To think Center Parcs should be ashamed of this

I think it may have been deleted now, but not before Center Parcs hid or deleted comments pointing out the stereotyping and misogyny of this Facebook post...
One comment I saw said mum's not keeping up because of all the shopping, cooking, washing and organising she had to before the family got to sodding Center Parcs in the first place. And she's riding a shite bike they've given her

To think Center Parcs should be ashamed of this

I don't think there is anything to be offended by. It's just the kids who are happy to be in front being proud that they are in front. It's not saying anything derogatory about Mum

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 12/03/2024 17:42

So showing 2 girls excitedly out cycling and calling back in a way children are want to do is sexist and inhibits women wanting to do sport despite it being 2 GIRLS cycling?

The more sexist comments are those suggesting mum is behind because she's tired from doing the housework, the cooking etc!

SeaAndCakes · 12/03/2024 17:43

Hmm so the "joke" is that mums can't keep up with physical activities? Feels a bit mean and stereotypical. Have they done the same ad with "keep up dad"?

I quite like the text above the image. Why not stick with that idea: that people go at different speeds? 🤷‍♀️

GwinGwyn · 12/03/2024 17:45

Maybe the movie on the night before was Gone Girl and mum is deliberately lagging behind because she’s waiting to make a break for it…

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 12/03/2024 17:45

It's not even making her the butt of a joke

It's not like she's a fat woman in unsuitable clothes, huffing and puffing at the back as her sporty family leave her behind, laughing at her inadequacy. She's a happy, healthy, outdoorsy woman keeping pace with her family and having fun

The tagline isn't meant as a joke. It's meant to invoke memory making and comments you recognise from your own child

Thedance · 12/03/2024 17:47

moonfacer · 12/03/2024 17:20

So what do you think the Keep up Mum is saying?

I think it's saying that the children who happen to be girls are having a good time and have learned how to ride a bike and now able to lead.
The mother isn't lagging behind she is right behind the kids as is Dad. It isn't derogatory.

OkPedro · 12/03/2024 17:57

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 12/03/2024 16:36

Is it because the child on the left is clearly shouting, "you're all a bunch of cocking arseholes!" at the others?

I'm sure it's what the Mum is really thinking 😆

IntermittentFarting · 12/03/2024 18:00

But mum and dad are both behind. Its only Mum that the children are interested in having keep up with them, though.
So, if anything, this ad is a bit anti-dad.

crumblingschools · 12/03/2024 18:03

Why is it mum being asked to keep up, why wasn’t it come on mum and dad?

Why is it mum being asked to keep up, why wasn’t it come on mum and dad?

Because its trying to encourage Mums to book a center parks break and have a similar experience with their children perhaps

baileys6904 · 12/03/2024 18:07

As a woman, am I meant to be offended at every negative comment aimed towards a female now? I'm all for the sisterhood but fucking hell.

I'm over weight, old, have helped raise 2 awesome females who are making their mark on the world in phenomenal ways, and I have not got the slightest huff about that post.

We are trying to get to an unrealistic state where nothing can be said that can be construed as negative. The world's not like that, shit happens. Surely learning how address challenge is a more important lesson

crumblingschools · 12/03/2024 18:10

@Poetnojo but why not parents?

Minfilia · 12/03/2024 18:14

I just see it as a small child who has learned to ride a bike and is biking ahead of her parents.

There is literally nothing offensive about it.

Bigteamug · 12/03/2024 18:14

I always ride at the back so I can see that everyone else is safe.

Poetnojo · 12/03/2024 18:15

crumblingschools · 12/03/2024 18:10

@Poetnojo but why not parents?

Because they are trying to encourage Mums to book?
Maybe they have other ads where dad's are encouraged to book? This is not the only ad ever released by CP

LoveSandbanks · 12/03/2024 18:15

I’ve been to centerparcs more than once and I can assure all of you that I was the one shouting keep up at all the others

i think this is bang out of order the assumption that mum is going to be the one lagging behind, holding up
the man and the bright young things. Feck OFF.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 12/03/2024 18:16

HelloMiss · 12/03/2024 16:40

Yes, me too!

Same. I was always the tail end on family bike rides. Not offended by it at all

scorpiogirly · 12/03/2024 18:17

Okthen100 · 12/03/2024 16:34

Are people just offended at EVERYTHING these days?

Quite.

Moveoverdarlin · 12/03/2024 18:18

Centres Parcs should feel ashamed?? Eh? Oh give over, they should maybe feel that the advert has offended 0.4% percent of Mothers, but they don’t need to feel ashamed.

TheTimeIsNowMaybeNow · 12/03/2024 18:19

She's hardly lagging behind either, she's only slightly behind the bloke .

TheTimeIsNowMaybeNow · 12/03/2024 18:20

She looks far happier than dad as well with that smile on her face, he looks like hes about to have a wobble

LovelyTheresa · 12/03/2024 18:23

Okthen100 · 12/03/2024 16:34

Are people just offended at EVERYTHING these days?

Yes, they are. Truly pathetic, isn't it?

Zoobi · 12/03/2024 18:25

We live in a free market society... If you don't like it, don't go to Center Parcs.

Mumof2teens79 · 12/03/2024 18:25

Is is right to complain about the sexism of "keep up mum" while simultaneously pointing out that women do most of the housework?

But also do most of the holiday booking.
This would work equally well as keep up dad....but that's not their target audience and men probably wouldn't respond as warmly to it.

The idea is not negative. Mums aren't supposed to look at this/hear those words and feel bad that they can't keep up.....of course they can, but they are loving seeing their young kids ride off ahead.

In reality the first and last time we took/hired bikes at CP youngest DD got tired within 3 minutes and I ended up pushing her bike and mine to the lodge and leaving them there for the duration.
