Is Keir Starmer right?

Today he called the Conservatives "the political wing of the flat earth society" following Liz Truss' comments about the deep state in the US.

I am a big starmer fan, so want to sanity check my opinion, which is that the Conservatives seem to have bought into a lot of conspiracy theories recently, such as "no go" areas in Birmingham, London being "controlled by Islamists", the civil service being run by transactivists as well as Truss' comments.

Or do you think this is a smear and the Conservatives are being reasonable?

If I had a third option I'd also include a "meh - not interested" option for people

Video for people who want to listen to what Starmer said.

YABU - the Conservatives are not getting sucked into conspiracies, this is a smear

YANBU - the Conservatives need a large consignment of tin foil ASAP

This doesn’t look like privatisation to me.

Labour has a plan to drive down waiting times and get patients diagnosed earlier – with an extra 2 million operations, scans, and appointments in the first year. We will pay NHS staff properly for overtime to work evening and weekend shifts to bust the backlog – paid for by abolishing non-dom tax loophole for the very wealthy.

They don't have "a policy on gender" just like they don't have "a policy on the economy" or "a policy on war". What they have are fewer MPs and voters who have bought into gender ideology, so are less torn on the subject.

Well you see, the Labour Party do have a policy on gender. And the economy.
I don't agree the Conservatives have fewer members who have "bought into gender ideology". Penny Mordaunt is full on TWAW and she is favourite to be next leader.

Anyway this has been done to death.

The rhetoric from both parties looks pretty similar and Labour have committed to following Tory fiscal rules. There's a fag paper of difference between them on immigration, the NHS and welfare. It's true the Tories have a lot of market fundamentalists, supported by rightwing populists, but they've always been there.

What's different about Labour is they're no longer positing an alternative philosophy, just simply posing as an alternative.

Is Liz Kendall any less vacuous than Truss? Wes Streeting any less sinister than Badenoch? Starmer any less visionary than Sunak?

Starmer is 100% more visionary that Sunak. He has policy, Sunak has nothing apart from far right posturing about hate marches, immigrants and "a man is a man and a woman is a woman".

Fine words that mean nothing.

Mordaunt is second favourite after Badenoch. And gender ideology is surely stronger within Labour than the Conservative party, I would have thought that was a fairly uncontroversial statement.

The Now Show on R4 (Friday 6:30pm?) said basically the SNP was trying to trap Labour, is how they described the LHoyle amendment fiasco, but the only thing trapped was Hoyle.

BIossomtoes · 05/03/2024 20:46

I’m reliably informed by my bloke who’s a Tory party member that if Mordaunt survives the next election she’s their next leader. The male, pale and stale all fancy the pants off her, she reminds them of Thatcher.

DuncinToffee · 05/03/2024 20:48

Badenoch endorses Trump, not sure how that chimes with knowing what a woman is

We never discuss politics. Ever. That’s what you lot are for. 😉

@AdamRyan On the plus side, if you're right about PM being the next Tory leader and KS being a defender of women's rights, I can look forward to being called an evil lefty instead of an evil fascist in the future when saying anything GC online.

AdamRyan · 06/03/2024 08:01

Eh? Who's calling anyone evil? Confused

This focus on presenting a certain persona and using it to justify baseless comments tells us something important – that identity is a key ingredient in conspiracist rhetoric.
It enables a politician to construct a conflict between an in-group and an out-group – a struggle between “us” and “them” – and asks the audience to pick a side. Rather than focusing on policies or ways of improving life for the British population, this rhetoric wants the audience to identify with the speaker’s character and join them in opposing a threatening enemy.

Interesting article.

Quick, blame the deep state! The tactics at play when Tories spout conspiracy theories

When Liz Truss blames shadowy elitists for her failings as prime minister, she is leaning into a tried-and-tested formula.

I've been called right wing ,fascist, bigot, nazi etc many times (not on this thread). Some left wing themed insults might be a nice change.

Just report people making personal attacks.
I've had all manner of "lefty" type insults thrown my way for saying I'm voting Labour - and I'm only barely centre left. It's part of the issue of polarisation and anonymity unforts
