Why is there absolutely no way to access money?

I lost my bank card last Friday. This bank does not have any emergency cash option. I ordered a replacement bank card. It should be with me at the end of next week.

I have another bank account with a different bank. I just opened it a couple of weeks ago. So no money in it yet. I have a bank card for the second account.

On friday eve , i tried to transfer money from my first bank account to my second bank account using the mobile apps.

It said on the app that if you transfer at the weekend , it won't go through till the next business day. Next Monday is a bank holiday in ireland, so the transfer won't go through until Tuesday.

I've then tried to download revolut, as it is meant to do instant transfers even at weekends.

Revolut won't work for me, as no matter how many times I've taken different photos of my passport, it says the passport is not clear enough.

I really need to access my money to pay for something next Monday. I can't wait till tuesday.

Is there absolutely no way to access money without a bank card. ?

If your bank card is lost it's cancelled and Apple Pay is out of action

zingally · 17/03/2024 16:04

My transfers have always been instant, even on the weekends? Worth a try, surely?

No help to you now, but this is why it's always good to have a credit card as well. Putting all your financial ability on the back of one card is a recipe for trouble.

Are you in the UK? Transfers are not instant at weekends in ireland

Do you not pay fees on bank accounts in the UK?

Bank of ireland charge me 6 euro a month just to have a bank account.

That's cool, if uk banks don't do that

There are lots of bank accounts in the UK where you don't pay fees. You do on some but usually they offer extra services.

I understand what you're saying about Ireland being a smaller country so they don't benefit from economies of scale.

I'm glad you're sorted now. This sort of thing is really syressful.

Do you think that everyone has a credit card?

I only know one person that still uses a credit card, as they are notorious for being the worst way to get into long term debt with high interest rates

Yeah sorry i did. Most people I know use them because of the cashback then pay in full monthly.

I've never met anyone, who thought that everyone has a credit card, before

Not everyone can get a credit card. You need a regular minimum income each month.

Not always. DH and I have both lost bank cards a few times (getting old), can request another one online. You don’t have to cancel card. We just freeze transactions on the lost card until we’re actually using it for a transaction then refreeze. Takes seconds.

Apple Pay still works and you get a notification when new card is issued with new card details which only takes a day or two, so add that onto Apple Pay so can use it before you even receive the card in the post. Very impressed with that.

That’s with Lloyds though. Not sure if available in Ireland.

Yeah i was just looking at the current criteria there.

i dont want a credit card. But i was just interested

But it says to get a bank of ireland credit card. You must have a certain income each month. And you must also not have missed any mortgage or loan repayments.

I've heard too many horror stories of people getting credit cards (for emergencies) then using it, and getting into huge debt.

They have the worst interest rates.

Just to remind you that only iPhones have apple pay,

and a lot of people don't have iPhones!

I have Google pay on my phone (android). Means you can pay in shops using just your phone rather than needing the card. Can also use it online if the retailer offers that method of payment

Most phones have a version of it though, e.g. Samsung have Google Pay. I think all Smart phones have their own version now.

Yeah I didn't have Google pay set up before

When I get my next bank card , I will set up Google pay, as I see I need a back up

I don't have a credit card because i know several people who are in huge credit card debt. The interest rates are extortionate. I don't think that they are a good service.

They are really designed to get you into continual debt. In my opinion. That's why i don't have one.
They might suit some people

Maybe you should reco sider your opinion then, your friends inability to manage a credit card has contributed to your problems, it has no bearing on you

Loads of people use credit cards perfectly sensibly every single day and never get into debt at all

After all the problems with supermarket systems yesterday it's daft to I my have one way to pay for things. Like most of the posters on here I had no idea that Ireland banks were so backwatd

Mine don't. And the Santander account pays monthly interest on up to £20k, and gives (a tiny amount of) cashback on certain direct debit payments.

But we have so many banks here in the UK that there's a lot of competition for business, so the market is very different from ROI.

Transfers don't go through on weekends.

They go through on the next business day.

Explain the situation and ask very nicely for a loan and transfer them the money so they can see it pending in their account

Its not just one friend.
I know a lot of people who got into credit card debt.

If you go on any of those askaboutmoney forums , a lot of people are on there asking for help on how to get out of credit card debt.

I will never get a credit card.

Credit cards were not invented to help you, they were invented to make banks money.

Ask anyone that works in a bank.

Hi Op. I've just transferred €20 from my BofI a/c to Mastercard using the app, went through instantly. I always find app very fast.

Ireland is not "backward" . That is a nasty thing to say.

The UK is three times larger than Ireland.

Do you really expect smaller countries to have the exact same services in place, as the larger countries do?

And why would you call anywhere backwards. That's just an awful thing to say.

I use a credit card for all my spending, pay it off in full every month so have never paid any interest. Have made approx £500 in vouchers over the last few years by doing this as every time I use it I get points towards vouchers.
Pretty much everyone I know does the same thing.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/03/2024 16:45

Sorry to hear this

Sounds a nightmare and as I'm in the U.K. and can transfer easily in seconds think many can't h feet and why you can't in Ireland

Can you do an online account like sterling - for back up so can transfer and take out

Best thing to do is to ask a friend if they can lend you some money /you transfer it to them. Or ask 3/4 if all can lend £50 and transfer all £50

How much do you need ideally

Must be horrible to not be able to get money now when have it

You say you pay it off in full every month

Then why not just use a debit card?
It sounds exactly like using a debit card

You said you get some vouchers back. I guess if you think that's worth it

This is very strange you are in Ireland not a third world country! Almost every developed country's banks have the ability to transfer money instantly!

Are you sure that every developed country has the ability to transfer money instantly?

Because a poster above said that the whole EU does not do the faster payments scheme.

The UK does the faster payments scheme. The EU doesn't. At present.
