AIBU for not wanting to sleep in the garden

Sounds a bit obvious when you put it like that 🤣 but opinions welcome. Being intentionally vague on age genders etc as SIL is on Mumsnet.

YABU - suck it up and sleep in the damn tent
YANBU - the only thing I like to bring camping is a hotel room

We’re a mixed family but have been together a while (5years) and we have a big family get together coming up over Easter hols and it’s myself, partner, and a bio kid each, attending. Hosted by my partners parents.

Lots of family coming from a very drivable distance but we are not - at least 3h drive one way and it’s very rural so no airbnbs etc nearby we have always just stayed over at the hosts house and it’s been good.

we got told today that because “older family members are coming over and they want to drink and have to take priority” we have to set up a tent in the garden instead of having an actual bed, hot water etc. I’m thinking … nope 👎 That sounds like my personal definition of hell, and just no. I am just keen to make our polite excuses, however partner thinks we should still go.

I’ve suggested they go themselves but they think it would cause “drama and speculation” about our relationship if they go and I don’t (tbf it would) and offend them if we decline because they told us about this months ago.

Fuck this shit indeed! I'm N Scotland with family up North and would I fuck camp in this weather!
Especially to make space for more local people.
Took caravan once during Easter, only survived cos we left heater on!
In a tent? Nope. We're still not passed the risk of snow!
There are no hotels where we go, just horrendously overpriced holiday cottages.
Enjoy your cosy bed OP!

to concur - fuck that shit. I’m staying home

Excellent choice OP! How has your DP taken the news?

a bit sulkily however I am now actively encouraging partner to go and camp in the tent. 😁

Well if he thinks it's such a great idea then he definitely should and take the DC with him. You can use the opportunity to "do some things around house" like watching TV and eating his Easter Eggs Grin

Encourage him even more. In fact insist upon it. Maybe he'll start telling his parents fuck that shit next time.

Snowfall is set to return to the coast of Scotland by March 23 as the latest weather maps have shown flurries of weather hitting the country by next weekend.

We don’t mind camping but I’d decline at Easter. My kids have been asking when we can camp as we haven’t done for a few years and they want to go this year. I said definitely not Easter as it’s far too early, but even when it’s later it can be cold overnight. May half term is our preferred time. Often warmer than the summer up north!! You’d definitely need an electric hook up to a heater for the tent and for them to have set it all up for you before you arrive. Would need to be a decent air bed as well.

CadyEastman · 17/03/2024 18:15

Minus 2.2. That's hilarious. I hope he shivers all night Grin

JuniperKeats · 17/03/2024 18:56

I think you might be too ill to travel that day……….

Gettingbysomehow · 17/03/2024 19:00

I've camped in all weather's but unless you have the right kit it will be horrible.

Sennelier1 · 17/03/2024 19:02

I hate it if I have to go outside to use the bathroom! I would rather sleep on the kitchen floor if that's what's needed!

DisabledDemon · 17/03/2024 19:09

Nope. Did camping once in my teens and swore never again. Apart from anything else, my back wouldn't take it (can you say something similar?).

mandlerparr · 17/03/2024 19:11

I don't know about anyone else, but if someone told me I should come to their place, bring a tent and set it up in the garden I would assume they were passively aggressively telling me to not come.
That does not sound like an actual invitation to me.

Good call, we are on the South coast and it's far too cold to camp this time of year unless you have a tent with a stove! We had 12 staying over at new year and managed for everyone to stay in the house in a bed with some thought and organisation!

Only other thought is you stay in one if the houses of the family living locally....

SquareCrumpets · 17/03/2024 19:38

Camping at that time of year can be great fun IF AND ONLY IF you have the right kit.

And the right kit is expensive. You have made the right choice!

Judecb · 17/03/2024 19:48

Just how remote is this place. Could you pre-book a taxi or drive to a hotel even if its 30 minutes away?

The OP has already said she's now not going.

SuperBlondie28 · 17/03/2024 20:04

I slept in a tent in my mum's garden in the North West . At Easter. Wasn't cold at all. It was a few years back. Hubby like a radiator though.

NamingConundrum · 17/03/2024 20:17

Camped in height of summer, south west. Had been all day in t shirts and shorts it was that warm. Fucking froze that night despite a sleeping bag, leggings, joggers, long sleeved top and jumper. Might have been better if had a mattress rather than roll mat but either way it was god awful.

I've had a similar experience in Cornwall in August! Freak low temperatures overnight for a couple of nights and hadn't packed all season gear because well you know, it was Cornwall in August. Always make sure I have too many things to keep us warm now.

RockyRogue1001 · 17/03/2024 20:42

You're cool, OP. 😎

I'd hate it too, and I like camping!

Just make sure he learns the now immortalised words of Captain Scott to cite to the kids when he pops to the loo… ‘I’m just going outside and I may be some time.’

Ineke · 18/03/2024 07:32

Hot water bottles will be needed. Also, your back maybe wouldn’t take an air bed if you needed an excuse. Enjoy your night off!
