What is she up to?

DB, his partner “Jane” & her 2 kids have been staying with me - in my house - after the house they were buying fell through. They had been looking at other properties to buy but have since decided to end their relationship so that’s no longer happening.

Yesterday while my DB and I were out and unbeknownst to me, Jane had an estate agent over to value my house & as he was leaving he told her he’d send her an email with the valuation & they were talking about viewings etc.

Today Jane asked me to give her a letter stating that my brother is living here but wouldn’t tell me why she wanted it & was really unhappy when I said I’d give her a letter saying they were both temporarily staying with me as that’s the actual truth.

What on earth could she be up to? I’m honestly baffled!

Should I tell her that I know about the valuation? Should I tell my DB about all of this?

On one hand I don’t want to get involved in their troubles or make things worse (things are bad enough between them already) but on the other hand I feel I’m being drawn into it as it’s my bloody house she had valued!

But this:

The agent said “Right I have everything I need for the valuation so I’ll email sometime this afternoon when I’m back in the office” so it was my assumption that he was saying he’d email her as it was her he was talking to and I had no idea what was going on

does not tally with this:

Anyway long story short, they didn’t send the valuation, the email they sent said the valuation was ready but before they could go any further, they need to register my property and carry out some checks and asking me to fill out some forms and provide all the information in the checklist (photo ID, proof of address etc). There was no reply to the email.

I am surprised tthe EA was so blasé; strikes me as more covering their arse.

ButterBastardBeans · 27/02/2024 21:37

Surely finding out what email address the EA had to send the valuation to would shed some light?

It happens. I started a thread last year and one of the replies to it got deleted. 🤷🏻‍♀️ No idea why! It was directed at me and I didn't find it offensive nor did I report it, so I've no idea who did or why it was taken down.

That’s interesting. So they’re monitoring if other ppl find it offensive irrespective of the intended recipient. I’ve often hit the report button by mistake, despite having ridiculously small hands but fortunately there are further options so you can ammend before it gets whisked off to HQ.

I was more surprised that someone reported the reference to Cabot Cove though. I know there’s not a massive audience for the show now but I wonder what sparked the outrage…

It may sound very conspiracy theory, but maybe they knew each other.

When I was buying my house the seller was on friendly terms with the estate agent and I believe they were old friends. Doesn’t happen often but it does happen.

Some of the suggestions on here have been really good though - about approaching the estate agents with proof of police contact, etc. The fact it’s all in OP’s name, why can’t they provide the phone number and email address? Can’t the police approach them as it’s a lead?!

EATmum · 27/02/2024 22:00

Data subject access request to the estate agent?

I’m wondering if you can find the doorbell footage of him arriving, she says she didn’t know anything about it but let him in because she assumed you’d organised it, I think her response when he comes to the door will make it clear whether or not she was already expecting him.

This is the other post I was thinking of - really good idea!

Sceptical123 · 27/02/2024 22:03

I guess with the workload of the police they are only interested if it is an airtight case, like I think they mentioned. Nothings been stolen as yet but it’s such a shame they won’t follow up the suspicion that someone was PLANNING a potential crime - or is a threat and could try again to target someone else!

Maybe they thought whatever was said was a slight towards the OP 🤷🏻

Abeona · 27/02/2024 16:33

What's the point? The EA knows that the OP (the householder) didn't ask for a valuation, they know the email address and phone number they've been given isn't hers, they know she's not selling, OP has set up an alert with the Land Registry, the police have said no crime has occurred and Jane's game, whatever it was, has been rumbled and she's gone.

There isn’t a point….but it does look as though the OP wants some sort of answer.

Slanabhaile · 27/02/2024 19:30

Why have it removed?

MSW is one of my comfort TV shows, so I knew immediately. Funny what you think everyone knows, just because you do.
Maybe@DontVisitCabotCove needs to call in Jessica to solve the mystery? But then she'd probably end up being arrested for murder, as all Jessica's friends do 😆😆

Careful now! (Another TV reference) Although it's difficult to remember precisely what I wrote because my post was removed and I can't check, your comment was very much along the line that I took.

Like a police state? 'We don't know what you were planning and we can't see any advantage to you in what you were doing, but people are suspicious so you're nicked' sort of thing? Lovely.

Lol no I think that’s the movie Minority Report, which is shit incidentally.

No @Abeona I wasn’t referring to a blanket method of thought policing, bless you. I was referring to this specific situation. I’m sorry it wasn’t clearer for you to work out.

SheepAndSword · 28/02/2024 04:00

@Sceptical123 👍 I was thinking about watching that, won't bother then. I watch far too much as it is.

Don’t take my word for it, I’m not a massive Tom Cruise fan

Do tell the estate agent urgently

LittleMissSleepyUK · 28/02/2024 07:32

I think I’d want confirmation from the agent that they will not be giving her any more information too. A request for the details they’ve got on you might be an idea too.

So sorry you’re having to deal with all this on top of your illness. Some people are just heartless

Well yes-because why would there be any thought of it being Jane's email address?

Even if she was letting them in to view they wouldn't have her address would they?

Especially as "plausible deniability" she thought Op had booked it & forgotten?

So Op should have been able to say "what email address did I give you"?

I doubt it, the EA confirmed the email address had OPs name in it which indicates that a fake one was set up to make it look as though she were emailing.

Goodness, if only someone suggested that 30 pages ago. Whatever would we do without you?

I saw this yesterday morning but had a very busy day and no time to respond, but it worried me so much. I hope Land Registry have also been alerted. Took me a while to find it again as not a big user of Mumsnet and didn't read Al the messages- very glad if others have given the same advice

31 pages in, you'd think so wouldn't you.

Very few people have the time or patience to read such long threads in detail, but my approach is to assume after so many pages the obvious things have been covered, if not everything you could think of. It does help to click on the OP first post and in the bottom right hand corner then click on 'see all' so you can at least read the OP's updates to get up to speed.

Exactly. And this OP has been particularly great with her clarity and concision, so people can get the whole story swiftly from using the 'see all' of her posts.

This isn't possible on the android app. It's not a feature of the webpage or the apple app. For us android users we just have to scroll and scroll..
