To find Vinted depressing?

Row upon row of dark dingey photos of creased clothing, or photos of people 'modelling' clothes with their house a shit tip in the background.

People wanting top dollar for rubbish brands or things that have seen better days.

Items getting sent in a Morrisons carrier bag or a cat food box.

Just depressing!

It's hit and miss but I love having a trawl through it.
Dont care about packaging so long as it arrives safe and dry.
It's a jumble sale not Selfridges.

Misthios · 18/03/2024 12:24

I've also never thought to haggle or make an offer. I bought on Vinted yesterday - a Pretty Dress Company dress, new with tags, on sale at £20 and with postage and fee it cost £25. Item on sale on the company's website for £129.

That is a massive bargain - why on earth would I waste my time and the seller's time by offering them a tenner? But people do it all the time - we sold a bike recently on Gumtree, was about £50 and had several really rude messages saying "will give you a tenner" or asking us to deliver. No, not the deal.

PrimalLass · 18/03/2024 12:29

I generally only buy things I already have - but in another colour or so I've got a reserve etc.

I am clearing out a lot of stuff just now. I list at a reasonable price after doing my research then reduce 50p or so at a time until it sells.

Rainbow1901 · 18/03/2024 12:48

I'm still relatively new to Vinted although DD loves it for the kids clothes and she has had some great bundles.
I've sold a couple items so not into it in a big way - and as I'm not working I don't need so much stuff now. But a couple of items I have posted have had ridiculous tips for prices from Vinted - which I've ignored - if the item doesn't sell then I'll think about reducing it otherwise the charity shop can have it. But I have had some cheeky offers on stuff which was only £3 or £4 anyway - it's a bit like boot sales - everyone wants to pay peanuts for stuff!!

memyselfi · 18/03/2024 13:11

I've bought and sold loads of stuff and had a very positive experience.
I don't see bad photos or junk in bedrooms at all.
I'm buying and selling designer items , maybe people take more care when the item is more valuable.
Anyway just want to give some balance , I love vinted.

It is a car boot sale. An online one.

I really fancy going to an old fashioned one now, though.

Not my experience of it at all. I’ve barely bought any new clothing since I discovered Vinted and I’ve made a fortune selling on there too. Much better than eBay with the lack of seller fees and it’s far more straightforward to use. I love it personally.

Vamooshe · 18/03/2024 13:34

I've seen those photos OP and they are grim but whoever said upthread it depends on what you are favouriting and how you search which improves your feed is right. We are a family of too much stuff and I am a sentimental hoarder so this year I'm trying my best to clear down the family wardrobes (so much is unworn or tried on and then unworn/never sent back for refund) and avoid buying shop new as much as possible. I spend my Vinted sales on other Vinted items so its about 10 items out for 1 item in. New tagged Swimming goggles, Under Armour gym bags and rucksacks with tags have all been bought by selling 5 x £1 t shirts and a few £3-5 items (unworn shoes/dresses) so for me its a giant swap shop at sale prices without having to leave my sofa. I also use it to buy doubles of items in my wardrobe I like but are wearing out (or in different colours), same for DC so you know it will fit and will be used. Packs of school shirts a size up are often on there. More than anything it makes me bin/donate to sift for anything worth selling to try and replace with usable items and be a bit more brutal with the view that otherwise they are using up my storage space with no benefit! I also think that as a sentimental hoarder, if I like an item but have no use for it, taking a photo for a final send off and finding it a new home has meant I can say goodbye because it won't be vacuum packed in under bed storage for the rest of its life!

FleurDLease · 18/03/2024 13:39

I've had good and bad experiences. I love Vinted though and prefer it to eBay now. Bought some nice Jaeger jackets and Monki dresses, linen tops for like a fiver. Lovely £100 boots from a top Danish company for £10. I don't have much spare money so I can not afford to buy nice expensive clothes new so I'm happy to trawl through Vinted til I find something lovely.

I have received some disgusting garments too. OK, most can be washed but when they are described as 'very good' but arrive with bodily fluids, pet fur or last month's dinner on then I call it out and I have always been refunded.

But it is a bit depressing seeing the poor photos of shabby clothes and descriptions saying 'worn twice, a bit stained but will wash off'. And it's obvious sometimes that people are desperate to try to make a couple of pounds extra which is sad.

notthatkindofFatCat · 18/03/2024 14:04

I love it and carrier bag recycling packaging too.

I hate the sizing - so 14 is XL on vinted - I'd have put it at L and 16 as XL but whatever

The only issue is you can get listings that are anywhere between 12 and 22 + within that criteria.

And then it arrives stinking to high heaven of zoflora, even after a week of airing outside.

I wish there was an option to avoid overly fabreezed or zoflorad items

Snob klaxon. I get virtually all my clothes from there including some verrrrry nice bargain designer pieces that I'll keep forever. Who cares what their house.looks.like you're not moving in with them.

I partly disagree with this. The condition of their home could be a good indication of the condition of the item.

Also, if there are two sellers selling the exact same jacket for a similar price, I will always pick the one from a 'smoke and pet free home'.

So it's very relevant.

Jumpingthruhoops · 18/03/2024 14:59

Also, can I just add, while we're here: 'Brand New Without Tags' is NOT a thing!

If there's no tag attached, as a buyer, I will assume the item has been worn.

Anything that encourages you to recycle, earns you money and gives you the option to buy things cheaply can only be a good thing. With the COL crisis vinted has been a godsend to many people. Great if you can afford to turn your nose up at it, but there are many others who are grateful.

No-one's turning their noses up at people buying things second hand.

It's the manner of selling

Yes! On ebay too: nothing worse than opening the package and getting walloped with that fabric softener stench. Ugh.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 19/03/2024 05:28

I think Vinted is an excellent venture… it slows down the throw away nature of the fashion environment, allows people to make a bit of money, and/or clothe themselves and their kids for much less than the high street.

In that respect, you can’t knock it!

That being said, my experience is that it’s like an online jumble sale. I definitely need to go and polish my algorithms…

Haha I'm guilty of this, but I'm actually genuine when I say new without tags. I used to have a bad habit of buying stuff in the sale, especially nice dresses thinking they would come in handy for an occasion down the line. I've now put on weight and I can't fit in them 😥

HelloMiss · 19/03/2024 10:28

With optimistic prices, charges and postage it's not so 'cheap'

HelloMiss · 19/03/2024 10:28

Oh, and add in the worry of being 'scammed' and you might as well pay a few quid more for it new

Some prices are optimistic but less so than on eBay. I’ve bought a few things where I feel like I’m ripping the seller off. I’ve bought two new pairs of boots, quite clearly never worn, for a tenner each. I know for a fact that they retailed for over £100.

I use "Brand New WIthout Tags" mostly for unworn shoes, boxed beauty products etc.

I spend a bit of time on my Vinted listings - wooden hanger, nice period door, wooden floor, nothing else visible. Steam the clean garment. Write some proper description (is it true to size, has it ever been worn/washed, if so how much, pet free/smoke free home etc). Wrap it in tissue and a mailer bag (cheap, bought a job lot). Sell 75% of my stuff within the first week. Absolutely love it as a seller but most stuff I have bought on there has got re-sold.

thecatsthecats · 19/03/2024 11:52

My favourite are broken electronics.

I've just bought a second hand pram rocker for a reasonable discount - 60%. Most of them are on there for only a little less than RRP.

The thing is, if you've spent £50 and got 100 uses out of it, then sell for £20, you've price the uses at £30/100, so about 33p. I think most of us would agree that if you could get your baby to sleep by handing someone 50p a go, you'd do it every time!
