Why is there absolutely no way to access money?

Sashamalia · 17/03/2024 12:02

I lost my bank card last Friday. This bank does not have any emergency cash option. I ordered a replacement bank card. It should be with me at the end of next week.

I have another bank account with a different bank. I just opened it a couple of weeks ago. So no money in it yet. I have a bank card for the second account.

On friday eve , i tried to transfer money from my first bank account to my second bank account using the mobile apps.

It said on the app that if you transfer at the weekend , it won't go through till the next business day. Next Monday is a bank holiday in ireland, so the transfer won't go through until Tuesday.

I've then tried to download revolut, as it is meant to do instant transfers even at weekends.

Revolut won't work for me, as no matter how many times I've taken different photos of my passport, it says the passport is not clear enough.

I really need to access my money to pay for something next Monday. I can't wait till tuesday.

Is there absolutely no way to access money without a bank card. ?

Firstly she said you couldn't transfer to any bank then She's keeps insisting that it's not possible to transfer to other banks despite others and me saying it is. She's making the Irish banking system sound like something from the Stone Age..... it really isn't! I work in the industry and she's spreading misinformation

BashfulClam · 17/03/2024 17:54

Chase bank. You get a digital card to use on Apple/android pay instantly.

Xenia · 17/03/2024 17:55

Happy St Patrick's Day - let there be peace and harmony between the UK and Ireland.

Bjorkdidit · 17/03/2024 17:55

I'm not sure the OP is eligible for UK bank accounts even if they're entirely online.

It will usually be in the small print that you have to be resident here and there would also be currency issues.

Punkkitty · 17/03/2024 17:56

Oh OP, you poor thing., Bank of Ireland, commonly known as Bank of Bastards in this house are utterly useless and you can do nothing instantly with them never mind a bank holiday weekend!
Glad you got sorted.

NewYearResolutions · 17/03/2024 17:57

Apple Pay is linked to a card so you can’t use it if it’s reported lost. However if you bank with one of the more competent banks, your new card will appear on the bank app instantly and you can then link it to Apple Pay again. Fraudster got my card details earlier this year so I went through cancelling and replacing cards.

Transfer is instant if the banks participate with quick banking. I bank with two and the transfer is instant in the weekend.

I think you need a better bank. Not that it’s any help now.

Miyagi99 · 17/03/2024 17:57

I have a credit card for the same reason others have stated, more protection for big purchases and I always pay the full balance off monthly so there are no charges.

You're the one that is completely spreading the wrong information.

She is personally not able to transfer to her other account not held at BOI. She hasn't been able to set up a Revolut account. She hasn't tried to transfer to all of the other banks in existence.

You are being antagonistic towards her for no reason

You say you pay it off in full every month

Then why not just use a debit card?
It sounds exactly like using a debit card

You said you get some vouchers back. I guess if you think that's worth it

I get about £20 a month back with mine
Also more protection on large purchases
But I do agree you have to be finsncially astute and many people aren't.

You can stop your physical card and still use Apple Pay though.

NewYearResolutions · 17/03/2024 18:02

Not if it’s reported list I think. At least when I did mine, Apple Pay on my phone knows fhe card isn’t valid. It isn’t the same as stopping the card on the app. The bank would have invalidated the card number.

fetchacloth · 17/03/2024 18:03

My debit card was cancelled by my bank last year as it had been cloned.
I had to wait about a week for the new card to arrive but I was told that if I needed cash in the meantime, I could withdraw it over the counter at the bank using my passport and a utility bill for proof of home address.
I think this is fairly standard practice to avoid fraud.

Fizzadora · 17/03/2024 18:03

Crack open a bottle @Sashamalia and cancel your Mumsnet app. This thread has given you far more stress than your actual problem😂😂
I haven't read it all btw, just your responses and it's given me a good laugh. But then I worked in (UK)banking for 40 odd years so knew exactly what you were on about right from the off. You must have felt like you were in some parallel universe earlier this afternoon.

Why is there absolutely no way to access money?

Answer: You were foolish enough not to set up any alternative way of accessing money.

Own it.

Hope it never happens to you! And you've no money to pay for anything.

I agree tbh. I keep about £20-30 cash in the house for emergencies just in case.

She had cash. Cash is useless if you want to pay for something online though!

Not quite as she could have given it to the person who has lent the money and asked them to pay and avoided the awkwardness of asking to borrow money

True, but wouldn't you have an additional card (ie, a credit card) for emergency/ occasional use? I'm sure most people have those. It really pays to have a Plan B as many people in Sainsburys found out yesterday.

Sashamalia · 17/03/2024 15:33

Do a lot of people on here use credit cards?

Out of interest.

I personally don't know anyone that uses a credit card, except one person

Most people I know seem to all be of the opinion that they are a fools game, designed to get you into debt

I put all my day to day spending, work expenses, food shopping etc on an Amex card that gives me cashback. Credit card also offer Section 75 protection for items over a certain amount. I pay it off every month so I don't accrue interest. Its not difficult to manage if you are sensible and not use a credit card as a lottery win :-)

Glad you are sorted OP, I have read the thread and I'm glad I don't bank with BOI :-)
