My son's school has an all glass isolation room in the hall with three desks, children are put there as punishment? Teachers and students walking passed

OP posts:
ThinWomansBrain · 14/03/2024 23:51

presumably it means people can observe when walking past, and 1:1 supervision is not required

ballybean · 14/03/2024 23:52

Sorry should have said they are secondary so don't need 1:1

OP posts:
WhateverMate · 14/03/2024 23:53

You haven't given your thoughts/reasons on why it should be removed, other than it's 'outdated'.

Why do you think that?

TeaAndTattoos · 14/03/2024 23:54

It’s probably so the teachers and other staff can see them and watch what they are doing without putting themselves at risk of getting hurt if they were to stay in the room with them.

ThinWomansBrain · 14/03/2024 23:58

even if secondary, putting a disruptive or violent child in a room with no windows where no one can see what is going on doesn't sound particularly sensible.
If there's three desks, one child could bully or be aggressive to another.
Less chance of that happening if the space can be observed.

ballybean · 14/03/2024 23:59

I think it's humiliating for them. They aren't put there because they are a danger. They are put there if messing in class, distracting others etc

I know this is a radical thought but if they don’t like the thought of being humiliated they could behave.

ballybean · 15/03/2024 00:01

I understand a dangerous child needs to be held somewhere until parents/police arrive, this is just common misbehaviour, no danger

OP posts:
SalviaDivinorum · 15/03/2024 00:02

So what sanctions would you suggest for misbehaviour?

Then perhaps they can stop misbehaving.

I find it degrading and humiliating. My son hasn't been in it. I thought he was joking when he told me.

Panopticon, it’s a social and psychological control method in penal colonies from the 18th century. So yes, very appropriate for children at school according to mumsnet. What’s next? Stocks?

Detention, suspension, extra homework, report card, withheld from activities??

Mumsnet is fucking hilarious. Bring back caning?

UpsideLeft · 15/03/2024 00:04

I suppose that's the point

To be made to feel degraded and humiliated so so you'll never step out of line and have to back into the

'Box of Shame'

some would consider that, after all do we want a better behaved society would likely be their reasoning ?

Gymrabbit · 15/03/2024 00:04

I suspect around 10 teachers are leaving my school over the next few months due to the children’s behaviour.
well done to this school for doing something that might help stem the utter chaos currently in schools.

UpsideLeft · 15/03/2024 00:04

But yes it absolutely needs to be removed

smooththecat · 15/03/2024 00:05

OP, you won’t get anywhere. Anything a school does is correct. Anything a teacher does is incorrect. It’s all very logical.

ballybean · 15/03/2024 00:05

I find it so funny how I mentioned this to my group of friends and they were all shocked. I mention it here and of course it's totally acceptable!

We can just starting hitting kids again then, if they don't want to get a smack, they just have to behave!

Yes because methods like the panopticon have been shown to work well 🤔

Copied from google

Why did the Panopticon fail?
The archaic Panopticon design creates a physical environment that is damaging to the physical and mental health of prisoners and operationally dangerous for correctional staff. The grim conditions inside the roundhouse include persistent, insufferable noise-levels; extreme temperatures and poor ventilation…
