I've had quite a few experiences that make me believe. I was walking home from work and I was on a path that was popular with dog walkers and heard footsteps and a dog panting behind me so I stood aside to let them pass and there was nobody there. Another time I was in a hotel with my young son. He was sharing my bed and asleep and I turned off the light and closed my eyes but then had a feeling to open them again. I did and I saw a woman leaning over the bed looking right at me. I closed my eyes tight, terrified but didn't scream as I didn't want to frighten my son. I opened them again and she was gone. In a house I used to live with my husband I kept having a feeling that things were being rearranged on a shelf in our bedroom. He denied moving stuff. We were sat on the bed together and a bottle of aftershave turned full circle and moved on the shelf. We watched it happen together.

Wooloohooloo · 17/03/2024 15:01

No but I do love ghost stories and horror films. I'm also an atheist.

dottiedodah · 17/03/2024 15:03

Shiveringinthecountry The reason I started this thread was because of Ann Diamond, and a story of about 20 years back was looking for a house ,an old lady answered and the EA said doors were locked and no one there .So a ghost or not ? Some online info as well

No. If ghosts were a thing, we'd be absolutely overrun with them.

This!!!!!!!!!

ButterflyTable · 17/03/2024 15:07

Yes I’ve seen one in my parent’s old house, more of an apparition maybe. My great - grandmother walking past the front room. I wasn’t scared to be honest just a bit confused as to why she should be there. Never seen her again or a ghost since.

dolskarella · 17/03/2024 15:16

Nope, absolutely no proof

Just went looking.

The ghost that tried to sell me her house: Anne Diamond used to scoff at stories of haunted homes until she had a very spooky encounter

‘They found her lying on the living room floor; she’d been dead for two weeks.' Those words were the final twist in the tale of my very own ghost story.

Bobbotgegrinch · 17/03/2024 15:28

I read an interesting post on here a while ago making the point that if you think of a film which are a "real" depiction of what actually happened in the past without any actual human agency in the humans in the film - just a record of it.

That shows that in principle moving images that actually show what happened in the past can exist.

who is to say that the same thing can't happen in some way in the universe - so these sightings of bomber planes flying over Derwent valley or of soldiers marching and so on - might be the same as a film in some sort of time shift recording by the universe. so what the people that see these things see is 'real' in the sense that it is an actual image depiction of people from the past but it is not 'real' in the sense of being humans from the past who have human agency or can actually do anything.

I thought this was a really interesting idea and wish I could find the post. It's a theory I'd like to read more about as it has a grain (just a grain mind!) of possiblity about it.

I don't believe in ghosts btw. I do believe that people in a traumatised state can believe they see things but that this is dream/hallucination not real ghosts.

dottiedodah · 17/03/2024 15:46

Questionforhelp Interesting idea .sounds plausible .I am on the fence really as to whether or not they exist. Why I started the thread ,esp regarding Anne Diamonds experience See above

I have had a couple of weird things happen, that I have no explanation for.

I think there very well could be other stuff occurring that we aren't aware of. That's as much as I would like to say.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 17/03/2024 17:54

Nah - no-one ever sees ghosts in 80s shellsuits or 70s flares, always old fashioned long dresses.

iloveshetlandponies · 17/03/2024 17:55

I think they're real

savethatkitty · 17/03/2024 17:57

Have personally experienced one myself, so absolutely yes!

Mull · 17/03/2024 18:03

I don’t believe but, more importantly, I think they should believe in themselves

I work in an NT property that's just over 700 years old.

You wouldn't believe the ridiculous amount of people who ask if it's haunted.

Just WHY?? Do they think people never die in new builds, or blocks of flats?

If ghosts existed they wouldn't be exclusive to old houses, would they? 🙄

Well, I came across a poltergeist in a modern shop a while ago.

I was in a cosmetics and perfume outlet shop and felt this eerie presence. I sensed a ghost. Suddenly the ghost lady - I could see the spectral outline of a young woman - started throwing high-end cosmetics into my bag. I was very spooked and tried to leave the shop.

Unfortunately, none of the store detective, the manager, the police or the magistrates believed my explanation. Sooo closed minded.

PleaseBeHappier · 17/03/2024 18:06

Yes absolutely

Fulshaw · 17/03/2024 18:06

No. Because as soon as you start to examine it, the logic falls apart.

Why has no one caught one on video?

Why are they always Victorian and not, say, 90s?

Why do they always appear in creepy
places and at creepy times and not in Asda on a Tuesday morning?

I do think the human mind is very, very suggestible though.

Prydddan · 17/03/2024 18:12

Elphame · 17/03/2024 13:57

Experienced too many to not believe in them!

Same

Howbizarre22 · 17/03/2024 18:13

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 17/03/2024 14:29

No. I don’t believe in ghosts. Or fortune telling, speaking to the dead, telepathy, distance seeing, psychic powers or any other part of the carnival of nonsense that is woo.

I find it depressing that so many people continue to believe in ghosts, ghouls and the like.

I think it’s depressing to believe that the only things in existence are only the things we have evidence for. In fact it borders on arrogance to think we as humans already know absolutely everything about everything. Science as a study is amazing & incredible as is the world we know don’t get me wrong but just because we can’t explain something, doesn’t mean it isn’t real or doesn’t exist. Better to keep an open mind.

pinksheetss · 17/03/2024 18:15

@Howbizarre22 exactly!!

I haven't had any ghost experiences myself, but im not closed minded to the fact

I think the world, the universe etc is so complex we can't merely understand it all
