to use it for those 'ones that got away' and items I've seen in store, that are now OOS. Vinted is great for that.

penjil · 17/03/2024 23:56

Coconutter24 · 17/03/2024 20:27

So don’t use it 🤷‍♀️

Yes, we know, she doesn't have to.

But she's entitled to comment upon it, isn't she?!

Stop trying to shut people down!

Maybe your algorithm? Or the brands you’re favouriting? I rarely see a bad photo: I get well-lit, on a hanger, white background (usually a period-looking door), full-length, proper description with all boxes filled, etc.

I don’t find second-hand packaging depressing?! I buy second-hand for environmental reasons as well as cost; I don’t want colourful tissue paper and a sticker and a postcard and a box and bubble wrap then outer packaging. I want a £30 Toast dress.

I used to be able to get bargains but these days I’m finding people are wanting crazy prices for their things - and then get super offended if you make an offer of what you’d be prepared to pay. I’ve regularly been called cheeky or blocked because I’ve offered on a second hand item that the seller wants full price for. I think it will be the death of Vinted as I won’t use it anymore now that the bargains are fewer and further between, rather buy new so I’m not stung with having to go through the painful disputed process or pay to return when it goes wrong

HollyKnight · 18/03/2024 01:03

Some sellers do take the piss. I bought some Lucy & Yak trousers for £26 in the sale recently on their website. I then checked Vinted to see if anyone was selling them in a different colour because I really like the fit of them....and they were all listed for £40 or more second-hand.

But if you put in the work, you will find some absolute bargains.

My main issue is with the couriers offered. Yodel takes forever and Evri has lost four of my parcels so far. So it's not a very reliable way of getting items if you are in a hurry.

nadine90 · 18/03/2024 01:15

Oh couldn’t disagree more, I love Vinted! Yes there are some ridiculous things on there - awful condition, overpriced etc. but if you’re willing to put some work in there are amazing bargains and it’s so much better for your wallet and the planet!
In the last 6 months I’ve bought:
a ghost dress in perfect condition - £8
walking boots worn once in an odd size that I struggle to get - £20
2 gorge vintage 90s dresses for Xmas partying at £10 each
sports gear for ds1 for under a tenner
a whole new wardrobe for ds2 in one bundle buy under £30
I absolutely love it! X

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/03/2024 20:36

I don't find it depressing - I've had some good buys.

I've certainly learned to avoid "lots of life left in it" though.

Ha, ha - me too!

I really like Vinted. But I never just search for “linen trousers”, for example, except to ensure I may be suggested linen trousers in brands I like in the future. Because yes, 90% of Vinted is rubbish or fast fashion, but there is also lots of great stuff.

sleepismyhobby · 18/03/2024 01:20

I buy and sell on Vinted , the stuff I sell is always freshly laundered and ironed and displayed in hanger on my bedroom door. I send my items in recycled packaging as it's better for the environment, never once had anyone complained about how it's arrived , I bought my little a boys summer clothes for this year of vinted for £10 including like new crocs and Boden shorts

Beetlebumz · 18/03/2024 02:17

You sound like you’re missing the point of Vinted op. If you find it “depressing” and care about packaging you need to buy new. Your problem really.

PeopleAreWeird · 18/03/2024 02:21

Either look at ‘New’ or buy from a shop

HangingOver · 18/03/2024 02:22

Snob klaxon. I get virtually all my clothes from there including some verrrrry nice bargain designer pieces that I'll keep forever. Who cares what their house.looks.like you're not moving in with them.

honeylou42 · 18/03/2024 03:32

I love Vinted have bought some lovely things on there, it's my go to now.

moonfacer · 18/03/2024 03:56

YANBU, I find Vinted depressing too. And it’s affecting my (non-business) selling on eBay. People message me to have a go at me for the price of my items, as if I’m forcing them to bid 🙄. They want brand new items for very cheap.

Frumpitydoo · 18/03/2024 04:23

I've come full circle back to Ebay, which seems like heaven compared to Vinted! Xxx

BatshitCrazyWoman · 18/03/2024 04:30

I've only bought two things, both of which were photographed on hangers in front of a clean, white door. Photos of front and back, and labels, all clear and in focus. Most of the things I look at are the same.

I have seen the odd photo of an item in a hanger hanging from a curtain pole in front of a window, so basically the photo was a silhouette 😂 I wouldn't buy unless I can see the item properly.

You'll always get crappy photos, of screwed up garments on a dirty floor. You don't have to buy them!

I do agree with Yodel taking forever, though. 10 days for my parcel to arrive after the seller sent it. I'd rather have Royal Mail as they are brilliant for me (I have stuff delivered to work) but no one seems to use it. If I wanted something quickly, I'd buy new.

Coconutter24 · 18/03/2024 06:15

Like you’re trying to shut me down?

The OP is entitled to comment on it exactly the same as I am entitled to comment on their post. If they don’t want different opinions don’t write anything

Sadza · 18/03/2024 06:34

Yes. I agree completely. Grim.

Usernamechange1234 · 18/03/2024 06:37

I’ve bought from Vinted several times. Always exactly as described. Never seen a picture of a dirty house. It’s just a question of careful searches and you can pick up some lovely bits!

ErnestCelendine · 18/03/2024 06:57

I love it - but like others have my Condition and Brand filters set. I also browse and like items every so often to train the algorithm (seems to work).

Today I'm wearing a Baukjen shirt (£10, still on website for £99), m&s jeans (£5 instead of £20 at m&s) and a Boden wool jumper (£8). All from vinted and in excellent condition - genuinely like new when received.

I've also used it to get bundles for the DC's residentials. Would rather get a load of leggings and tees for a tenner and not care if they get destroyed than send brand new clothes off for muddy/wet activities. Most survived and got worn all summer to the park/beach too.

NonPlayerCharacter · 18/03/2024 07:00

People wanting top dollar for rubbish brands or things that have seen better days.

Top dollar? Most of the stuff I see on there is a few quid. It may depend on your searches and purchasing history, though. As there's absolutely no protection, I wouldn't ever pay more than I was prepared to lose. Tenner at the most.

Divebar2021 · 18/03/2024 07:26

You only have to search on a fairly open search like “ pink blazer” to see some awful sellers. I have seen some shockers on there…. Really dirty shoes that the seller said just need a clean…. Ok well you clean them then. If a seller can’t be bothered to iron an item then they’re not a person I want to do business with but I’ve still had quite a few bad experiences. I once bought a new with tags Cos dress that the seller took ages to post them arrived falling out of the bag completely scrunched up. You couldn’t have screwed it up anymore if you tried. It was like she had a vendetta against me 😂. I’ve had jeans described as straight which were most definitely skinny… they even said skinny on the waistband and so it goes on.
I’m just starting out selling having sold only on eBay. I’ve just noticed a tiny mark on the front of a Kitri blouse and I will re-wash it to try and remove but I seriously wonder if it’s worth the effort for the few pounds it will likely get. The pale Cos coat that needs dry cleaning I will probably not bother with because I suspect it’s pointless from a financial viewpoint. I’ll probably just donate it instead.

DustyLee123 · 18/03/2024 07:28

I recent tried Vinted out as people had said they’d made money from it. I was shocked at how little I got for brand new with tags stuff.

BIossomtoes · 18/03/2024 07:33

Why were you shocked? You set the price.

PumpkinSly · 18/03/2024 07:39

I agree. I find it really hard to find things because there are so many awful photos. How can you judge if you like an item when the poorly lit photo is of a shapeless mass of creased fabric? I've had a few good finds, but I think you need time to trawl through vinted and after a bit i just disengage from it and stop taking it in.
