To find Vinted depressing?

Row upon row of dark dingey photos of creased clothing, or photos of people 'modelling' clothes with their house a shit tip in the background.

People wanting top dollar for rubbish brands or things that have seen better days.

Items getting sent in a Morrisons carrier bag or a cat food box.

Just depressing!

Last one, I promise. I know it’s a bit expensive but that’s because of many factors, mainly I’m not sure I really want to sell it. This lady came SO rude out of nowhere like ‘why is the price so high’ I gave her an answer and said that’s quite a rude question then she starts about ‘political correctness’? 🤷‍♀️😂

I’m still reeling from the audacity of this one 😂 I have so many of these. This scarf is worth over £1000 and it’s new! 🤦‍♀️

Something is worth what someone will pay.
You have valued it at £100 yourself and it has been for sale for a year?
So it isn't worth £1000 or even £100
Although I agree that £10 is a piss take.

lovehatelovehate · 17/03/2024 22:49

Jeezo, what on earth is wrong with wrapping clothes in a carrier bag?! It’s secondhand clothing, everything I sell is for a couple of pounds. As long as the bag is clean who cares? How would like you things to be packaged?! 😐

How is any scarf worth £1k??????

CreateAUsername2024 · 17/03/2024 22:52

Yanbu I hate it. Probably are some decent people selling nice stuff but a majority seem like they want everything for free. Seems a lot of effort for not much reward

I’ve actually thought of that before! I think the target audience isn’t on Vinted though so yeah my business plan is flawed 😂

The scarf is for sale on line new for between £31-78. Not £1000 or even £100
Are you the seller or the person who offered £10.
I am confused.

Lentilweaver · 17/03/2024 23:07

I prefer charity shops. Sifting through Vinted makes my head hurt. If I had young DC, I would use it as they grow out of clothes so fast, but for myself, I prefer to buy less, but at places where I can try on and return.

You'd be better off renting this out on a luxury rental app :) generally people on those appreciate the value of these sort of items x

£31 new from the manufacturers website and £78 on another site ? Would there be a rental market?

Orangeandgold · 17/03/2024 23:12

I only look for brand new or new without tags. I also only shop certain brands that are likely to maintain their quality after a wash. I tend to inspect the picture of the clothes and don’t buy if it looks rough.

It is depressing. I did receive 1 bad quality item that was pre washed and hanged in a way that slightly skewed the garment which was annoying. So now I’m pickier.

It’s also reassuring to see tags in the pictures.

Momsitter · 17/03/2024 23:16

We're definitely a far cry from going to pick up your handmade dress in a brown paper package.
Vinted is hitting the spot right now as a contrast to Temu et al but give it 2 or 3 years and I think people will be back to wanting something a bit more special.
IMO we are due a return to the "buy one thing a year and make it quality" mindset of the 50s but how and when that happens, I don't know

LoveHeartsFan · 17/03/2024 23:17

As someone fairly new to Vinted, and a seller, not a buyer (so the algorithm hasn’t yet ‘learnt’ me), I’ve been very surprised by how poorly a lot of people present the goods they want to sell, and don’t describe them well either. ‘Creased tat’, basically. People might not have seen them in their feeds, but oh boy, do they exist! And it’s just basic common sense to show the goods to their best advantage if you want people to buy!

I don’t sell often, just as and when I want to get rid of things, but I do aim to be a fair seller. Everything is clean and ironed, photographed against a white door in good light, and details (selling details like nice buttons or small flaws like a tiny piece of invisible mending in an otherwise flawless vintage piece) highlighted. I also try to describe items comprehensively - if it’s vintage, I give the dimensions to ensure a good fit, without relying on the label size.

It means I can justify my prices and have a better chance of selling, than the person who’s just photographed the same item for £10 all scrunched up. If you can’t be bothered to make the effort when you sell, how does the customer know that you’re going to make effort elsewhere, eg speedy dispatch?

Mylittlepea · 17/03/2024 23:19

I like Vinted. I’ve sold lots of stuff (clean & ironed😉) and bought some great things too - but I only search on ‘new’ and ‘very good’ - seems to work for me avoiding old, worn things.

I’ve had a pair of Ugg’s for £15 delivered (don’t care if they are fake tbh but I’ve worn them all winter), various branded sports clothes for my son who grows out of things so quickly and a few Mint Velvet bits that would be out of my budget if brand new in John Lewis….

Baseline14 · 17/03/2024 23:19

I was just saying to my 7yo that everything I've spent a decent amount of money on sits constantly in his wardrobe but everything I've bought him off vinted is never off his back. I got 2 sets of john lewis dungarees for Halloween (mario and luigi) for a couple pounds each in perfect condition and they have worn them constantly. Old stuff from Gap when it was good quality with tags on. Much prefer it to my previously loved supermarket kids clothes which rarely wash well.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 17/03/2024 23:22

I’m with you @EvaporatedHour It’s like an online jumble sale… to me, anyway!

Nanny0gg · 17/03/2024 23:22

mardylookingfrump · 17/03/2024 20:18

Maybe your algorithm? Or the brands you’re favouriting? I rarely see a bad photo: I get well-lit, on a hanger, white background (usually a period-looking door), full-length, proper description with all boxes filled, etc.

I don’t find second-hand packaging depressing?! I buy second-hand for environmental reasons as well as cost; I don’t want colourful tissue paper and a sticker and a postcard and a box and bubble wrap then outer packaging. I want a £30 Toast dress.

I see some shocking photos on there.

Either creased spread out on the floor, wonky on a hanger with undone buttons or creased on a hanger.

Awful

QueenBitch666 · 17/03/2024 23:24

I've only had excellent good quality bargains on Vinted

Gagaandgag · 17/03/2024 23:24

I love Vinted so much. I don’t get this. Maybe change your brand search

Nanny0gg · 17/03/2024 23:27

RadRad · 17/03/2024 20:40

Sounds to me like you want to be served caviar in a fish and chips shop, if you don’t like it, don’t use it. The platform is fine, the clothes/ marketing are fine, second hand is definitely here to stay in our fast fashion, overpopulated world, not to mention COL.
The algorithm you have been targeted with aligns with your searches/scrolls, etc.

What's that got to do with poor presentation?

If the photo is poor what are the chances of the item being in good condition?

I sell on Ebay and I take a lot of trouble with presentation, photos and delivery

Bluegray2 · 17/03/2024 23:29

Never been on vinted but from the way you are describing it, it certinally seems depressing,, I couldn’t be looking at that but more importantly why are you if you find it that depressing?

LaWench · 17/03/2024 23:31

I got banned for selling a handbag. They wouldn't tell me why I was banned so I have no idea what rule I broke.

Onceuponatimeiwasahoe · 17/03/2024 23:32

Random story, but I sold black jeans from river island on ebay years ago, only worn a couple times and it sold for £1 the buyer complained it had cay hair on it..
You brought £40 jeans for £1 and complaining

Onceuponatimeiwasahoe · 17/03/2024 23:37
