Is Keir Starmer right?

AdamRyan · 28/02/2024 13:31

Today he called the Conservatives "the political wing of the flat earth society" following Liz Truss' comments about the deep state in the US.

I am a big starmer fan, so want to sanity check my opinion, which is that the Conservatives seem to have bought into a lot of conspiracy theories recently, such as "no go" areas in Birmingham, London being "controlled by Islamists", the civil service being run by transactivists as well as Truss' comments.

Or do you think this is a smear and the Conservatives are being reasonable?

If I had a third option I'd also include a "meh - not interested" option for people

Video for people who want to listen to what Starmer said.

YABU - the Conservatives are not getting sucked into conspiracies, this is a smear

YANBU - the Conservatives need a large consignment of tin foil ASAP

It is widely recognised by politicians across all the political parties that the Tories are lurching to the right & it is anticipated they may well do so even more when they lose the next election.

It's all they've got at the moment.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 28/02/2024 20:28

What is it about "diversity" that makes you particularly worry for your grandchildren?

Where does the poster say that?

theilltemperedclavecinist · 28/02/2024 20:31

Some of the stuff that sounds like far fetched conspiracy theories is actually true.
Trans activists have spent more than 20 years inveigling themselves into positions of power and influence in local and wider Goverment, it’s no coincidence that it happened simultaneously Worldwide.

Go on then @Vaz66 why did it happen simultaneously worldwide? Who was behind the conspiracy?

Where are you quoting this figure for?

Oh do you think I misunderstood and it was just a non-sequituur tagged on to the end of a post about diversity?

I dont understand the point of these AIBU's when the op clearly doesnt think she is BU and is borderline rude to anyone who disagrees.

Echobelly · 28/02/2024 20:51

There is definitely an increasingly loopy wing of the Tories - I'm not sure if people like Truss and the snigger 'Popular Conservatives' really believe their bullshit or if they're just being grifters because they know there's money to be made by being a talking head on nonsense like Fox News.

I do worry that when Labour wins the next election (as I suspect they will), these lunatics will take charge of the Tories and they could win the election after that because Labour will never manage to repair even a tenth of the damage the Tories have done. There's definitely some tories, very intent on framing things like human rights, being LGBTQ+, diversity and inclusion and yes, even abortion, as beyond the pale and 'woke extremism' and I think it's very worrying. I have little doubt that unless the extremism is broken up, the next Tory government will come after maternity rights, abortion rights, gay marriage and fairly basic work rights, moving towards a more American system where the employer has you totally under their thumb.

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/02/2024 20:52

I don't understand why posters who want to discuss Labour come on to threads about the Tory party.

I don't see where you've been rude either. Of course if @Woollyewe thinks your posting style has breached the talk guidelines she is free to report it.

It's definitely worth being vigilant against, but I would say that precisely because these views are fringe now, it would be highly unlikely that the public could get behind anything like this in the next decade. If the tory party did go down this route, they'd be even less popular than they are now.

FluffyToesMeow · 28/02/2024 21:03

I’d worry too if I thought they’d have enough MPs left to regenerate and make themselves electable again. They’re being squeezed from every direction now - Reform on the right, Labour in the red wall and metropolitan areas and the LibDems in the south west and Home Counties. Hopefully they’re fucked for a very long time, Reform has stolen their right wing clothes.

Echobelly · 28/02/2024 21:30

This is why I do say to people who are going 'Ugh, Labour are too X' or 'Labour are not Y enough' that it's still important to vote for them (or Lib dems if a better option where you are) to get the Tories out. I am genuinely concerned what another Tory administration will do and while Labour may not be very impressive, they're not going to attack human rights, LGBTQ+ rights, working rights and so on, and they're not going to waste time and energy (I hope) on meaningless, distracting 'culture wars' like the Tories do to deflect from their failures.

no go" areas in Birmingham - i stongly agree these exist
London being "controlled by Islamists" - strongky agree some areas of london are also no go areas.
the civil service being run by transactivists - the civil service is very pro trans. As the mother of a daughter, i find the trans ideology extremely concerning.

I the Conservatives are being reasonable in answer to your question. But i think that they are actually being reasonable and should return the whip to Lee.

Until Starmer can tell me women dont have a penis and Sanwar can confirm the Scottish labour party will stop trying to takeaway womens rights, i cant even begin to think of these people as anything other than sickos.

Where are these London no go areas of which you speak? I live in East London and work in Whitechapel and I haven't got a clue what you're talking about.

beguilingeyes · 28/02/2024 21:40

If even Nick Ferrari thinks that Lee Anderson's statement is 'risible', things must be bad.

I think a lot of these threads on here and on other SM sites just highlight the fact that we live in a democracy and the political parties represent the feelings of the people. As you say, both sides are hedging their bets in order to gauge the opinion of the public. On the surface, this would appear to be quite in line with democracy which is really the cornerstone of British society.
The stance of both parties is only a reflection of the increasing divide within society, in my view.
My biggest problem with Starmer is that he never seems to say much, he doesn’t seem to comment on the actual issue just have a swipe at the Tories, which doesn’t give me much to get behind.
Also, Labour doesn’t know what a woman is, if they can be so confused in that most simple of areas it doesn’t give me any faith they can deal with real complex issues.
