To feel sorry for the Tories?

The Conservative Party are a British institution. The most successful political party in the democratic world. They're going through a bad time at the moment and have been dealt a bad hand. They inherited a global financial crash which the western world is still to recover from and then a once in a lifetime pandemic which has further crippled the economy. Now there's wars in Gaza and Ukraine. Really unfortunate circumstances for them to operate in.

It looks like they're going to get a really bloody nose in the next election. Starmer has taken the centre ground and now Reform are starting to steal their MPs as well as voters. Now even their biggest donor is caught up in a scandal. When it rains it pours.

How can they recover from this? Can they recover from this?

The Tories are the great survivors but it's hard to see how they can win the next election, or maybe even the one after that.

The transformative educational reforms under Michael Gove
Levelling up - all the funding that has been directed to the regions as a result of this, the left behind areas
City mayors

I could go on but it'll feel like a Life of Brian sketch. What have the Tories ever done for us? But i'm not saying there weren't missteps. The Truss budget is still in the minds of voters as it's hit them in the wallet.

You are definitely having us on!

I feel sorry for the ordinary people whose lives have been made unnecessarily hard by the Tory’s being in power these last 13 years.

Chylka · 13/03/2024 15:58

And they’re “great survivors” in the way that cockroaches are great survivors.

Piggywaspushed · 13/03/2024 15:58

The transformative educational reforms under Michael Gove

Laughing my head off at that one.

GoodAfternoonGoodEveningAndGoodnight · 13/03/2024 15:59

🤣🤣🤣
Yeah, that's all I've got.
YABU, unless you're just having a laugh and if so, well played

I've not RTFT but surely this is satire?

The fact that you're listing Brexit as a positive says it all, really.

Maybe go to a left behind area and ask how things are going? Because there's a lorry load of broken promises there.

Yeah except most of the stuff you've listed wasn't in any way beneficial - so you have missed the point of that Life Of Brian sketch a bit.
It's hard to pick out the most laughable - but "levelling up" is probably the biggest load of bollocks of all of them.

gocompare · 13/03/2024 16:01

What even is levelling up? Can anyone explain to me what this is because it looks to me like we have levelled down.

Food banks can't keep up. Rents and mortgage rates through the roof. Can't get a GP appointment.

MarkWithaC · 13/03/2024 16:01

Hahahaha
No.

'Achieved Brexit'? What sort of 'achievement' is it looking like so far, would you say?

'Trade deals achieved post-Brexit' Oh yes, all the amazing trade deals that the world's major nations were going to be beating down our door to make.

'One of the fastest Covid 19 vaccine roll outs, achieved outside of the EU' Pity about the death toll, the Downing St parties, Barnard Castle, Michelle Mone...

'The transformative educational reforms under Michael Gove' Um. State schools have no art/music/drama provision. For one.

'Levelling up - all the funding that has been directed to the regions as a result of this, the left behind areas' And isn't the centre of Hull looking marvellous these days? And I'm sure Bedford (off the top of my head) will be delighted to hear that its problems are basically solved.

'City mayors' The greatest mistake Londoners made (and I'm a Londoner and I love my fellow Londoners) was voting in Johnson because they thought it'd be a laugh. He was the Trojan Horse: the Tory it was OK to like if you didn't like Tories. And look where we've ended up and what horrors have happened along the way.

I mean, if you're on a wind-up, you need to try harder.

I do too, with the rather obvious exception of their voters, who sadly deserve it.

WelshSmog · 13/03/2024 16:03

I only read title and the answer is hell no 🤷🏻‍♀️

SomersetTart · 13/03/2024 16:03

In a previous post from OP.

User135644 · 28/09/2022 13:29
I've lived here all my life l, have all my family and friends here but I feel desperate to get out now.

Brexit was national self harm in itself (and has made it harder to leave) but I am done with Tory island. They have destroyed everything over the last 12 years.

Had it now. Country heading for collapse.

Jovacknockowitch · 13/03/2024 16:04

AH yes, poster seems familiar now.

SomersetTart · 13/03/2024 16:04

User135644 · 28/09/2022 13:34

I can't stand what is happening. The Tories, the super rich and the billionaire press barons have corrupted everything and destroyed the country.

I have an English cousin who I never see but she happened to be in town a couple of years ago so we met up. I'm in Ireland so would only be vaguely aware of Gove. My cousin is generally a chilled out person and works as a teacher but when Gove came up in conversation the red mist descended with her. I'd say she would have been first in line for throwing stuff at him had an opportunity arisen.

placemats · 13/03/2024 16:10

Do I feel sorry for a party that's been in power for 14 years and has done nothing but run the country into the ground?

Hell no!

IClaudine · 13/03/2024 16:10

What is the point of this thread @User135644 ?

I know you might be having a laugh, but in truth none of this is a laugh. People's lives have been utterly trashed by the Tories. Just look at some of the despair on the COL threads, for example.

Achieved Brexit? You mean achieved the task of making trade with our our biggest, most afluent, ready, willing and on the bloody door step trading partners a fucking nightmare.

Trade deals achieved post Brexit would not have been needed (see above)! Trade deals post Brexit are simply a panacea to distract from the fact we have shot ourselves well and truly in the foot. Anyway, are you referring to some half cocked schemes to sell cheddar cheese to Vietnam or flood the country with cheap, steroid induced Australian lamb?

Ask the people in the North what they think of levelling up so far. It hasn't happened, it isn't going to happen. It's worth noting that the "levelling down", which some might call utter destruction, of those areas began with Thatcher.

The roll out of Covid vaccines was not dependent upon the EU and did not require its authorisation. Every member country was at perfect liberty to dictate its own programme. The notion that Boris was hero is a complete myth. I believe other countries took more time because they were scrutinising the safety of the vaccine.

Lol at Brexit and levelling up being presented as Tory achievements!

If those are their achievements, I hate to think what their failures might look like!!

CHEESEY13 · 13/03/2024 16:14

This bunch of unfunny clowns wag judgmental fingers at those on Universal Credit telling them claiming pitiful benefits is a "lifestyle choice." Ha!
It is NEVER a choice and it certainly has nothing to do with benefitting anyone.
Furthermore, this recent Budget has gone out of the way to shaft pensioners. Well, the retired can hardly protest by going on strike, can they?

Jovacknockowitch · 13/03/2024 16:17

And another thing OP, I STILL can't get the chlorinated chicken I was promised would be compulsory for me to eat post Brexit, so don't talk to me about Tory achievements.

Pinscher · 13/03/2024 16:18

The Tories haven't been in charge for several years, they were all thrown out and replaced with flagrant ceiminals who have fleeced the country of funds and sold off our assets to their mates. Proper conservatives at least foster business (and no I've never been a tory voter) but they've done everything but this.
