To be seriously considering leaving this country?

I've lived here all my life l, have all my family and friends here but I feel desperate to get out now.

Brexit was national self harm in itself (and has made it harder to leave) but I am done with Tory island. They have destroyed everything over the last 12 years.

Had it now. Country heading for collapse.

We are off in 5 years all being well.
DH has dual EU/UK nationality and our work is mobile so once we gets the kids settled into HE or jobs and certain elderly family members have passed we are off

Dotjones · 28/09/2022 13:31

Bye! It'll be interesting to see if more people follow suit. Despite this country being considered a shithole by many, we still have a massive net migration inwards.

Acheyknees · 28/09/2022 13:31

Where are you thinking of going? Do you have skills that are in demand abroad? Will you get a visa?

looeeea · 28/09/2022 13:32

We're off in 4 years (all going to plan)

Frazzled2207 · 28/09/2022 13:34

yanbu. I think the same. But due to brexit it’s very difficult.

Netherlands could be a possibility and is attractive but we’d need to get on a citizenship path which means renouncing your British one. Pretty serious.

This is why I'm at the considering stage. I'm going to have to give it thought.

I can't stand what is happening. The Tories, the super rich and the billionaire press barons have corrupted everything and destroyed the country.

with the pound being so low, its a good time if you get a good job in the uk, buy up cheap property and still maintain the bulk of your assets in another country. Some people from my home country living in the uk are not bothered by the events in the UK at all, why should they worry when the bulk of their assets are not in GBP? As long as they keep their jobs, its a good opportunity for them.

QuietNeighbour · 28/09/2022 13:37

I want to leave too but I don’t have the first idea how I can or where to go

orangeisthenewpuce · 28/09/2022 13:43

YANBU. Its your business if you want to leave. So just go if that's what you want to do.

LadyWithLapdog · 28/09/2022 13:43

We’re planning to leave in 4 years. All going well we’ll retire early.

SimonaRazowska · 28/09/2022 13:45

You can join all the people who were going it leave if Brexit would happen Wink

It's easy talk

You won't leave. But I guess you know that. Out of interest, what country would you like to live in if you could choose anywhere?

Nothing will change here, sadly, it's a total shit show, I agree, but all that happens is that people get angry on social Media. But I can't see a utopia anywhere else either (and I have tried Grin , emigrated 4x but now feel too old and tired)

underneaththeash · 28/09/2022 13:46

No more threads about this - it's bloody tedious - stop repeating yourself.

Go if you want to.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 28/09/2022 13:46

Do turn the lights out.

spuddy56 · 28/09/2022 13:48

We are making plans to leave which has always been a possibility, now it's definite within the next couple of years. Both work in roles on the shortage occupation lists. Partner is European.

Mumoblue · 28/09/2022 13:49

I’m going back to Scotland, but less out of being disgruntled with the way England is going (though I’m certainly not thrilled about it) and more out of the fact I literally can’t afford to live down here any more and I have to go back to where my family is. (I’m not Scottish my family just live there). The future certainly feels quite uncertain at the moment, and I wouldn’t blame anyone for deciding to gamble on somewhere else.

TwinkleChristmas · 28/09/2022 13:49

Goodbyeeee 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻

Cosyblankethottea · 28/09/2022 13:52

Name changed for this one. We are going to leave too in due course. Managed to get DH Swiss nationality after lots of stress. We have lived and worked here all our working lives and paid 40 per cent plus tax throughout. All our close friends with European nationalities are also planning to leave. All dual citizens. In fact, we all have a plan for our DCs to attend universities in Europe, not UK.

Straight after Brexit, first wave of friends left. Now suddenly lots more are leaving. I am worried that by the time we can actually go, the pound will be so low all the years of work/saving will have amounted to nothing. So might actually move sooner rather than later.
I think a lot of Europeans are leaving but people from Asia will replace. So net net UK will be OK.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 28/09/2022 13:54

You can leave if you wish to, no one will stop you.

LadyWithLapdog · 28/09/2022 13:56

We have a EU citizenship for the kids and also encouraging them to study abroad.

WallaceinAnderland · 28/09/2022 13:56

Interested to hear where you will go. Will you need a work permit?

newnamethanks · 28/09/2022 13:56

I suggest you wait until the pound recovers or your dreams may sadly be dented.

VioletToes · 28/09/2022 13:57

I don't blame you OP.

It's an utter shitshow there looking at from afar.

I spent 10 years in the UK. Submitted my citizenship application about a week before the Brexit vote. After that I knew it wasn't somewhere I wanted to stay.

LizzieSiddal · 28/09/2022 13:58

We’re due to retire at 60 in three years time. We too will be off, I absolutely hate what the Torys have done to this country and the voters who have enabled it.

Cosyblankethottea · 28/09/2022 14:00

Lots of people have eg Irish ancestry or Eastern European etc - many people can access EU citizenship if they look into it carefully. Always worth doing before children reach 18, to keep options open.

TheLeadbetterLife · 28/09/2022 14:00

Already left in 2019 due to Brexit, this shitshow was on the cards from the 2017 election.
