Why is there absolutely no way to access money?

Sashamalia · 17/03/2024 12:02

I lost my bank card last Friday. This bank does not have any emergency cash option. I ordered a replacement bank card. It should be with me at the end of next week.

I have another bank account with a different bank. I just opened it a couple of weeks ago. So no money in it yet. I have a bank card for the second account.

On friday eve , i tried to transfer money from my first bank account to my second bank account using the mobile apps.

It said on the app that if you transfer at the weekend , it won't go through till the next business day. Next Monday is a bank holiday in ireland, so the transfer won't go through until Tuesday.

I've then tried to download revolut, as it is meant to do instant transfers even at weekends.

Revolut won't work for me, as no matter how many times I've taken different photos of my passport, it says the passport is not clear enough.

I really need to access my money to pay for something next Monday. I can't wait till tuesday.

Is there absolutely no way to access money without a bank card. ?

Googling suggests AIB uses the faster payments system

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/03/2024 17:18

No I don't pay fees on any bank account. Have NatWest - nationwide and Santander

Yes, you keep cash in your house.

You’ve come on here to whinge about how Irish banking is crap then get annoyed because people who aren’t in Ireland agree it’s crap. lol. Plenty of solutions were given to you, you’re very argumentative!

This 100%

I didn't come on to whinge about how irish banking is crap.

I didn't make my opening post about any country at all.

I came on to ask if there was anyway to transfer money at the weekend, that I wasn't thinking of.

When posters kept saying "we can transfer instantly in these banks" I then had to reply that those banks don't exist in ireland.

I do keep cash in my house. You can't use cash to buy things online, can you?

I think your bank is the issue, not banking in general

bouncydog · 17/03/2024 17:25

@Sashamalia the Irish banking system is very slow. I often transfer euros (I’m offshore) using Wise to my daughter. Wise tells me that funds will reach her account in Ireland within 4 hours. It never shows as being in the account until the following working day. I’m very careful not to transfer on Fridays or over weekends and bank holidays as that could mean a 4 day wait as you have found. Might be worth looking at Wise if you can’t sort Revolut and keep some money in there just in case. You can also get a physical card to withdraw from the cash point. And in case anybody tells me the delay is with my offshore bank it is not - transfers go through instantaneously even on a weekend!

"I need to transfer from boi to another bank,

I can't do that at the weekend"

You @Bridie1980 came on and said " you can transfer from a boi account to another boi account at the weekend . You're wrong!"

Read back. You answered something completely different to what i asked

I used someone else's bank card. That's how I sorted it. And I'll pay her back next week

There is planned maintenance on the EU SEPA this weekend.

This is a planned maintenance window to make regulatory changes to the SEPA Scheme Rulebook. It affects all SEPA member banks. We apologise for any inconvenience.

No I got annoyed when people in the UK said over and over "why don't you use this UK bank"

And I've had to say about 10 times "that bank does not exist in ireland'!

I've said it so many times.

  • Are you in the UK Yourself?
what if i said to you over and over , "why don't you use bank of ireland?"

Would that annoy you?

Ok, credit card or pre-paid card like you might use for travelling as an emergency back up.

I've just transfer to Revolut ( a different bank to BOI) and it hit instantly! In the nicest possible way.... get over yourself!

dementedpixie · 17/03/2024 17:14

@Clarabell77 the OP isn't in the UK so doesn't have any of those banks to choose from.

Ah, okay, I hadn’t realised that.

Wow! What an amazing genius you are.

If you're that much of an amazing genius, you will be able to go back, read the thread and see where I said

"I don't have revolut and I can't set it up as it won't accept photos of my id"

Can you read?

You say you pay it off in full every month

Then why not just use a debit card?
It sounds exactly like using a debit card

You said you get some vouchers back. I guess if you think that's worth it

Yes exactly, it’s like using a debit card but I’ve made £500 in vouchers which I wouldn’t have had with a debit card (used them for a new mattress and armchair which isn’t bad for free). Plus with a credit card there’s greater protection if things go wrong with a purchase. Plus it keep my credit rating really good (using a debit card alone doesn’t give a good credit rating) which helps with applying for mortgages etc.
Theres literally no downsides to using a credit card PROVIDED you pay if off every month so don’t pay any interest

Do you not pay fees on bank accounts in the UK?

Bank of ireland charge me 6 euro a month just to have a bank account.

That's cool, if uk banks don't do that

In the UK they pay you to have bank accounts and credit cards.

They're usually free but come with cashback, pay interest and other incentives. Or you pay a small fee but more than make it back in cashback and interest.

I have several of both and make over £1k pa from mine.

Of course if you spend money that's not yours you can get in a mess but it's not inevitable if you have a credit card.

Wow that's so amazing; how clever you are!!

What's that got to do with the issue OP is having? You are being argumentative for no reason and giving answers that were to questions noone even asked.

I'm not in the UK!!!

I've said it several times.

Banks in ireland don't have the same services as banks in the uk

Yes but I think people are saying do you have to go with a bank that has a branch there or can you just join a bank online - First Direct for example, who don’t have branches?
