Maybe I'm overacting but I don't think I am. The other day I was at a cafe with my friend (31F) and I was pouting my lips when she looked at me and said 'that reminds me' and started applying chapstick. I was a bit confused by this but then I realised what she meant and I was very angry. But then yesterday we went out again and I can't remember the conversation but I stuck my teeth out in a funny way and she looked me up and down and said in a smug voice 'I need to book my dentist appointment' and she set a reminder in her calendar. Am I overreacting or is this not on? And how do I approach it without sounding paranoid?

Oh yes, I had a tail. Mine was the longest out of anyone <preens>.

DontLeanOnTheKeyboard · 04/03/2024 11:56

I also had my mum make me panteloons, like the old Victorian underwear, to go under my nice pinafore dress. Oh Jesus.

Trez1510 · 04/03/2024 13:35

I can't imagine I'm alone in seeing the similarity between today's Turkey teeth and our grandparents' perfectly aligned, dazzling white dentures.

Am I alone in this?

It’s just fashion, it comes and goes. And yes in the 80s it was thin over plucked eye brows and big hair. Christ we all had short hair with a rats tail tiny plait at the back at one point. Wandered round in ra ra skirts and leg warmers, wore blue eye shadow and heather shimmer lipstick.

i don’t think anyone views it with hilarity though, maybe you do. More nostalgia and an understanding it was the fashion at the time.

Mum asks 'when are you getting a boyfriend?'
You reply...'Giiive meee tiiiime'

RedMark · 04/03/2024 17:07

Odd thread. Even by Mumsnet standards.

I can’t even begin to understand what we were thinking, such a ludicrous fashion trend, 😂

It's surely a very weird stance to think that someone who hasn't had work done, is jealous of someone who has? They would have it if they wanted it and were jealous of it?!?
It can only be the other way round.
Person A isn't happy with their looks so has stuff done. Person B doesn't have work done because they are already happy with their looks.
It makes literally zero sense to say person B can be jealous of A.

Unless Person A wishes she had Person B's self confidence.

arethereanyleftatall · 04/03/2024 18:12

Well exactly @BirthdayRainbow
The op seems to think person B would be jealous of person A though.

Sweetpea1532 · 04/03/2024 18:21

On the back of the 'rat tail' hairdo.post..who remembers the age of the 'tendrils' ? Side bits of hair by our ears that we curled and sprayed with hairspray to within an inch of there lives?
And it appears a couple of the models are sticking their teeth out a bit🦷🫦😁

First-world moan. Just think about ladies in Israel and Palestine who are starving and freeing and sleeping out under the stars because their hoes have been bombed.

Dinkydo12 · 04/03/2024 19:06

Maybe she feels embarrassed when you pull these faces in public. Just giving you a hint to cut it out. Also sounds like you don't have a lot of self confidence.

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle
I once followed a woman round Asda because I was fascinated by her duck pout. She had tattooed caterpillar eyebrows as well.

@TheGreatGherkin

how rude of you.

did you really have nothing better to do??

poor woman, just minding her own business and having you gawping at her

Lillette · 04/03/2024 19:16

Maybe you feel a bit uncomfortable around her and it's a sort of nervousness... understandable and maybe think about where this friendship is going. You did say you felt she feels superior to you. Maybe you're right, go with your gut instinct. Time to not let her affect you in this way.

Laura0076 · 04/03/2024 19:17

zunchie · 03/03/2024 14:29

I think deep down with context she has always been somewhat jealous of me which makes it worse. Without trying to sound like I think I look so much better than her, she isn't the best looking so I feel like she's trying to put me down for some reason. But I honestly have no reason to think why.

That's such an awful thing to say about someone... you said your "friends" but it doesn't sound like a positive relationship for either of you.
Your appearances should have no bearing on your friendship what so ever.
I can't see how what ever you were doing was a pleasant experience... you'd be best off just not being friends anymore.
And be a bit kinder in future... beauty is in the eye of the beholder.... and commenting on someone's appearance In such a nasty way ... doesn't make you seem like a very kind person.... I'd rather look awful but know how to raise others up

Hmm. A young woman, living somewhere near me, has the most incredible makeup. Never seen her less than immaculate - she wears a lot of it, so perfectly done that it looks almost spray painted. I'm so fascinated by how she does it that I can't help staring at her!

She wears very tiny clothes on her slender, gym-honed body. I remember feeling like I had to look like a magazine photo all the time at her age; I neither pity nor despise her (though it was a lot of wasted time!) I'm just transfixed by the artistry.

Glasgowqueen · 04/03/2024 19:26

zunchie · 03/03/2024 13:50

Do you have to be so nasty! I don't remember why I was doing it I just was. And why would she say that to my face, even if she's thinking it. Deep down I think she has some sort of superiority complex towards me.

Overthinking/paranoia .

mrst3 · 04/03/2024 19:46

Surely this is a p*ss take 😳 🤔

SmileyClare · 04/03/2024 19:49

I think it’s a stretch to put questionable hair and clothes fashions you regretted from your teens in the same class as having your face injected and ceramic permanently cemented to all your teeth in your thirties?

Its not really a passing fashion that you’ll laugh about in later years. It’s a result of the over sexualised image obsessed social conditioning promoted by the media.

Back to the thread- I agree with @Laura0076 the friendship has turned toxic, particularly with your very misjudged accusatory message about jealousy…
all based on a passing comment. Confused

Its a bit like someone with anger issues throwing their drink at a person in the pub who looked at them “funny” ..
Unnecessary drama over a perceived slight.

Mememoo · 04/03/2024 19:51

Bloody hell people op was provably pulling a face to describe something or someone in there conversation, many people do it (I thought) I certainly do I'm very handsy and expressionable if that's a word lol when storytelling. It's called having abit of character/fun not full Jim Carey 🤣 but still and op ur friend either has dark/dry humour or it just genuinely reminded her not bcoz there's anything wrong with ur teeth or lips. If not I'm sure ud know by now if she was just bitchy!

therealcookiemonster · 04/03/2024 19:55

come on OP, don't leave us hanging.... did you return those glasses?

Peoplealwaysleavemespeechless · 04/03/2024 20:06

Wow 😂 best thing I've read all month 😂 vain self centred woman doesn't get enough compliments on her fake lips/teeth so she thinks her friend is rude 😂😂 but it is perfectly ok for her to say she's not as pretty 😂 it's like reading a teenage problem page

The sequel, What Katy Saw, is crap. Spoiler alert: it was fuck all because some bint with a trout pout stole her specs.

Fedupofcommodes · 04/03/2024 23:21

In all seriousness I don't know what alll the upset is over. Why are you annoyed because she put on some chapstick and said she needs to book dental appointment? What is so offensive about that, then you send her a long winded message about her perceived indiscretions. She is going to think you're going potty.
