Husband hates taking his shoes off inside

… that’s it, really.

We live in a city centre, and when we walk outside, we frequently see dog poo on the pavements, and occasionally vermin.

However, I apparently am a massive nag because I want him to take his outdoor shoes* off when inside our flat or other people’s homes.

*I even bought him really nice slippers, as I know he doesn’t like the feeling of walking barefoot through the flat. He puts them on most of the time but still complains that I am being difficult.

It may not surprise you to learn I am the person who does almost all of the cleaning.

Can anyone else relate to this situation or AIBU?

It's not up to you to tell him to take his shoes off at OTHER people's houses. That's up to the hosts.

At yours where you do the cleaning, I think it's justified.

I don’t tell him at other people’s houses, I just notice their discomfort when he strides inside in his shoes while there are a bunch of shoes left on the mat inside the door.

If there are other shoes by the front door, or if the host greets you without shoes or wearing slippers, that shows, to me, that the host prefers shoes off in their home, even if they are too gracious to say as much.

It doesn't though. I don't walk about all day at home in my shoes. I take them off for comfort. That doesn't mean I expect visitors to remove their shoes. I might leave my shoes on if I'm going back out though.

JFDIYOLO · 02/03/2024 14:18

A pair of indoor shoes is the answer.

My opinions on this matter are mainly fuelled by the hideous memories of DH walking dog shit into our living room/bedroom carpets before I smelt it/saw it

Just disgusting and has put me off shoes indoors since then!

Yep! We had a sofa delivery and the guy walked in fresh fox poo onto my lovely stone fluffy carpet. Smelt like someone had died.

It's utterly grim.
Get a set or Indoor shoes if needed, but wearing outdoor shoes, indoors, to keep is just minging.

But im pretty house proud and like a clean, hygienic home.
(Yes I know carpets are unhygienic but I get them shampooed every couple of months)

Mud and rain does not come off on the mat. Although we take our shoes off, the area by the door gets wet and mucky with leaf debris on rainy days.

I don't understand why you wouldn't just have clean house shoes.

Why would you choose to introduce dirt and mess onto floors and rugs if it can be entirely avoided ?

Get a better mat.

SuperMaria · 02/03/2024 14:31

@Deadringer a mat isn't designed to do anything more than remove the biggest clumps of mud and make sure your shoes aren't dripping wet. I still wouldn't walk around with that on inside.

Deadringer · 02/03/2024 14:22

Get a better mat.

If you do not understand that a ’better mat’ won’t help, I despair. 😂 If you don’t care about the dirt in your house, fine. Your choice, your house. But if you think the dirt comes off, that’s just being a bit..thick.

Natsku · 02/03/2024 14:35

Yeah doormats don't get rid of mud if you have shoes with any grip on them. Not even my shoe brushes outside my front door remove mud enough.

And of course if you live somewhere where there's snow then you'll know that walking inside with outdoor shoes on will soak your floors as the snow melts off your boots. I wipe on the doormat at school, and brush my boots with a broom if I can find it near the door but I still make the hallway wet until I get to the changing room to get my slippers on.

Wearing shoes in the house is absolutely rank.

SuperMaria · 02/03/2024 14:44

Wearing shoes indoors and being a cool girl for dirt isn't the market of fun-ness either...what does one have to do with the other?

Billions worldwide aren't fun enough for MN poster Deadringer because they don't allow shoes in their home?

Allfur · 02/03/2024 14:47

To be fair, the germphobes can get pretty mean in their language

SomeCatFromJapan · 02/03/2024 14:48

The city I live in is...not clean. As an understatement. Dog wee, dog poo, pigeon shit, human piss, rubbish lying everywhere, hacked up gob, unidentified sticky spilled stuff, dirty needles, vape canisters, petrol spills, glyphosate and more. I really, really can't emphasise enough how much I don't want the detritus of that anywhere near the woollen carpet I walk on with my bare feet.

Ladyj84 · 02/03/2024 14:49

All adults and kids take there shoes off automatically as they walk in and pop there slippers on

How come you are stating that as fact rather than opinion when lots of posters think differently?

Each to their own surely?

MyNameIsBatty · 02/03/2024 14:57

But for those with dogs and cats and who cite shoes in the house as unhygienic, they are equally as dirty. It just seems an illogical argument to me.
(Obviously doesn't apply to those who ask for shoes off but don't have pets).

mynewusername2023 · 02/03/2024 14:59

Due to medical issues, I cannot walk without something fairly solid on my feet. But I have some rubber Birkenstock sandals for inside or would buy some slip on Skechers to only wear indoors.

Stopwiththedamnrain · 02/03/2024 15:02

Ddog, Dcat , DH and DC all have muddy feet this time of year and the humans take their shoes off in the hallway (also makes the school run easier if they know where in the house they have left their shoes!)
Sorely tempted to buy them each a set of these - maybe your DH could use a pair as well and help out with cleaning the floors?! 😁

Why the need to insult others who live differently?

Why the need to insult others who live differently?

Because it's a competitive hygiene thread. Indignance mode is engaged.

Allfur · 02/03/2024 15:27

It's a shame their 'high' clean standards don't match their manners.

ancienticecream · 02/03/2024 15:29

I hate taking my shoes off (and I'm not a slipper fan, either!) but my DH doesn't like it if I leave them on. I bought house shoes instead, so I have the feeling of a shoe but it's clean. Kinda annoying when I want to put something in the wheelie bin as it's outside, but I just don't let him see me do it :)
