To think Center Parcs should be ashamed of this

I think it may have been deleted now, but not before Center Parcs hid or deleted comments pointing out the stereotyping and misogyny of this Facebook post...
One comment I saw said mum's not keeping up because of all the shopping, cooking, washing and organising she had to before the family got to sodding Center Parcs in the first place. And she's riding a shite bike they've given her

Well, if you know what it is, I’m surprised you think any old insult is misogyny 🤷‍♀️

It’s a fairly innocuous ad. But, hand on heart, my first reaction to it was ‘urghhh’ when I read the caption. I’m clearly not alone in this as CP themselves pulled the ad in the face of criticism.

People disagree- sure. Some people are more relaxed. Some people are ok with a tiny dose of misogyny. Some people are obtuse.

What I object to is the “No there is no sexism here of any kind how dare you, you crazy feminist.” What’s with that?

And that stance seems to be the gateway to a bizarre ‘No the world is not sexist any more” view. Now that is bollocks. That any woman would defend that viewpoint is insane and, also, maddening.

I think most people, including me, are more closely aligned to your position than you think, apple but my goodness you have to agree to disagree sometimes.
And you are bandying the word "misogynist" about for the most spurious of reasons; not where people are actually hating on women for being women as you yourself define it.

Is this ad sexist or misogynist?
You and others: "possibly... could be seen that way"
Me and others: "probably not intentionally"

Are women slow or mothers less fun?
All of us: Hell no!

Our agreements are more important than our differences, surely? We'll smash it together, not separately, even if we approach it from different angles.

You've given me lots to think about, though.
Goodnight apple

Ok @LancashireTart . If it makes you feel better- yeah, I’m crazy, I need help.

Just read my previous post and try to see where I’m coming from.

If you’re arguing that the world isn’t sexist ‘any more’ I think possibly you need a reality check.

The world is sexist as fuck. Every tiny little pinprick of contempt for women is part of the bigger picture. For god’s sake open your eyes.

I know you want to argue - or at least to have a pop at me (as you seem all out of constructive points) but just have a think. I am patronising you, yes, but you seem to need it.

Have a good one.

I clearly stated: "Times have changed for the better, in the UK at least" and "It isn't perfect".

Yet again you're seeing things that aren't there. Your anger is getting the better of you.

HellWitYa · 13/03/2024 22:20

Corrrr this thread has brought out the professionally offended. No wonder we often get told we are hysterical.

Probably will get shot down for being called misogynistic for saying that, but if you're offended by the CP picture, then you must be offended a lot if the time in your life.

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 13/03/2024 22:30

I do love the “I’m not offended” protests from objectors. If you’re not offended, what’s the problem? You didn’t like the colour filter? The typography upsets you?

If it’s the meaning of the ad that you object to then obviously you’re offended.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 14/03/2024 00:03

This thread has gone down a batshit route

Frankly it would just be fodder for men wanting to call women mad

When someone is calling women brainless and stupid and all sorts just because they disagree with their opinion.

ODFOx · 14/03/2024 00:14

I was the one at the back when we went to Center Parcs. I honestly thought I was having a heart attack it was such hard work and my thighs were burning. My hire bike had a slightly buckled wheel so the brake was on for half of each revolution. They refused to refund. Never again!

Ramalangadingdong · 14/03/2024 03:52

LancashireTart · 12/03/2024 22:29

There isn't an issue. But evidently some people are wired to see things that simply don't exist in their desperation to find something offensive. It's pathetic.

Obviously CP thinks there is an issue as they have pulled the ad.

Ramalangadingdong · 14/03/2024 03:54

I am starting to wonder if Andrew Tate and his acolytes are on MN watch and invade any post that criticises the patriarchy and all its insidious ruses.

Tahinii · 14/03/2024 04:40

GreenAppleCrumble · 13/03/2024 21:12

But not misogynistic. The doormat reference is usually used in a defiant way of course, as in don’t be a doormat. Reject the patriarchy.

I disagree. Calling women lacking in intelligence for not seeing the sexism in the advert absolutely is misogynistic. The tone and wording in that post is 100% misogyny.

If we are calling out the ad and certain phrases (which I agree are misogynistic!), then we should call out MNers who do it too.

You really think they think there's an issue? They're bowing to pressure from few, but loud voices, and because they have judged pulling the ad to be the right move, not because they themselves believed it to be "wrong".
Pulling it is a pretty smart actually, because it has publicised this ad, this campaign and Center Parcs generally. No such thing as bad publicity.

Also, the very worst thing an organisation or person in the public eye can do is to be something-IST.

ChaosAndCrumbs · 14/03/2024 08:16

LancashireTart · 13/03/2024 21:05

Those examples are from the past. Times have changed for the better, in the UK at least. Fortunately, we now have laws for equality in place. It isn't perfect but it isn't helped by people like yourself desperately looking for something to be offended about.

There are still plenty of issues in the UK. Women tend to be told they’re making up or exaggerating medical issues, take the brunt of contraceptive responsibility, carry ‘mother’s load’, are less likely to be believed as rape victims but more likely to be taped, are more likely to be the victim in domestic abuse, are less likely to progress in their jobs, more likely to work part time, more likely to take on unpaid work and less likely to be in positions of power.

Jess Phillips recently read a list of 98 women killed by men in government and described growing weary that the issue seems to matter so little to government.
Guardian Article

It’s a lazy stereotype. It’s by no means the worst. I wouldn’t boycott for this advert, but I do think it’s something that deserves relooking at. It’s also just patently untrue to suggest all is good in the UK for women. It’s better than in many many countries, yes, and we should never forget that or stop trying to support our fellow women (and girls), but there are still issues here and to we have to tackle lazy stereotypes to get to the big issues.

Not really

Ads get pulled a lot because of a vocal minority

It's better to pull it to stop their campaigns of hate and also becomes good advertising as the ads make the news and people talk about them

See the M&S Christmas ad last year for example

Maybe we should ask colonel custard to sort it out?
