To feel sorry for the Tories?

The Conservative Party are a British institution. The most successful political party in the democratic world. They're going through a bad time at the moment and have been dealt a bad hand. They inherited a global financial crash which the western world is still to recover from and then a once in a lifetime pandemic which has further crippled the economy. Now there's wars in Gaza and Ukraine. Really unfortunate circumstances for them to operate in.

It looks like they're going to get a really bloody nose in the next election. Starmer has taken the centre ground and now Reform are starting to steal their MPs as well as voters. Now even their biggest donor is caught up in a scandal. When it rains it pours.

How can they recover from this? Can they recover from this?

The Tories are the great survivors but it's hard to see how they can win the next election, or maybe even the one after that.

Would agree, but the chief beneficiaries from "loose fiscal policy" have been the tax evading Tories and their "free" market billionaire sponsors......

Loved this response! (And am also an old fart).

Just to clarify there are some individuals within the party that I don't feel sorry for and they were self-serving.

But the party as a grand institution in the UK, they go back way before Labour. Even hearing Fuck the Tories being sung at football matches and at gigs. It's sad to see, it's not looking good for the election.

They "go back way before Labour" because ordinary working men who were not property owners didn't even get the vote until well into the 19th century.

I despair.

I quite like Rishi, but the day the Tories become a minority party I'll be laughing all the way to the next election.

Which will probably be at the beginning of next year with the way things are going in this country.

Jenicas · 31/05/2024 12:19

Something some Conservative voters don't seem to be getting is that the party is no longer "Conservative" - it's been hijacked by neocons and right wing libertarians who want 19th century, robber baron style economics imposed by force. Hence the throwing out of the Tory Remainers.

For example it would be highly beneficial to the economy and population as a whole if house building rapidly increased leading to an overall lower (or at least not increasing) house prices. Why because rather than spending a large proportion of your income on a mortgage for a non productive asset you could either spend it (creating jobs) or invest it (pensions etc) creating investments in the wider economy

How many houses would it take to be built to reduce prices? imho you can never build enough to achieve that, construction materials cost x amount, build more, demand goes up, house prices rise as does demand for land... price goes UP... house price goes UP!!!

Desirable houses in nice locations will still hold their value, in order to do so, that needs a supply of cheaper tier houses.... but not too cheap!!!

Cornwall has built over 10% more houses than it was supposed to build, has done nothing for prices or for rents, infact, they've both gone up, as has the population of the county.

What we need is more homes for affordable rent, that will drive down private rentals, force more LLs to sell and tenants will move into council housing, they 'll pay less rent, more money in the local economy win win!!!

(but we need the supply of council housing first)

Desecratedcoconut · 31/05/2024 15:12

Where would we get all the skilled labour to build all these extra houses? The labour shortage is already dire. Meanwhile, imaginary sparkies are doing double duty while they also prop up all these new green energy technologies in the manifesto pipeline.

If Labour win ,Kier Starmer will wake up on the morning of July 5th , after Labour celebrating a win ,with the same problems Sunak has now.

Two wars, the whole transgender issue, strikes, NHS waiting lists , the economy , immigration, the boats crossing the channel etc etc.

Jenicas · 03/06/2024 07:31

No reason not for vote for them...or for any other party. The Tories are responnsible for mass corruption, the failure that is Brexit and for the consolidating of a failed economic system.

Jenicas · 03/06/2024 07:33

Not to worry - while flapping their gums about the problem of immigration, our Tory overlords are busy waving through immigrants into the North of England.....

Well thats stating the bleeding obvious!!!

But perhaps Labour will have a different approach?

Lets face it, after 14 years, has anything, anything at all, got better? every public service i can think off has got worse!!!

I’ve no idea to be honest and I don’t know who to vote for

Well you have a clear choice of more of the same or giving someone else a go.

And if you truly have no idea maybe try checking out the labour party website.

Don’t that already, I’m waiting for the manifesto to come out.

But how is Labour going to stop the boats ? Smash the criminal gangs ? How will that happen than ? I’m sure other European countries have tried that and been unsuccessful. They don’t know where they operate from and it’s very difficult to find the smugglers.

Recruit more teachers and reduce the NHS waiting lists ?Well how will they do that ?

Keri Starmer hasn’t actually said how Labour would achieve these promises?

But I agree I don’t want five more years of the same

Paul2023 · 03/06/2024 09:04

The Tories will cut immigration down to the tens of thousands? Piss off , they promised that back in 2010 and have done ever since !

Infact immigration has basically trebled under the Tories! And this is legal migration.

Labour actually sent more illegal immigrants back when they were in government than the current government did.

Paul2023 · 03/06/2024 09:40

The Conservatives have had how many PMs? Five in 14 years ? No stability, no consistency. We’ve had god knows how many justice secretary’s, NHS secretary’s and all the others.

We were told at every election that the conservatives would cut immigration down to the tens of thousands, when in fact it’s almost trebled under them.

Under Labour net migration was around 250k per year, in 2022 it was what 700k ?

Labour actually sent more illegal immigrants back than the Conservatives have done.

The conservatives supposedly the party of law and order yet lost around 20k police officers and closed about 20 prisons.

The whole woke transgender/ sexual
identity has gone mad in the last 10 years or so.

NHS dentists and GP appointments non existent in some areas of the country.

So I can’t see why they’d get my vote again.

Jenicas · 03/06/2024 11:27

Yes - the Tories are allowing immigrants in while making noise about stopping them.

Paul2023 · 03/06/2024 11:43

I don’t think Sunak is a bad guy, but he’s in a party that doesn’t work and they need to step away from government and create a credible opposition.

Yet he governs a party which does bad things…

I don' think he's a good guy, because it has become clear that he will say whatever he thinks will get him into power and keep him there. It was obvious during the campaign against Truss, when he thought that going ridiculously right-wing was the way to go, and he's still so scared of the right wing of his party that he's desperate to pander to them and do whatever keeps them happy. He's also learnt only too well from Boris how much easier it is to lie when in an awkward situation. He doesn't actually give a shit for what is good for the country.

Zyq · 04/06/2024 09:14

By far the best way to stop people smugglers is to take away their market by offering safe passage combined with a quick and efficient asylum-processing system. It won't completely stop the traffic but it will massively cut it down.

He has been an active part of that party since 2015
