Why is there absolutely no way to access money?

Sashamalia · 17/03/2024 12:02

I lost my bank card last Friday. This bank does not have any emergency cash option. I ordered a replacement bank card. It should be with me at the end of next week.

I have another bank account with a different bank. I just opened it a couple of weeks ago. So no money in it yet. I have a bank card for the second account.

On friday eve , i tried to transfer money from my first bank account to my second bank account using the mobile apps.

It said on the app that if you transfer at the weekend , it won't go through till the next business day. Next Monday is a bank holiday in ireland, so the transfer won't go through until Tuesday.

I've then tried to download revolut, as it is meant to do instant transfers even at weekends.

Revolut won't work for me, as no matter how many times I've taken different photos of my passport, it says the passport is not clear enough.

I really need to access my money to pay for something next Monday. I can't wait till tuesday.

Is there absolutely no way to access money without a bank card. ?

Mastercard is through BofI but payments are via Bill Payments not A/C transfer. Mastercard is run by another company so treated like any other bill.

Have you updating software? Or switch off phone and start again. I use BofI app for € and £ accounts and have never had a problem.

Have you tried phoning their helpline. Too late today but try tomorrow morning.

Its not just one friend.
I know a lot of people who got into credit card debt.

If you go on any of those askaboutmoney forums , a lot of people are on there asking for help on how to get out of credit card debt.

I will never get a credit card.

Credit cards were not invented to help you, they were invented to make banks money.

Ask anyone that works in a bank.

Why would I need to ask anyone who works in a bank anything? I'm perfectly aware of how credit cards work, that knowledge isn't restricted to bank employees

Of course some credit card users will get into debt but it's not compulsory nor is debt catching from friends

Dint have one but don't try to make iout they are some kind of irresistible evil

This is very strange you are in Ireland not a third world country! Almost every developed country's banks have the ability to transfer money instantly!

Youre completely wrong.

Every developed county does not have the ability to transfer money instantly.

The EU are only updating instant Bank transfers this year, later this year 2024.

Under the new eu legislation, which will stet later this year, if you send from one EU bank account to another eu bank account, the transfer will get there instantly,
including if you send outside business hours.

This is NOT in place now.

But it will be in place later this year

Just to remind you that only iPhones have apple pay,

and a lot of people don't have iPhones!

get Google pay. works on android phones

shoppingshamed · 17/03/2024 16:58

Sashamalia · 17/03/2024 16:52

Are you sure that every developed country has the ability to transfer money instantly?

Because a poster above said that the whole EU does not do the faster payments scheme.

The UK does the faster payments scheme. The EU doesn't. At present.

Google suggests that the EU does have faster payments

It says here that they are updating the whole system this year. Dated February 2024

  • Council of the EU Press release 26 February 2024 10:45
Council adopts regulation on instant payments The Council adopted today a regulation that will make instant payments fully available in euro to consumers and businesses in the EU and in EEA countries.

Ireland uses sepa payments which is down for matennace this weekend for certain times and days. the apps adn websites all had this communication
but if you are boi and a friend is boi transfer are automatic same with aib even at weekends.

Are you not able to see your cards on your banking app?
Mine are on there so you can use the details online before you get your card in the post.

I'm surprised banking in Ireland is so archaic I thought it was supposed to be Europe's tech hub

it is because we have Google facbook linked in etc plus loads of phrama companies which has got better due ti brexit aswell
however I am aib and that's the best bank user wise for their app. boi who are the biggest bank in the country have the worst feckin app ever. their banking online is horrendous the worst ever to use. we have lost three banks or more in the past 5 years so no choice with what we have

Snozzlemaid · 17/03/2024 17:09

I know that. I have read the whole thread.
But thought this might help you in the future or if you need to buy something else before you get your card now.

Just thought you might not know you can see your card in some apps.

BoI are bad for this.
AIB is instant transfers. I use them. DH eventually gave up on BoI and switched to AIB too.

For next time set up google pay and get Revolut set up too.

I have a few bank accounts and every one of them does instant transfers through the app whether it’s weekday, weekend, or bank holiday.

First Direct
Monzo
Bank of Scotland
Barclays
TSB

My husband also has a Santander account and they’re the same.

Any bank that doesn’t offer this is not going to last, surely.

dementedpixie · 17/03/2024 17:14

@Clarabell77 the OP isn't in the UK so doesn't have any of those banks to choose from.

Banks in the EU have a completely different payment transfer scheme, than banks in the UK

I am in the UK, and my Bank a/c xfers straight away.
However, I also have a Building society account, and that xfers the following business day.
I last xferred some money from there the Friday before Xmas, and it xferred the following Wednesday (because of the Bank Holidays). However, it makes it quite clear, and I usually do these xfers from my bank a/c.
The solution for the OP, is in future to have more than one account.
Otherwise, xfer to a friend explaining that it wont go through until Tuesday, etc

Thanks for the replies. I've sorted it the best I can now .

I've borrowed the money off a family member now, and told them I will pay them back later next week

I absolutely have to pay for something this weekend, Due to timing issues, it can't wait until Tuesday.

I know i could have asked a family member earlier. But I hate asking family for money. Especially as the amount I need is not that small, and my family are not rolling in money.

I felt really bad asking them

Anyway I've learned a lot of lessons from this..

  1. in future i will make sure I have money in two accounts.

  2. i will also take a photo of my bank card, so if I lose the card, I will still have all the details i need , if i need to pay for something online

Edited

Glad it's sorted now

Borrowing off someone is the best way till can transfer money /get new card

You’ve come on here to whinge about how Irish banking is crap then get annoyed because people who aren’t in Ireland agree it’s crap. lol. Plenty of solutions were given to you, you’re very argumentative!
