DB, his partner “Jane” & her 2 kids have been staying with me - in my house - after the house they were buying fell through. They had been looking at other properties to buy but have since decided to end their relationship so that’s no longer happening.

Yesterday while my DB and I were out and unbeknownst to me, Jane had an estate agent over to value my house & as he was leaving he told her he’d send her an email with the valuation & they were talking about viewings etc.

Today Jane asked me to give her a letter stating that my brother is living here but wouldn’t tell me why she wanted it & was really unhappy when I said I’d give her a letter saying they were both temporarily staying with me as that’s the actual truth.

What on earth could she be up to? I’m honestly baffled!

Should I tell her that I know about the valuation? Should I tell my DB about all of this?

On one hand I don’t want to get involved in their troubles or make things worse (things are bad enough between them already) but on the other hand I feel I’m being drawn into it as it’s my bloody house she had valued!

I have the apple app. If you click the arrow next to the OP, you get a menu that starts with 'filter', which lets you filter it so you just see all the OP's posts.

DrFoxtrot · 28/02/2024 10:52

@FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant do you not have this on the app? You can click it and choose to see OP's posts only. You might have to click on my photo to see the whole thing.

This isn't possible on the android app. It's not a feature of the webpage or the apple app. For us android users we just have to scroll and scroll..

Just use your phone browser and then you can use 'Find in page' and also see all the OP's posts. I don't think the app does anything the webpage doesn't do, in fact quite the opposite!

Slanabhaile · 28/02/2024 11:02

I always think if you can't "See All" or "See next" but the thread is 100s of posts long, you can always look at the last few posts to get an idea what's the latest update.

I doubt it, the EA confirmed the email address had OPs name in it which indicates that a fake one was set up to make it look as though she were emailing.

So the OP knows that 'Jane' set up a fake email address. This needs looking at by the police as it is clearly an attempt at fraud of some sort. Jane needs interviewing under caution.

You can do this just on a safari browser as well

No, MN have confirmed it's not an available feature on the android app yet. A few people have complained about it. Apple only unfortunately!

People shouldn't have to use the browser on their phone if there is a dedicated phone app available. I'm not complaining, I've read the full thread as it is, I just get bored of seeing people matter of factly state that people can click "see all" when that's not the case for half of users.

Except the OP has no way of proving Jane did it, the EA are now declining to share the address because OP told them it's not hers and the police are highly unlikely to dedicate resources to confirming the IP used when the email address was created.

It's shit for the OP but the police have already advised why they won't take it further with Jane

SageRosemary · 28/02/2024 11:44

@Mumsnet Is it possible for you to insert a notice immediately after the OP's opening post to advise that the situation has moved on rapidly and intending posters should read at least all the OPs posts before offering "helpful" suggestions (such as "contact the estate agent", "contact the police" etc)? Or, perhaps you can edit the opening post itself with such a note from Mumsnet. Many of us are interested in this thread but it is frustrating for the thread to be filling up with useful suggestions and other posters telling them to RTFT and that the suggestion was made at the beginning of the thread and now it has disintegrated into who can read all the OP's posts easily on our desktops or Apple devices and who cannot.

For those who cannot choose to read all the OP's posts only by selection, you can at least note that they are in a different colour and you can scroll through pages looking for that colour.

See, this is exactly why a lot of people don’t bother trying to help on Mumsnet anymore 🙄

I know, and like I said someone shouldn't have to use a browser when there's an app available just so stop snide comments from people saying "just press see all" because someone hasn't read 700+ posts

Gloriosaford · 28/02/2024 12:23

Sounds like Jane thought she was on to a good thing with your brother, until she overreached and fell flat on her face 😬

perfectly chilled thanks and I don't like martinis. we're not the weird ones here.

just sharing the info in case it’s helpful. It’s up to you isn’t it

JudgeJ · 28/02/2024 13:17

Many many years ago, as my late Father used to say 'when Adam wur a lad' one used to see notices in the newspapers saying, in legalese, that person ABC had no responsibility for any debts etc incurred by XYZ, is there an equivalent modern way of doing this?

ha, never heard of this! Maybe OP can take out a local billboard about Jane, or something in Estate Agents weekly 😁

DrFoxtrot · 28/02/2024 13:58

@FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant how annoying! You'd think the apps would all have same features!

DrFoxtrot · 28/02/2024 14:00

OP I'm really glad you got onto this before Jane was able to take anything further. She sounds a right piece of work.

@SageRosemary all good points. Just to say I cannot see what the problem is for android users, I am one, and the 'see all' highlighted next to Op's name is very obvious to me using the web browser. I choose not to have the app

Surely it's obvious the problem is for android users using the app?

Clumsyandheavy · 28/02/2024 20:06

If you feel you’ve got the energy you could do a subject access request for all details about you and your house/address from the estate agent.
it would give you ‘your’ email address and phone number that was used for the booking and any emails sent/received about it.

totally get it if it’s too much hassle and sorted now.
best wishes for the future
