Pretty much that.
I'm going to Gran Canaria for a week in 7 weeks time and I should be excited as it was a valentines present from OH
But he's booked a 6am flight
We are staying at an airport hotel the night before which is literally 2 mins walk to terminal (and small airport ) but I'm dreading it.
I hate being tired and will need to be up at 2.30am really.
We are going to Rhodes in September and it's a lovely 3pm flight.
I'm just filled with dread and worrying about being tired the whole day.
Aibu to feel this way ?

Her boarding pass doesn't say that, though.

It says to be at the airport three hours in advance, not that check-in is available that early.

Semantics. Many Ryan air flights do open 3 hours before hand.

thecatsthecats · 25/02/2024 12:54

For that spec I would:

  • check the number of flights that day/time
  • probably set my alarm for 4am
  • have an outfit ready, on, and be heading out to be at the airport 4.15am
  • probably have luggage dropped by 4.35am
  • make-up and breakfast post security
  • like bugger do Ryanair need you there 30m before the departure time - we fly with them regularly and are usually sitting in the bar opposite the queue of people standing there for that whole 30m.
  • that pre-flight wine really helps you get back to sleep in my experience

Pro tip - there is often a bar near the departure gate which is half empty and quick service. The Gates 1-20 All Bar One with Boots opposite is a particular favourite at Birmingham airport.

(Bonus option of ask your partner to check if there are delays at waking up and leave a little more sleep if Ryanair are late.)

Long haul is 3hrs.
Short haul is 2hrs.

Get up at 3.30am and have a nap on the plane. What an amazing present.

YABU.

got a 6am Ryanair flight recently, didn’t need to be at the terminal until 4.15am.

From the same airport as the op? Or do you have no idea what airport she’s flying from?

Funkyslippers · 25/02/2024 12:55

I'm actually with you there, OP. I avoid early flights as I literally cannot sleep knowing I have to be up in the middle of the night and don't cope well with tiredness but also can't sleep on the plane! I have insomnia at the best of times so this would just exasperate it. YANBU. All these people saying get up at 3.30, you usually have to be there at least 2 hours before the flight and it's not like you can just roll out of bed & walk in to the airport. You'd no doubt still have to pack up from the night before, get dressed, freshen up etc. I'd need about an hour for this

Rosiiee · 25/02/2024 12:56

@Janetime why are you so obsessed on the 3 hour thing.... it's weird. Just get there 2 hours before it's fine Jesus.

OP better yet, why don't you get there 3 hours before and let us know if the desks are open.

TomaytoTomaato · 25/02/2024 12:57

I always pick early morning flights where possible and travel the day before and stay overnight in an airport hotel.
The thought of traveling to the airport on the day fills me with dread. You can never predict accidents/traffic on the motorway that could mean you miss your flight (especially if travelling on the M25).
I'd much rather be a little tired and snooze on the flight, than risk getting stuck in traffic and missing the flight!

Millie890 · 25/02/2024 12:57

getionnn · 25/02/2024 12:29

Get up at 2.30 to put a little make up on and be at airport for 3
It's with Ryanair so need to check in suitcase then go through security then grab breakfast
Normally board 30 mins before which is 5.30 am

Just skip the make up for an extra half an hour' s sleep and get up at 3, even 3.30 would be fine. Nobody cares what you look like on a Ryanair flight.

Janetime · 25/02/2024 12:54

Semantics. Many Ryan air flights do open 3 hours before hand.

It's not semantics - you're just making things up.

OP said, in her own words, "It says on my boarding pass arrive 3 hours before for international flight".

Not "It says on my boarding pass that check in opens three hours early" or "it says that we need to check in three hours early".

hby9628 · 25/02/2024 12:58

We always go for early flights. Get to the hotel, chill out and have a nap if required. It's the best way!

Groovee · 25/02/2024 12:59

I used to dread it. But the last few years we've had a 6.30am flight. I normally have a wee snooze on the plane then we rest when we get the room. Then get back to normal the first night.

FictionalCharacter · 25/02/2024 12:59

Yabu. It's just one night of disturbed sleep and you'll be at your hotel nice and early. There's nothing to dread.
I find people who think like this very spoilt and ungrateful. I'd love it if my husband organised something like this as a gift. I've never in my life been treated to a foreign holiday by a partner who made all the arrangements. I would have loved it.

What a charmed life you live that this is what you worry about

What do you get to dictate what other people worry about? This could be one of many things OP is worried about for all you know

Soupit · 25/02/2024 13:00

I always book early flights. We live miles from the airport. We travelled in January and stayed in an airport hotel.
Did twilight bag drop, paid £5 for fast track , checked in online. Flight at 7am up at 4.50, left hotel at 05.10, walked to airport and joined the queue at 5.15am.
Got taxi at Lanzarote airport arrived at hotel 2pm and had a nap before dinner.

artpkvea · 25/02/2024 13:00

This can't be real.

Aposterhasnoname · 25/02/2024 13:01

Yabvvvu. 6am is the best time to fly, you’ll be there before lunch. Gran a bite to eat and a glass of wine that find a sun lounger in the shade and have nap, sounds like the perfect day to me.

BristolBorn · 25/02/2024 13:01

Always early morning.

The last time we had an afternoon flight we had delays. It meant we didn’t get to our hotel until 11pm, the kitchen was closed and we hadn’t eaten since lunchtime!
It also meant that our holiday was shorter and we paid extra to just go to bed.

Abracadabra12345 · 25/02/2024 13:01

Nacknick · 25/02/2024 12:35

Do you actually need to put on makeup and have breakfast before the flight? I would stay in bed longer and just have a tea or coffee. You can always take or buy something to eat on the plane if you’re worried about having to wake up so early?

This is what we'll do for our 6 am flight in the summer and also staying in the airport hotel. No way would I be getting up at 2.30 am

malmi · 25/02/2024 13:01

No way do you need to be there that early. Get there about 30 mins before check in closes so you can drop your bag and go straight through security. Aiming to be 3 hours early makes sense if you're coming from afar but you're already at the airport so there's really no point.

WhatWhereWho · 25/02/2024 13:02

So do not go. FFS if this is the kind of thing that you dread how do you cope with day to day life.

Ginmonkeyagain · 25/02/2024 13:03

Why in god's name do you need to be at the airport 3 hours before a shorthaul flight? Especially when you are staying at the airport

Shoxfordian · 25/02/2024 13:03

You're overreacting, have a quadruple espresso and get on the plane

SgtJuneAckland · 25/02/2024 13:03

I prefer an early morning flight on the way out and a late afternoon/early evening flight back, maximise the holiday time!

winterplumage · 25/02/2024 13:03

I am chronically sleep-deprived and can't cope on little sleep,so I was really worried going to the Canaries this half term alone with my 10 year old DC. I accidentally booked a 7 am flight, meaning a 4 am train to the airport. We set our alarms for 3 am (meaning I got 3-4 hours' sleep) and it was fine. I was so surprised!

The flight's about 4 hours, so I took ear plugs and vaguely tried to sleep. I was very envious of the man next to me who slept the entire flight (while his OH looked after their three children!).

The whole journey was so smooth, transfers from the airport all ready, arrived at the hotel in time for a quiet walk on the beach then dinner and an early night.

It was a wonderful holiday and well worth the tired day of travel.

I mean that's entirely your choice. You can turn up at the airport at 4/4:30 and still be fine.

If you opt to get out of bed hours before you need to simply to put make up on it's not really something you can moan about.

The only thing wrong with the 6am flight is your approach to it.
