Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

Lunch in the sunshine-perfect!! Try the early flight, if you don't like it then be nice about it but suggest that next time a later flight would be better.

Why in god's name do you need to be at the airport 3 hours before a shorthaul flight? Especially when you are staying at the airport

When I went the other week, we arrived two and a half hours early and had no extra time to sit around, as the luggage drop off and checking really did take all that time (including long walks between areas).

Lifebeganat50 · 25/02/2024 13:05

YABU.

6am flights are the dog’s bollocks for short haul-I actively seek them out…you’re at your destination and on a sunbed by lunchtime, rather than wasting the first day travelling.

DevaleraSpawnOfSatan · 25/02/2024 13:06

@getionnn

I have been thinking about this in the shower.

There are people on here who are struggling to heat their homes and put food on the table, so quite frankly your post is tone deaf at the moment.

Ginmonkeyagain · 25/02/2024 13:09

@winterplumage ahh I never drop off luggage for a short haul flight. Also I am happy to keep moving. I hate hanging around in airports.

StepIntoMyOffice · 25/02/2024 13:12

We have a 6.15am flight with Ryanair in April. We're aiming to be at the airport at 4am (after dropping the car off at the long stay carpark). We live 30 mins from the airport and have a 2 year old and 3 year old! We'll have to be up at 2.30am, won't get to our destination until 12noon and it's a 3pm check-in. That's something I can understand dreading, not your situation.

Quizine · 25/02/2024 13:14

Personally I avoid stupid o'clock (a.m.) times myself, but would do it if it's the only time available to get to a particular place.

I find myself very groggy and a bit ill, don't know why but that's me! Also, if in Europe, the check in times for hotels can be late so you arrive at hotel at say 10 am and cannot check in until 2 or 3. WTF? That kills any advantage of an early flight for me, but I'll do it if I have to.

Anything between 11am and 3pm are my dream times, and I've often paid for a more expensive flight to get those timings.

Everyone is different. But the OP is a bit OTT. It's a one off and a delightful reason for an early start also. There are many other reasons to be awake at that hour and they are usually not pleasant.

What a ridiculous post. I cannot bear hearing that all people are allowed to complain about is not having enough money to eat. People have lots of different worries and just because this particular worry is not as grand as someone else's worry is not for you to belittle it

AirborneElephant · 25/02/2024 13:17

I never quite understand why people get to airports so early unless you actively want to spend time in the lounge/pub/having a meal as part of the holiday. We have a 6.30 flight from Heathrow next week. Intend to get up at 4.30, leave the house at 5, drop car off at 5.30, through security by 5.45. That’s loads of time, even at Heathrow conformance is only 30 mins and it’s generally shorter at smaller airports. I never fly short haul with hold luggage, if we did I guess I’d add another half an hour. Like @Lifebeganat50 I actively chose an early flights as it means we’ll have time at the destination that afternoon, I hate arriving late evening and feeling we’ve wasted the whole day.

NameChangeAgain0224 · 25/02/2024 13:18

YANBU!

My husband books early flights because they’re cheaper and I hate it. I don’t want to be getting up at 1.30am (after only about two hours sleep) and then driving three hours to an airport etc and then having to be awake and shattered during all airport stuff, the flights and the transfers at the other end.

Having such an early flight and being so tired on the first day just makes everything so miserable.

DH thinks that because he can “just get on with it” then everyone else should too.

He wakes the kids up at 1am for example and bundles them into the car, and it’s fine for them as they’ve already have 4+ hours sleep and then they fall straight back to sleep again before the car has even left the end of the street. By the time we get to the airport they’re awake and refreshed and I feel exhausted and shit. They usually get more sleep on the plane too whereas I never can.

When we arrive in the hotel of our destination I just go to bed for about 3+
hours and leave DH to deal with the children.

I have now said that the earliest flight I will get on is about 8-9am and only if we stay at the hotel airport the night before so we can get as much sleep as possible. I can cope with waking up at 5am but anything earlier than that is a hard no.

YANBU for dreading it and I’d be exactly the same. It just takes a little bit of the shine off it.

What? You have hot water and a shower? There are people who don't have access to this. How tone deaf of you 😁

OneTC · 25/02/2024 13:24

Sounds like an excuse to start drinking at 4am, which don't often come along

I mean this really, we can have a bit of a moan about trivia doesn't make the Op or anybody "tone deaf"

ThreeTreeHill · 25/02/2024 13:25

I think your being ridiculous tbh

No one likes being tired, but to dread being a bit tired for one day months in advance before a holiday is ridiculous. If you go to bed at 9pm get up at 3am that's still 6hrs sleep. You can relax by the pool when you get there

Hard to believe the OP was genuine. Yes using the cost of living argument is often overused. But if so who is filled with dread at having to catch an early flight? It's ridiculous in the extreme. Seems likely to have been posted for a reaction, which is being given.

Aviee · 25/02/2024 13:25

You don't need to be there at 3

getionnn · 25/02/2024 12:34

It says on my boarding pass arrive 3 hours before for international flight 💁‍♀️

It tends to say this and is useful for those travelling on the day.
However you might actually find that check is not open 3 hrs before. The last three early flights I’ve taken (including Greece last year) check-in has opened 2 1/2 hours before, and turning up 2 hours before after spending the night in a hotel on site has worked fine.

Have a fantastic time in Rhodes. It shouldn’t be too busy at that time of year and do get to see Lindos if you can

StepUpSlowly · 25/02/2024 13:28

YABVU, an early flight is no fun I agree, BUT it gives you extra holiday time and really no need to be at the airport 3 hours before. I am on a plane or two just about every week, and for a short haul ryan air flight I aim to be at the airport 2 hours previous MAX if I have checked in luggage (but often get there 1h30 previous) and never missed a plane, most of the time the boarding never starts at the written time and 99.9% actually starts at take off time (not just with Ryan Air with most companies) so if you are nervous aim to be at the airport for 3h45 but honestly for such early flights security will be virtually empty so I would actually get there at 4h15/4h20 (if it was me).

you can do your makeup at the airport while you wait to board (if you must wear some), so no need to get up early for it honestly.

don’t let an early flight ruin a good gesture.

Long haul is 3hrs.
Short haul is 2hrs.

Get up at 3.30am and have a nap on the plane. What an amazing present.

3 hours is not a long haul flight 🤣🤣 mid haul depending on which regulator you ask but long haul is generally considered more than 6 hours flight time.

Anyway, OP I'm with you, I hate early ANYTHING but I've done this previously and staying in the airport hotel makes so much difference mentally imo. You'll be glad of it when you get to have lunch in the sunshine 🍹

Branleuse · 25/02/2024 13:37

I used to avoid these flights because I'm terrible at being tired, but Ive done it a couple of times now and it was not as bad as I thought. The airport hotel makes it easier. See if you can do a twilight drop of any baggage.
Don't plan much for the first day, and also try and rest on the plane even if it's not a proper sleep.
It's actually quite nice to get somewhere earlier and have that extra day of the holiday, even if you are sleepy.

MCOut · 25/02/2024 13:37

YABU and a tad dramatic. You don’t need to wake up at 2.30am for a 6am flight when you’re staying 2 mins away from the airport.

Wake up at 3.30am, have your shower and go straight to the airport. I love early flights because getting through security is quick, you can have a good breakfast in the airport and then you can catch up on some sleep on the plane.

The poster clearly meant get to the airport 3 hours in advance for a long haul flight.

Not sure why you find that so funny?

FizzyStream · 25/02/2024 13:41

I love an early morning flight. Leaving for the airport when it's still dark etc it's exciting, unusual and all part of the holiday. Plus you get more time there on your first day. We're going to Spain in August and flight leaves at 6am. Can't wait!
