To feel sorry for the Tories?

The Conservative Party are a British institution. The most successful political party in the democratic world. They're going through a bad time at the moment and have been dealt a bad hand. They inherited a global financial crash which the western world is still to recover from and then a once in a lifetime pandemic which has further crippled the economy. Now there's wars in Gaza and Ukraine. Really unfortunate circumstances for them to operate in.

It looks like they're going to get a really bloody nose in the next election. Starmer has taken the centre ground and now Reform are starting to steal their MPs as well as voters. Now even their biggest donor is caught up in a scandal. When it rains it pours.

How can they recover from this? Can they recover from this?

The Tories are the great survivors but it's hard to see how they can win the next election, or maybe even the one after that.

The Tories are the great survivors

So are cockroaches.

But to be fair, one of those has a certain charm about it. The other not so much.

AgnesX · 13/03/2024 14:59

My heart bleeds for them (not) They deserve everything they get.

Their lack of morality beggars belief.

Winston Churchill led us through World War Two as a Conservative Prime Minister.

He was racist too. Notice a pattern OP?

They're fucking my paramedic dh over and making our family life difficult so I have zero sympathy for them! They also go against everything I stand for. If they're so sad they can spend some of the £3k they taxed my dh in ONE MONTH to buy themselves something to feel better 🙄

How on earth did they tax him 3k. Paramedics (who are IMHO vastly underpaid superheroes, we have needed them several times and every one has been beyond amazing) I didn't think even earnt 3k in a month

Newbutoldfather · 13/03/2024 15:01

We were here before when Blair came to power.

These Tories haven’t looked after the economy, the NHS or education. And they have shown a venal and unpleasant streak.

Simultaneously, Starmer have made Labour electable again, so it is going to be a complete Tory trouncing,

I am not sure people are very enthusiastic about Labour, so they will need to achieve something to get more than one term. But the Tories also need to rediscover what they are actually about as, at the moment, they are all over the place.

Mummame222 · 13/03/2024 15:03

This is the best thread all year. Hilarious!

Winston Churchill led us through World War Two as a Conservative Prime Minister.

The Churchill who was eating lobster at The Savoy whilst millions of ordinary people were on rations and who hasn't been Prime Minister for 79 years?

The minute the war was over the people of Britain who, because they knew what real hardship and sacrifice was, wanted a government who would make a fair Britain where everyone was looked after not just the rich.

They voted in a Labour government.

Echobelly · 13/03/2024 15:04

Nope, not in the least sorry for them. They have utterly ruined this country in order to settle an internal spat about EU membership, they have made a decision that rather than helping anyone, they're going to concentrate on policies to hurt and harm vulnerable groups like refugees, disabled people and people on low incomes. I cannot have enough contempt for that kind of politics, I can't think of anything they are doing that is truly positive in terms of supporting ordinary people. They stir up pointless, devisive 'culture wars' to distract from their incompetence which will hopefully fade away when they are gone but their destructive legacy will continue to hurt innocent people.

Though they still do plenty to help those who need it least and refuse to countenance that those people can afford to pay more to help society - instead they concentrate in taking money, far less than they could get from even slightly more taxation of the super wealthy that wouldn't even make a dent on their lifestyles, from the poorest in society which is not only cruel but expensive and stupid because it then results in higher costs of poor mental and physical health.

I don’t think the OP is saying specifically that Labour caused the economic crash. It is true that the Tories ‘inherited’ the crash, in the sense that the crash had happened before they came to power and they came in and had to deal with its effects.

Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest that the OP was specifically blaming Labour for the global financial crash. Just that when the Tories have spent years blaming Labour for the conditions in the global financial system when they were in power, it's a bit rich to expect the electorate to cut them slack for the conditions in the global financial system buffeting the country during their own term in office.

Hate to break it to you OP but he died a long time ago. He wasn't always a Tory either.

Then quickly voted Churchill back in at the subsequent election.

They are the authors of their own misfortune, a stunning majority at the last election which was wasted. I agree that the pandemic and then the war in Ukraine created unique problems but this was never a gvt that believed in Conservative values of small state low tax high growth economy. They will be out of power for a decade.

Meanwhile we will have a re-run of the Tony Blair years, high spending globalist economics, continuing high immigration because they need low skilled, low wage labour. Our economy will continue to decline. Its a national scandal that the country has not a balance of payments surplus for 22 years. Our debt will continue to grow under Starmer.
Sadly Reform offer no real alternative the party lacks focus and attracts the loony element. The media is happy to criticise the far right while happily ignoring the much more dangerous far left. People are happy to call themselves socialist without really understanding what it means. Would any of them really want to live in any of the socialist/communist countries of the world?
We are going to see increasing social discord and division and increasing hatred towards those who don't share our views. I'm glad I'm old and near the end of my life. I feel truly sorry for young people and the lack of opportunity this country offers

Comtesse · 13/03/2024 15:11

5 different PMs in such quick turnover - surely unprecedented. Can’t say Churchill would have stood for that….

TisTheDarnSeason · 13/03/2024 15:13

Churchill is all you got, OP? So 80 years ago they had a leader who (ignoring all the highly questionable aspects of his life, career and personality) proved himself to be a decent figurehead at a time of national crisis.

And since then?

Come on. If you're going to have this little joke with us you're going to have to do better than a cigar-chomping, gin-swilling, adulterous racist as the 150-year high point of the Party Born To Rule.

IntermittentFarting · 13/03/2024 15:15

Are you on a wind up, OP? We're practically a third world country now because of the cunting Tories. People die waiting for ambulances and even in the a&e waiting room. Working couples can afford houses for their families.
They should all be locked up, especially David fucking Cameron. Bunch of cunts.

Doubt it! For all Churchills other faults, I can't see him having rolled out the red carpet for ex Nazi secret service agents as Johnson did with the Lebedevs either.

Piggywaspushed · 13/03/2024 15:17

I don't think you know your political history as well as you think you do, OP. When exactly do you think the Conservative and Unionist Party was formed?

And there's a reason why the Labour party didn't exist once- you know , to do with withholding the vote and representation from working men...

Then quickly voted Churchill back in at the subsequent election.

Labour won by a landslide and lost by to the Tories by a very small margin.

This was after a period in which the Labour party had fulfilled all their promises including the formation of the NHS, funding the building of council houses, reforming childrens services and creating the national parks. In six years.

What have the Tories done for us in the last 14 years?
